Oral health is a mediator for disease severity in patients with Behçet's disease: A multiple mediation analysis study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to examine whether oral health as an infection focus could mediate disease course in patients with Behçet's disease (BD). METHODS: In the study, oral health of 194 BD patients was examined at baseline and follow-up periods. The reasons for last dental visits were recorded as tooth extraction or regular control visits/planned treatments at the end of follow-up period. The Behçet's disease severity score was calculated with higher scores indicating a more severe course. Mediation analysis was carried out to assess the effects of oral health on disease severi

Whole-genome sequencing in a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Whole-genome sequencing may revolutionize medical diagnostics through rapid identification of alleles that cause disease. However, even in cases with simple patterns of inheritance and unambiguous diagnoses, the relationship between disease phenotypes and their corresponding genetic changes can be complicated. Comprehensive diagnostic assays must therefore identify all possible DNA changes in each haplotype and determine which are responsible for the underlying disorder. The high number of rare, heterogeneous mutations present in all humans and the paucity of known functional varia

Impact of socio-demographic variables, oral hygiene practices and oral habits on periodontal health status of Indian elderly: a community-based study.

Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss. It is has insidious onset, chronic course, and commonly result due to cumulative effect of dietary habits, oral hygiene methods and oral habits practiced over the years. This study was planned to evaluate the periodontal health status of elderly population (above 60 years) in the community, using CPITN index, gingival recession, mobility of teeth and halitosis, using modified WHO Oral Health Survey Proforma. In addition, impact of several socio-demographic variables, oral hygiene practices, oral habits, chronic systemic diseases, diet

Decrease in posterior occlusal support area can accelerate tooth loss: The Suita study.

Purpose A decrease in posterior occlusal support is considered to increase the load on remaining teeth and thus accelerate tooth loss. Therefore, a follow-up study was carried out to perform a longitudinal analysis of the association between the posterior occlusal support region and tooth loss. Methods The participants of the study were 806 Suita Study participants who underwent physical health checkups both at baseline and at follow-up. The participants were classified into three groups by posterior occlusal support area (POSA) using the Eichner Index at baseline: Perfect POSA group, Eichner A

A rare case of osteogenesis imperfecta combined with complete tooth loss.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable disorder of the connective tissue characterized by blue sclerae, osteoporosis and bone fragility. Dentinogenesis imperfecta type I is commonly seen in OI patients, but other dental impairments, such as tooth agenesis or complete tooth loss, are rarely reported for these patients. Here, we report the case of a 37-year-old female Chinese OI patient who experienced complete tooth loss before puberty. The patient has a family history of OI and her father has a history of tooth loss. She showed obvious OI phenotypes, including a dwarfed stature, blue scle

Association between tooth loss and kidney function: indirect roles of oxidative stress and systemic inflammation in NHANES 2001-2020.

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are globally prevalent conditions with substantial impacts on overall health. Previous evidence suggests an association between tooth loss and CKD, but its characteristics and potential biological pathways remain unclear. This study examined the association between tooth loss and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)-related CKD and explored potential indirect associations of systemic oxidative stress, quantified by the oxidative balance score (OBS), and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII). METHODS: We conducted a cross-se

Clustering Analysis of Partial Tooth Loss Patterns and Their Association With Cardiovascular Health Using a Japanese Claims Database.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular health (CVH), defined by the American Heart Association, aims to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths and improve overall health. Poor oral health, including tooth loss, is increasingly linked to higher CVD risk. However, the effects of specific partial tooth loss patterns on CVH remain unclear. This study aimed to identify clinically relevant tooth loss patterns and evaluate their association with CVH in a large Japanese population. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Health insurance claims data were obtained from the JMDC database

Does the premature loss of primary anterior teeth cause morphological, functional and psychosocial consequences?

Premature loss of primary anterior teeth in deciduous arches is a controversial topic in the literature, especially due to the lack of robust scientific evidence regarding the types and magnitudes of the consequences involved. Morphological, functional, and psychosocial problems may arise from untreated premature loss of primary incisors and canines. The morphological problems include impaction and eruption disturbances of permanent successors; inclination and/or extrusion of adjacent and antagonist teeth, respectively; midline deviation; and crowding. Functional complications, such as speech

[A clinical study of traumatic injuries to deciduous teeth. (3). The influence on their permanent successors].

