BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease characterized by granuloma formation in various organs. Sarcoidosis-related flexor tendon contractures are uncommon in clinical settings. This contracture is similar to stenosing tenosynovitis and potentially leads to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. Herein, we report a rare case of sarcoidosis-related finger flexor tendon contracture that was misdiagnosed as tenosynovitis.
CASE SUMMARY: A 44-year-old woman presented to our department with flexion contracture of the right ring and middle fingers. The patient was misdiagnosed with tenosynovitis an

We studied the healing strength and histological changes of digital flexor tendons repaired using Kessler (core suture knots placed over the tendon surface) and modified Kessler (core suture knots placed between two tendon ends) in 31 long toes of chicken. Four weeks after surgery, the healing tendons were measured in a tensile testing machine, and the adhesion formation and histological changes were observed. The strength of the Kessler repairs was significantly greater than that of the modified Kessler repairs with a 35% mean difference. No significant difference was found between the adhesi…

Rotator cuff tears are a common soft tissue injury that can significantly decrease function of the shoulder and cause severe pain. Despite progress in surgical technique, rotator cuff repairs (RCRs) do not always heal efficiently. Many failures occur at the bone-tendon interface as a result of poor healing capacity of the tendon and failure to regenerate the native histological anatomy of the enthesis. While allografts are commercially available, clinical use is limited as they do not stimulate tissue regeneration and are associated with a structural failure of up to 40% in re-tear cases. Nove

Numerous surgical procedures for the treatment of posterior tibialis tendon (PTT) dysfunction have been developed, including tendon transfers, osteotomies, and arthrodesis. Among these methods, foot and ankle surgeons most frequently use flexor digitorum longus (FDL) tendon transfer in conjunction with medial translational osteotomy of the calcaneus. Formerly, some less invasive techniques have been described to reduce surgical-related complications after FDL tendon transfer. Herein, we introduced a new modification of short-stump FDL tendon fixation to the navicular bone and reported the func

Disruption of the extensor mechanism is debilitating with surgical repair being the accepted treatment. The incidence of infection and reoperation after extensor mechanism repair are not well reported in the literature. Thus, the objective of the current study was to (1) determine the incidence of surgical site infection and reoperation within 1 year of primary extensor mechanism repair and (2) identify independent risk factors for infection and reoperation following patellar and quadriceps tendon repair. A retrospective review of the 100% Medicare Standard Analytic files from 2005 to 2014 was

OBJECTIVE: To show the feasibility of tendon transplantation for minimally invasive pectopexy in pelvic organ prolapse repair.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients with uterine or vaginal vault prolapse (POP-Q point C Stage 2-4) were offered laparoscopic pectopexy by means of autologous semitendinosus tendon transplantation. This paper presents a case series and describes the technique regarding the first 10 patients who underwent surgery. After preparing the vagina or cervix for laparoscopic pectopexy a tendon of the patient's semitendinosus muscle was stripped and brought intraabdominally through the 10

The conventional hand tendon zones and subzones do not reflect the actual lengths covered by the involved locus of the tendon during full digital and wrist motion, which warrant reappraisal of the tendon zone concept. Because of the tendon excursions many lacerations should be regarded as multiple zone injuries. Furthermore, the length-spans of glide of the distal tendon stump and of the tendon junction (i.e. the glide zones of tendon injury and repair, respectively) are mostly not of the same length because, due to pulley release and bulkiness of the tenorrhaphy, the glide zone of tendon repa

BACKGROUND: Many orthopedic surgical procedures involve reattachment between tendon and bone. Whether bone-tendon healing is better facilitated by tendon fixation on a bone surface or within a tunnel is unknown. The purpose of this study was to comparatively evaluate the effects of bone surface versus bone trough fixation on bone-tendon healing in a rabbit patella-patellar tendon (PPT) injury model.
METHODS: The rabbits underwent partial patellectomy with patellar-tendon fixation on the osteotomy surface (bone surface fixation, BSF group) (n = 28) or within a bone trough (bone trough fixation

Tendon adhesion is a substantial challenge for tendon repair. Thermal pretreatment (TP) may decrease inflammation by upregulating heat shock proteins (HSPs). The present study intends to identify the function that TP serves when combined with HSP70 overexpression in tendon healing and adhesion in rats. Sprague‑Dawley male rats were used to establish a surgically ablative tendon postoperative suture model, and the positive expression of the HSP70 protein was measured using immunohistochemistry. Changes to the blood vessels and collagenous fiber, in addition to the maximum tensile strength and t

Achilles tendon xanthomas are rarely seen masses that are highly associated with hyperlipidemia. They are manifested in two types: Xanthomas developed secondary to familial hypercholesterolemia and cerebrotendinous xanthomatoses. In this report, we present a case of bilateral Achilles tendon xanthoma secondary to familial hypercholesterolemia and resection along with a portion of the Achilles tendon. The patient was a 49-year-old male who presented to our clinic with complaints of difficulty walking and swelling in both heels. The swellings had started insidiously without a trauma history. The

We report the case of a 32-year-old basketball player who presented with an acute flatfoot deformity after performing a unipodal power jump. Rupture of the posterior tibial tendon within the foot was diagnosed and then treated by hamstring tendon transfer combined with application of autologous biologic preparations. The functional outcome at 18 months was good. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of posterior tibial tendon rupture treated by hamstring tendon transfer.

Thyroid cancer is the most common malignant endocrine tumor. Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) accounts for 95% of thyroid cancer cases. The primary treatment for intermediate‑ and high‑risk DTC is total thyroidectomy. Postoperatively, serum thyroglobulin (Tg) and anti‑Tg antibody (Tg/Ab) levels are monitored to detect residual, recurrent or metastatic disease. Radioactive iodine (131I) therapy is administered orally when Tg and Tg/Ab levels exceed standard levels. Recombinant human thyroid‑stimulating hormone (rhTSH) administration methods that do not require thyroid hormone withdrawal trea

The etiology of rotator cuff tendon overuse injuries is still not well understood. Furthermore, how this overuse injury impacts other components of the glenohumeral joint, including nearby articular cartilage, is also unclear. Therefore, this study sought to better understand the time course of tendon protease activity in a rat model of supraspinatus overuse, as well as determine effects of 10 weeks of overuse on humeral head articular cartilage. For these studies, multiplex gelatin zymography was used to characterize protease activity profiles in tendon and cartilage, while histological scori

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous ruptures of extension pollicis longus tendon predominantly occur after undisplaced or minimally displaced distal radial fracture near Lister tubercle. Systemic inflammatory diseases and systemic or local steroid, mechanical causes like bony ridges, presence of bone plate or external fixator pin may precipitate this. Repetitive uses in certain occupation like cooking, cow milking, tailoring and direct trauma in kick boxer are also identified as cause. In this study it is caused by screw tip that also after 20 years. Instead of tendon transfer, interposition tendon graf

PURPOSE: After complex hand trauma, restoration of tendon strength is challenging. Tendon insertion tears typically heal as fibrous scars after surgical reconstruction and create a weak point at the tendon-bone interface. In addition, major tendon loss may overwhelm the amount of available autograft for reconstruction. An off-the-shelf product may help address these challenges. We hypothesized that decellularized human flexor digitorum profundus and distal phalanx tendon-bone composite grafts were a feasible option for flexor tendon reconstruction after complex hand trauma. By replacing the en
