PURPOSE: Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy/sympathotomy for the treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis is generally performed by either cutting or clamping the sympathetic chain. However, it remains unclear as to which of these methods is more effective and has fewer side effects. This study was conducted to compare the effects of sympathotomy by cutting or clamping at T3 on two outcomes--postoperative palmar sweating and compensatory sweating; it also evaluated postoperative patient satisfaction.
METHODS: The participants were among 289 patients who underwent bilateral sympathotomy at T3 for palm…

INTRODUCTION: Plantar hidradenitis, one of several possible causes of painful papulo-nodular lesions of the foot in children and young adults, was recently described as the presence of characteristic lesions of the eccrine sweat glands.
CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old boy consulted for a sudden-onset painful eruption on the sole of the right foot. Physical examination revealed papulo-nodular erythromato-violet infiltrated lesions located on the anterior part of the right planta. Histology examination showed dense neutrophil inflammatory infiltration predominating at the dermo-hypodermic junction a…

The aim of the present study is to apply the canine olfactory sensitivity to detect COVID-19-positive axillary sweat samples as a One Health approach in Latin America. One hundred volunteers with COVID-like symptoms were invited to participate, and both axillary sweat samples for dog detection and nasopharynx/oropharynx swabs for qPCR were collected. Two dogs, previously trained, detected 97.4% of the samples positive for COVID-19, including a false-negative qPCR-test, and the positive predictive value was 100% and the negative predictive value was 98.2%. Therefore, we can conclude that canine…

BACKGROUND: The existence of a third type of sweat gland in human axillary skin, the apoeccrine gland, with a capacity to produce much higher sweat output than the eccrine gland, was proposed from examination of microdissected glands. However, previous studies of axillary skin glands did not examine the entire individual glandular structure via serial sections and the markers used to identify the different glands gave conflicting results and, hence, the existence of the apoeccrine gland remains controversial.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate human axillary sweat glands by serial section histology a…

OBJECTIVES: A prospective analytical study was performed in a large population of drivers implicated in traffic accidents to determine the significance of drug levels observed in blood, urine, saliva and sweat and which assays are best to perform in each sample.
METHODS: Samples of blood (7.5 ml), urine (10-20 ml), saliva (salivette Sarstedt) and sweat (cosmetic pad spiked with water-isopropanol) were systematically collected in drivers implicated in non-fatal traffic accidents from March to November 1999. The samples were tested for pharmaceuticals (barbiturates, benzodiazepines, anti-depres…

Compensatory sweating remains one of the most unpredictable and debilitating complications of sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis. There appears to be a significant difference in compensatory sweating rates seen between the different techniques utilized to treat hyperhidrosis. Resectional techniques have historically resulted in excellent symptom relief with relatively low levels of severe post-op compensatory sweating. The advent of video-assisted approaches to the treatment of hyperhidrosis has led to other procedures including ablation/cautery, cutting and clipping of the nerve all of which rep…

From the aspect of physiological roles, sweating on the hairy skin is an important for thermoregulation of body, and that on glabrous skin (the palm or sole) works as an anti-skid material when gripping something or performing a delicate task using the fingertips (emotional sweating). Abnormal sweating, which can be global or localized, is classified into hyperhidrosis and hypohidrosis, and detection of abnormal sweating, such as Horner's syndrome and Harlequin syndrome, is clinically useful for regional diagnosis of neurological lesions. In addition, sudomotor function tests, where sweat secr…

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be emotionally challenging and socially and professionally disruptive, and there have been few effective treatments. Recently, botulinum toxin has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis of the axillae and palms and for gustatory sweating.
OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the current treatments and outcomes achieved with chemodenervation of the eccrine sweat glands.
RESULTS: The antihydrotic response lasted 6-17 months for gustatory sweating, 2-8 months for axillary sweating, and 13 weeks to 12 months for palmar sw…

In addition to the classical description of involvement of the cervical sympathetic in low root lesions (Claude Bernard-Horner syndrome), other sympathetic syndromes have been described accompanying the motor and sensory changes in obstetrical paralysis of the upper limb. Loss of sweat secretion can be deomonstrated by electrical skin resistance tests, and the authors describe their apparatus and method of investigating this in the newborn. Although sweat secretion is often scanty in the newborn, it can be enhanced with appropriate techniques, particularly in the areas richer in sweat glands. …

Primary hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating and often accompanied by social avoidance. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by fear and avoidance of social situations, often partly related to fears of showing signs of excessive autonomic nervous system activation, such as sweating. To clarify the relationship of hyperhidrosis and SAD, this study assessed severity of sweating, overall social anxiety and social anxiety due to sweating, and disability in 2 groups: patients seeking surgical treatment for hyperhidrosis (n = 40) and patients seeking treatment for SAD (n = …

BACKGROUND: When asked, a significant number of patients report having experienced night sweats. Those who do are more likely to report decreased physical health, mental health, and quality of life. In most cases the cause of night sweats is unknown. We therefore do not know how much to worry about patients with this symptom. The present study examined associations between night sweats and mortality.
METHODS: We used logistic regression and proportional hazards analyses to investigate potential predictors of mortality, including night sweats reported at baseline, among 2 different cohorts of …

This study assessed whether replacing sweat losses with sodium-free fluid can lower the plasma sodium concentration and thereby precipitate the development of hyponatremia. Ten male endurance athletes participated in one 1-h exercise pretrial to estimate fluid needs and two 3-h experimental trials on a cycle ergometer at 55% of maximum O2 consumption at 34 degrees C and 65% relative humidity. In the experimental trials, fluid loss was replaced by distilled water (W) or a sodium-containing (18 mmol/l) sports drink, Gatorade (G). Six subjects did not complete 3 h in trial W, and four did not com…

Chromhidrosis is a rare disorder in which there is pigmentation of sweat in a variety of colors. It can be classified into apocrine, pseudoeccrine, and true eccrine chromhidrosis. Pseudochromhidrosis is a condition in which the excreted sweat is colorless, but later acquires color due to contact with chromogenic chemicals. Systemic and topical antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment. Although it does not constitute a major health issue, it causes psychological stress and social embarrassment. A 20-year-old female presented to us with yellow-colored sweat and discoloration of clothes since 1 …