To study the influence of traumatic injuries to deciduous teeth on their permanent successors, we investigated 126 traumatized deciduous incisors of 66 children who had visited our clinic regularly after traumatic injuries, and whose permanent successors had erupted. The results are summarized as follows. 1) Some developmental disturbances on permanent successors, such as concerning their eruption, or crowns, roots and pulp, were found in 72 teeth. Among these, influences on crown formation and calcification were most often found, and white discoloration in the enamel was recorded in 55 teeth,

2025 FelineVMA feline oral health and dental care guidelines.

Oral and dental diseases are commonplace in cats, imposing a responsibility on primary care veterinarians to provide high quality oral healthcare for their feline patients. While patient assessment begins with an examination of the conscious cat, further assessment under anesthesia is necessary for the purposes of radiography and treatment, making anesthesia an essential component of feline dentistry. Because feline patients with oral and dental diseases, as well as those convalescing from surgery, generally experience pain, multimodal perioperative analgesia and anesthesia are standard featur

Science-Informed Health Policies for Oral and Systemic Health.

Oral, dental and craniofacial (ODC) health has a profound impact on general health and welfare throughout life, yet US dentists and physicians operate across misaligned silos. This protracted division limits access to optimal health, supports fee for services, and exacerbates health disparities. Early in the 20th century, the most frequent dental therapy was tooth extraction: removed infected teeth were substituted by prosthetic appliances - commonly, dentures or nothing. Most adults assumed becoming edentulous was a normal corollary of aging. With the discovery of penicillin and other antibio

The Current and Potential Application of Medicinal Cannabis Products in Dentistry.

Oral and dental diseases are a major global burden, the most common non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and may even affect an individual's general quality of life and health. The most prevalent dental and oral health conditions are tooth decay (otherwise referred to as dental caries/cavities), oral cancers, gingivitis, periodontitis, periodontal (gum) disease, Noma, oro-dental trauma, oral manifestations of HIV, sensitive teeth, cracked teeth, broken teeth, and congenital anomalies such as cleft lip and palate. Herbs have been utilized for hundreds of years in traditional Chinese, African and I

[Reattachment or new attachment in apical-marginal periodontal bone loss. A clinical-histological discussion].

Loss of marginal alveolar bone of the tooth can be caused by periodontal, pulpal-periapical, or a combined pulpal and periodontal disease. The regeneration is supported by the formation of reattachment or new attachment. Reattachment is probably the usual healing process in periapical surgery of the tooth with apicomarginal bone loss caused by pulpal-periapical disease. In animal experiments (rats, dogs) ist was well documented, that the cells which repopulate the periodontal wound adjacent to the root surface determine the nature of the attachment formed.

[Contribution to the therapy of Menière's disease (author's transl)].

A case report is presented about a patient with typical Menière's disease of the left inner ear. The surgical therapy by means of saccotomy brought only slight improvement. After consultation of the maxillofacial surgeon an impact upper left wisdom tooth was discovered and surgically treated. since this time the symptoms of the Menière's disease have disappeared. Possible connections concerning the localization of the wisdom tooth and the neighbouring anatomical structures are discussed and give a possible clue to a new form of therapy.

Eruption disturbances of permanent molars: a review.

Eruption disturbances of permanent molars may become clinically and radiographically manifest as impaction, primary retention or secondary retention. This may result in clinical problems such as malocclusion and loss of neighboring teeth due to caries and periodontal disease. Which of these disorders will develop, depends primarily on the eruptive stage. Factors that may interfere with the eruptive stages (i.e. follicular growth, pre-emergent eruptive spurt, postemergent eruptive spurt, juvenile occlusal equilibrium, circumpubertal occlusal eruptive spurt, adult occlusal equilibrium) and the c

Urinary total 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanonol is positively associated with tooth loss.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Epidemiological studies had confirmed a fundamental association between smoking and tooth loss, but it remains unclear whether metabolites of tobacco products such as total 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanonol (TNNAL) play a role in the incidence and progress of tooth loss. This study aims to investigate the relationship between TNNAL and tooth loss as well as how systemic inflammatory indexes mediate this process. METHODS: The cross-sectional study data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in the United States. After sc

The effect of osteoporosis on periodontal status, alveolar bone and orthodontic tooth movement. A literature review.

Osteoporosis, an age-related condition, is defined as a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and micro-architectural deterioration with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. It is considered the most common bone metabolic disease and it constitutes a major public health problem. Several studies indicate that osteoporosis may be related to decreased oral bone density and alveolar bone loss. In osteoporotic patients, uncoupling of bone resorption and bone formation has taken place. Both bone resorption and bone formation are accelerated, and
