Apoptosis in developmental and repair-related human tooth remodeling: a view from the inside.

Apoptosis is a key phenomenon in the regulation of the life span of odontoblasts, which are responsible for dentin matrix production of the … act growing teeth, the sequential rearrangement of odontoblasts into a multi-layer structure during tooth crown formation was correlated with an apoptotic wave that leads to the massive elimination of odontoblasts. These data suggest that apoptosis, coincident with dentin deposition changes, plays a role in tooth maturation and homeostasis. Massive apoptotic …

Mesiodens as a risk factor in treatment of trauma cases.

The presence of mesiodens often results in complications including retention of primary teeth and delayed eruption of permanent teeth, closure of eruption path, rotations, retention, root resorption, pulp necrosis, and diastema as well as nasal eruption and formation of dentigerous and primordial cysts. Less common complications involving the permanent incisors include dilaceration of the developing roots and loss of tooth vitality. Therefore, early diagnosis of mesiodens has particular importance in terms of preventing such complications. However, with respect to surgical removal of mesiodens

Exploring fiberglass post numbers for enhanced fatigue resistance in molars without coronary remnants.

This study aimed to assess the fatigue resistance of molars lacking a coronary remnant, using zero, one, two, or three fiberglass posts. Forty caries/crack-free human molars with coronal portions removed at the pulp chamber floor were randomly allocated into four groups (n=10). Following endodontic treatment, posts (Whitepost DC/DC.E 0.5, 1.0, FGM) were silanized (silane agent, Angelus) and cemented with a resin cement (RelyX U200, 3M ESPE). Resin composite cores (Z350, 3M ESPE) were built, and metal crowns were fabricated and cemented using the same luting system. Samples underwent cyclic fat

A new lungfish (Ceratodontoidei, Dipnoi) from the Early Jurassic of Chongqing, China.

Dipnoi (lungfishes) are a group of air-breathing sarcopterygian fishes that survived over hundreds of millions of years and their crown members (Neoceratodus, Lepidosiren and Protopterus) are among the closest living relatives of the tetrapods. After the end-Triassic mass extinction, dipnoan diversity was supposedly low, and all Early Jurassic remains were once ascribed to a single genus, Ceratodus on the basis of isolated tooth plates. Later studies indicate that Ceratodus might be an assemblage of forms with disparate cranial morphology. Here, we report the discovery of a new lungfish, Sinoc

Dental anomalies associated with amelogenesis imperfecta: a radiographic assessment.

Amelogenesis imperfecta, a group of hereditary conditions primarily affecting the enamel, has been associated with dental anomalies, including taurodontism, congenitally missing teeth, delayed eruption, crown resorption, and abnormal enamel density. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of these anomalies in an amelogenesis imperfecta population. The study group consisted of members of 9 unrelated families--22 family members with amelogenesis imperfecta and 13 unaffected family members. Panoramic radiographs were evaluated for taurodontism, congenitally missing teeth, delayed

Effects of 3 different residual root treatments after post-and-core restoration: An in vitro fracture resistance experiment and finite element analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Crown-lengthening procedures (CLPs) and orthodontic eruption procedures (OEPs) improve the biomechanical properties of residual root restoration. However, their use is limited by clinic time, cost, and crown-root ratio. An inner shoulder retention form (ISRF) overcomes these limits; however, whether ISRF meets the biomechanical requirements is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro and finite element analysis (FEA) study was to evaluate the effects of 3 residual root treatments (ISRF, CLP, and OEP) on premolar fracture resistance and stress distribution after pos

Validating Dental Histology for Perinatal Age Estimation Using Human Deciduous Teeth.

OBJECTIVES: This study tests the accuracy of dental histology for perinatal age estimation using deciduous teeth from modern human infants of known age. We evaluate whether enamel and dentin incremental structures, particularly the Neonatal Line (NNL), can be used to provide a reliable estimate of chronological age. SAMPLES AND METHODS: Seventeen unerupted deciduous teeth from 14 full-term infants (0-164 days old) were analyzed from the Granada identified skeletal collection in Spain. Thin sections were examined under transmitted light and confocal microscopy to identify the NNL, cross-striat

Age estimation of Arabian mares by incisors morphometry and dentition changes.

Accurate estimation of a horse's age based on the condition of the tooth status is necessary as a scientific and artistic technique, which has not been performed so far in pure Arabian horses of Khuzestan (southern west of Iran). This study aimed to investigate the age-dependent changes in the morphology and morphometry of the incisors in Arabian mares of Khuzestan to estimate age and to compare the estimated dental age and actual age. In this study, 78 Arabian mares of Khuzestan were examined in several equestrian clubs. Then, images were taken with a digital camera from the vestibular and oc

Compensatory interactions between developing maxillary anterior teeth in a sample of twins.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to revisit the topic of compensatory interactions between maxillary anterior teeth during development advanced by Sofaer et al. (1971). We addressed the hypotheses listed by Sofaer and colleagues using data derived from our Australian twin sample to investigate whether final tooth size in permanent maxillary central incisors and canines showed evidence of developmental compensation for adjacent missing or microdont lateral incisors. Such compensation is one factor interacting in the complex system of dental development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 2D i

Dento-facial relationships in individuals with normal occlusion.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships of selected facial measurements with mesio-distal crown widths and dental arch dimensions in individuals with normal occlusions. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 276 subjects with Angle's Class I normal occlusions. Three-dimensional images of the face and dental casts were captured and analyzed using stereophotogrammetric systems. Significant correlations were found between the sagittal facial variables and both upper and lower dental arch dimensions and to lesser degree with the horizontal and vertical variables. The values of co

Crown-root Fracture Restoration on a Patient with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Children with intellectual and physical disabilities including autism are susceptible to dental trauma as a sequela from falls due to poor muscular coordination. In addition, their altered muscle tonus often results in an open bite with labial flaring of the maxillary incisors and lip incompetence, predisposing these teeth to fractures. This case report describes an alternative approach of restoring a fractured maxillary permanent central incisor with a composite strip crown during surgical repositioning of the periodontium on an autistic patient. The prognosis of the incisor is guarded due to

Prediction of maxillary canine impaction using sectors and angular measurement.

Maxillary canine impaction has an incidence of 1 in 100 in the general population and has been reported as much higher in an individual orthodontic practice. Because patients with canine impactions generally have longer treatment times, depending on the location of the impacted tooth, early identification of impaction is of critical interest to the orthodontist. Sector location and angulation of the unerupted tooth have been analyzed previously as predictors of canine eruption after deciduous extraction. Additionally, sector location has been studied as an indicator of eventual impaction, resu

An unfamiliar presentation of a lateral periodontal cyst.

Lateral periodontal cyst, developmental in origin, typically is observed in the cuspid-bicuspid region of the mandible and less frequently in the maxilla. It may arise initially as a dentigerous cyst developing by expansion of the follicle along the lateral surface of the crown which eventually comes to lie on the lateral aspect of the root if tooth eruption is normal. Alternatively, it may arise from the cell rests of malassez. The incidence of lateral periodontal cysts has been reported to be less than 1% and these cysts represent nearly 0.8% of all central cysts of the maxillary bone. Here
