Rotator cuff tears are difficult to manage because of the structural and mechanical inhomogeneity of the supraspinatus tendon. Previously, we showed that with the arm at the side, the supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendons mechanically interact such that conditions that increase supraspinatus tendon strain, such as load or full-thickness tears, also increase infraspinatus tendon strain. This suggests that the infraspinatus tendon may shield the supraspinatus tendon from further injury while becoming at increased risk of injury itself. In this study, the effect of glenohumeral abduction angle

Quadriceps tendon tears are uncommon injuries often associated with chronic diseases, including end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The role of secondary hyperparathyroidism as a predisposing factor for tendon tears in this group of patients is well documented, and the weakening of the tendon-bone junction is part of this context. The treatment of choice for quadriceps tendon ruptures in patients with ESRD is surgery, which should be performed as soon as possible. There are several surgical techniques to be used, but the lack of comparative studies does not allow us to conclude which one is the be

Extensor mechanism injuries are not uncommon in young active individuals. Patellar tendon is a part of extensor mechanism of the knee which is commonly ruptured due to forced eccentric contraction against flexed knee. There have been reports of pathological changes in the patellar tendon which eventually lead to the rupture. The common pathologies include hypoxic tendinopathy, mucoid degeneration, calcific tendinopathy and tendolipomatosis. We report a rare case of ossified proximal patellar tendon rupture in a fit and active skittle player, who sustained indirect injury to knee while playing

Studies were carried out in 25 patients (mean age, 34.2 years) with knee or patellar problems, using a real-time scanner. The contralateral leg, which was asymptomatic, was used as a control. Identification of the patellar bone and the area of insertion of the infrapatellar tendon was not difficult. The area of insertion was less echogenic than other parts of the tendon. Patchy, partial, or total ruptures could be identified using ultrasound. Sonolucent structures in cases of Baker's cyst were easily identified. The study revealed three partial suprapatellar tendon ruptures, three partial infr

Tendons are complex connective tissues that transmit tensile forces between muscles and tendons. Tendon injuries are among the most common orthopedic problems with long-term disability as a frequent consequence due to prolonged healing time. Furthermore, the repair tissue is of inferior quality, predisposing patients to high rates of recurrence following initial injury. Coordinated cellular processes and biological factors under the influence of mechanical loading are involved in tendon healing and our understanding of these events lags behind other musculoskeletal tissues. Tendons are relativ…

Neglected Achilles tendon rupture injuries present surgical challenges because of the quality and quantity of tendon tissue during repair combined with the magnitude of mechanical forces placed on this tendon. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an acellular human dermal tissue matrix, GRAFTJACKET, as an augmentation material in neglected Achilles tendon repair. Nine patients with neglected Achilles tendon ruptures were evaluated and followed up for a minimum of 20 months. Primary repair was followed by augmentation with the graft and suturing circumferentially around the

Tibialis posterior tendon rupture in the setting of pronation-type ankle fractures can lead to long-term debility as a result of chronic tendon dysfunction. This rare injury pattern presents a diagnostic challenge because thorough preoperative examination of the function of the tendon is limited by pain, swelling, and inherent instability of the fracture. As such, a high index of suspicion is necessary in ankle fractures with radiographs showing a medial malleolus fracture with an associated suprasyndesmotic fibula fracture. This report describes 3 cases of tibialis posterior tendon rupture as

Fractures and ligamentous injuries of the front paw are common in small animals and usually result from direct trauma, such as vehicular accident, collision with a stationary object, falls from a height, or entrapment of the paw with leverage (eg, stepping in a hole while running). Metacarpal and phalangeal fractures may be associated with concurrent ligamentous injury. Tendon and paw injuries are generally associated with direct traumatic etiologies, such as laceration. Treatment of digit injuries follows the principles of surgery associated with similar injuries at other anatomic locations.

The use of orthobiologics such as platelet-rich plasma, bone marrow aspirate, and stem cells has been proposed as a biologic augmentation for treatment of various conditions of cartilage, tendon, and bone. Although the published evidence is not conclusive, the safety of these treatments and benefits in improving the biologic condition of treated tissues have been confirmed. Osteoarthritis, rotator cuff injuries, and osteonecrosis of the femoral head are three common musculoskeletal conditions associated with the use of orthobiologics in patients with cartilage, tendon, and bone injuries. It is well known that tendon or muscle interposition can cause fractures to be irreducible by closed means. A rare tendon interposition of extensor carpi ulnaris occurred in an 11-year-old boy. The isolated displaced distal ulnar physeal injury was the result of a motor vehicle accident. Attempts to perform a closed reduction failed. At operation, an interposed extensor carpi ulnaris tendon was found. After repositioning the tendon, a near anatomic reduction was easily accomplished. Only two cases seem to have been reported in the literature on the need for open reduction of distal ulnar physe

Foot drop has various etiologies, such as neurologic (peripheral nerve injury, neuropathy, lumbar radiculopathy, and cerebral lesions) or muscular (extensor muscle injury and compartment syndrome) causes. Tendon transfers can aid in the restoration of dorsiflexion in the treatment of foot drop. The tibialis posterior tendon is the primary tendon used in these surgeries for transfer. In this present study, the flexor hallucis longus tendon is transferred to the dorsum of the foot because of following knee dislocation that caused a nonfunctioning posterior tibial tendon. Isolated rupture of the flexor hallucis longus tendon is an unusual injury. We present the case of a neglected flexor hallucis longus tendon closed traumatic rupture at the plantar aspect of the first phalangeal head of the great toe in a middle-age male. The injury occurred while he was dancing. Because end-to-end tendon suture was impossible, the ensuing gap was repaired using a free plantaris tendon graft. We present the operative repair benefit of the flexor hallucis longus tendon rupture to regain the function and strength of the interphalangeal joint of the hallux, avoid extension of the
