When teaching procedures in simulation, do simulation adjuncts translate to better performance?

BACKGROUND: Learners should ideally be taught low-frequency, high-acuity procedures in a simulated clinical environment to limit patient harm. Evidence supporting a simulation scenario with educational adjuncts to teach procedures versus a traditional procedure laboratory have not been previously demonstrated. To investigate the effects of simulation adjuncts on procedural skills attainment, we compared performances of learners who trained on a modified airway task trainer within the context of a simulation scenario with educational adjuncts for balloon tamponade placement to those who trained

Teaching an old vector new tricks: the surprising versatility of AAV vaccines.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) has proven its clinical efficacy in the realm of gene therapy, resulting in seven FDA-approved gene therapies. While AAV gene transfer research has predominantly focused on its utility in monogenic disorders, AAV vectors have been used as a platform for vaccines in over 50 preclinical studies over the last 25 years. Recombinant AAV-based vaccines have demonstrated induction and durability of antigen-specific adaptive immune responses in a variety of preclinical models. This mini-review serves as a comprehensive discussion of the basics of vaccine vector design and

Teaching biology using memoirs of scientists, public health officials, doctors, and patients.

In this study, we designed a novel undergraduate biology course centered entirely around reading memoirs of scientists, doctors, patients, and public health officials. Students in the course engaged in active learning and critical thinking-based activities and assessments, including writing analytical papers, delivering scientific presentations, writing personal reflections, performing data analysis, and engaging in group work and class discussions in every class period. The main learning goals of the course were for students to visualize the processes of science and medicine, to understand th

The SimCom-Method: Impact of Simulated Communication Teaching in Pediatric Resuscitation Scenarios.

OBJECTIVE: Effective communication when breaking bad news to families is crucial, yet it is often lacking. This study evaluates the efficacy of a communication teaching session via simulation to improve the quality of breaking difficult news in a pediatric resuscitation setting. METHODS: This was a prospective randomized controlled trial at the Medical University of Vienna. Participants undergoing a pediatric high-fidelity resuscitation simulation resulting in the death of a 6-year-old patient were tasked with delivering the death notice to simulation parents. These conversations were video r…

Streamlining Patient Transitions: A Surgical Discharge Card Initiative at Almanagil Teaching Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate discharge documentation at Almanagil Teaching Hospital posed significant risks to patient safety and continuity of care, consistent with challenges seen in similar healthcare settings. The hospital aimed to address these gaps by enhancing the completeness, accuracy, and clarity of surgical discharge documentation through the development and implementation of a standardized discharge card, coupled with targeted staff training. METHODS: A prospective quality improvement project was conducted in two cycles (May-June 2025), involving audits of 44 (First Cycle) and 51 (Secon…

Effectiveness of a Teaching Program on Ebola Virus Knowledge Among Nursing Students.

Introduction Ebolaviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses in the Filoviridae family. They are transmitted to humans through direct contact … erimental one-group pre-test post-test design was utilized to assess the effectiveness of a planned teaching program on Ebola virus knowledge among nursing students. A simple random sampling technique was employed to select participants from nursing colleges in Navi Mumbai. The teaching program, which covered Ebola virus transmission, prevention, and treat …

Prevalence and risk factors of birth asphyxia at Livingstone University teaching hospital.

Birth asphyxia remains a leading cause of neonatal mortality in low-resource settings, with Zambia reporting a rate of 24 deaths per 1,000 live births. Birth asphyxia accounts for over 20% of neonatal ICU admissions. This study aimed to determine its prevalence and risk factors to inform targeted interventions. We conducted a secondary data analysis of medical records at Livingstone University Teaching Hospital, Zambia, including 497 maternal-neonatal records of deliveries between 15 July 2024 and 31 March 2025. Data were abstracted from the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department and Neonatal I…

Visualizing Anatomy: Comparing the Pedagogical Impact of Chalkboard Teaching and 3D Models.

Effective anatomy education is critical for preparing medical students for clinical tasks such as surgical planning and radiological interpretation. Traditional chalkboard teaching and modern 3D printed models offer distinct approaches, yet their comparative pedagogical impact remains underexplored. This study evaluates chalkboard, 3D printed model, and hybrid teaching methods to optimize anatomy learning for clinical applications like coronary artery mapping and neurosurgery planning. A quasi-experimental study involved 120 undergraduate medical students randomly assigned to three groups (n =…

Patients perceived challenges in seeking dental care in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Access to dental care services remains a global challenge, with millions encountering barriers that hinder their utilization, despite the recognized importance of oral health to overall well-being. The intricate relationship between oral health and general well-being highlights the severe impact of oral disorders on global economies and public health systems when access barriers exist. This study aimed to assess the perceived challenges in seeking dental care among patients at the Oral Health Directorate of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. METHODS: This study employed a mixed metho…

Medical Students' Perception Toward Various Human Anatomy Teaching Methods in Khartoum, Sudan.

Background Anatomy teaching uses both traditional and modern methods. Although cadaveric dissection remains the gold standard, students face challenges in visualizing embryological processes and applying histological knowledge clinically. Prior studies have mainly focused on Western medical schools, overlooking resource-limited settings such as Sudan. This study aimed to explore students' perceptions of anatomy teaching methods in such a setting. Methodology A cross-sectional survey was conducted among second to fifth-year medical students who had completed at least half of their anatomy sylla…

Bipolar radiofrequency track cautery during abdominal biopsies: teaching points and lessons learned.

Abdominal percutaneous needle biopsies are commonly performed minimally invasive procedures to obtain tissue samples for histopathological d … sk of post-biopsy bleeding or tumor seeding. This paper offers an illustrative case-based review of teaching points and lessons learned in our experience using a commercially available bipolar radiofrequency track cautery device during percutaneous image-guided abdominal biopsies.

Integrating virtual reality to enhance remote teaching of anatomy during unprecedented times.

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a global paradigm shift in the teaching of human anatomy. Most institutions successfully transitioned from traditional in-person teaching methods, to various distance-learning strategies. Since virtual reality (VR) offers immersive three-dimensional (3D) experiences, this study investigated students' experiences regarding the capacity of VR to support distance-learning of anatomy. Using the VR application, 3D Organon Virtual Reality Anatomy, anatomy instructors pre-recorded learning content as 360-degree videos with live voice-over and integrated it into the …

Teaching Abolition Medicine: Best Practices for Centering Criminalized Communities in Medical Education.

Mass incarceration is a significant structural determinant of health, affecting incarcerated individuals, their families, and communities, with profound racial disparities. Health care professionals have an opportunity to reduce these inequities through abolition medicine. Abolition in health care means rewriting how doctors relate to patients labeled as criminal and is not a new checklist that can be imposed on the existing curriculum. Beyond changing individual clinical practice, abolition medicine also provides a critical framework for dismantling unjust policies. However, published medical
