Dry socket is one of the postoperative complications of tooth extraction. It is the partial or total loss of the post-extraction blood clot, resulting in severe pain that usually starts one to five days postoperatively, with clinical evidence of exposed alveolar bone, necrotic debris, halitosis, and tenderness on examination. The purpose of our systematic review was to answer the question "Is there a relationship between smoking and dry socket?". After meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria, eleven studies were included in this systematic review (according to the PRISMA statement guideli

Pseudo class III malocclusion is reverse anterior occlusion or anterior cross-bite with first molars and canines in a class I relationship. It is very important to diagnose the pseudo class III from true skeletal class III. The combination of anterior displacement of the mandible, tooth wear, and loss of occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) in adults may result anterior cross-bite. The key factor in diagnosis of this malocclusion is an interdisciplinary approach with an orthodontist. Cephalometric images are essential for diagnosis of pseudo class III mal-occlusion. Dentin hypersensitivity is a common condition of transient tooth pain associated with a variety of exogenous stimuli. There is substantial variation in the response to such stimuli from one person to another. Except for sensitivity associated with tooth bleaching or other tooth pathology, the clinical cause of dentin hypersensitivity is exposed dentinal tubules as a result of gingival recession and subsequent loss of cementum on root surfaces. The most widely accepted theory of how the pain occurs is Brännström's hydrodynamic theory of dentin hypersensitivity. Dentinal hypersensitivity must be

The periodontal ligament is located between the bone (alveolar bone) and the cementum of the tooth, and it is connected by tough fibers called Sharpey's fibers. To maintain healthy teeth, the foundation supporting the teeth must be healthy. Periodontal diseases, also known as tooth loss, cause the alveolar bone to dissolve. The alveolar bone, similar to the bones in other body parts, is repeatedly resorbed by osteoclasts and renewed by osteogenic cells. This means that an old bone is constantly being resorbed and replaced by a new bone. In periodontal diseases, the alveolar bone around the tee…

This prospective clinical study involved 20 patients in whom implants were immediately placed in extraction sockets. Residual bone defects were grafted, and the buccal bone plate was overcontoured with a xenogeneic bone substitute and covered by a collagen membrane. One year after implant placement, CBCT images were acquired to evaluate buccal bone, and implant stability was analyzed through resonance frequency analysis. Results showed that buccal bone covered the rough surface of all implants 1 year after implantation. Hard tissues responded more favorably in the flapless group. No correlatio

Dentin dysplasia type I is a rare hereditary disturbance of dentin formation characterized clinically by nearly normal appearing crowns and severe hypermobility of teeth. Radiographic analysis shows obliteration of all pulp chambers, short, blunted, and malformed roots, and periapical radiolucencies of noncarious teeth. This paper presents 2 cases demonstrating both classic and atypical features of type I dentin dysplasia in the mixed and permanent dentitions. The clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic\findings of this condition and treatment are described.

Extraction of impacted inferior molars is becoming a frequent surgical intervention in Ivory Coast. Patients are mainly young adults who come for consultation due to difficult eruption of the impacted molars. They are often referred after attempted extraction by professional colleagues. Perioperative difficulties during, extraction of inferior molars depict. particular dental character of Negroid African: limited surgical sundries, perioperative haemorrhage, intraosseous anatomical relation with inferior dental nerve, corono-radicular morphology of the tooth.

This case report refers to an 11-year-old boy with avulsion of the upper left central and lateral incisors. The teeth were replanted after 4 h, splinted with a semi-rigid splint for 12 days, and then endodontically treated. Severe progressive root resorption was seen after 2 years and the teeth were extracted. The boy had a normal occlusion with spacing in both jaws and slight protrusion of the anterior teeth. The treatment objectives were to close some of the spaces by mesial movement of the buccal segments in the upper jaw to minimize bone loss for a future single osseointegrated implant. Fi

Preservation of space after premature loss of the second primary molar is essential to prevent mesial drifting of the permanent first molar. Various modifications of distal shoe space maintainers, which have been documented, are all nonfunctional in nature. This paper describes an innovative design of a functional distal shoe space maintainer that is intended to overcome the disadvantages of conventional non-functional space maintainers and that does not hamper the periodontal status of the abutment tooth.

A treatment option for managing furcation invasions is root amputation. Long-term survival of resected molars requires a complete harmony of sequential endodontic, periodontic, restorative and maintenance procedures. The main objective of this article is to provide a concise historical perspective of this procedure and to review available literature regarding its efficacy and limitations. It also illustrates a current modification of the procedure using guided bone regeneration (GBR) and socket preservation to eliminate some of the potential disadvantages of the traditional root amputation pro

This study aims to review and analyze the impact of light-emitting diode (LED) photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy on orthodontic tooth movement. This non-invasive technique is proposed to reduce time-related side effects, such as white spot lesions, dental caries, and root resorption. Five studies were included in the review, comprising two animal studies (ages 10 and 12 weeks) and three human studies (ages ranging from 15 to 17 years). All studies applied PBM concurrently with force application using sliding mechanics for canine retraction (three studies) and molar protraction (two studies). Tw

In regions where preventive dentistry is widespread, tooth loss due to root fracture occurs approximately 10 times more frequently than that due to caries and periodontal disease. Root fracture is most likely to occur in non-vital teeth, where the dental pulp has been removed, often through a procedure known as pulpectomy. However, super minimally invasive pulp (SMIP) therapy has recently been reported as a novel treatment approach for pulpitis of any degree. In this study, SMIP therapy was performed to preserve the vitality of teeth in two patients with severe pulpitis. Case one involved a 35…

Formation of functional skeletal tissues requires highly organized steps of mesenchymal progenitor cell differentiation. The dental follicle (DF) surrounding the developing tooth harbors mesenchymal progenitor cells for various differentiated cells constituting the tooth root-bone interface and coordinates tooth eruption in a manner dependent on signaling by parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) and the PTH/PTHrP receptor (PPR). However, the identity of mesenchymal progenitor cells in the DF and how they are regulated by PTHrP-PPR signaling remain unknown. Here, we show that the PTHrP-PP

Coordinated differentiation of the ameloblast cell layer is essential to enamel matrix protein deposition and subsequent mineralization. It has been hypothesized that this process is governed by Cx43-based gap junctional intercellular communication as oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD) patients harboring autosomal-dominant mutations in Cx43 exhibit enamel defects typically resulting in early adulthood tooth loss. To assess the role of Cx43 in tooth development we employ a mouse model of ODDD that harbors a G60S Cx43 mutant, Gja1(Jrt)/+, and appears to exhibit tooth abnormalities that mimic the…

Orthodontic tooth movement may be enhanced by the application of a magnetic field. Bone remodelling necessary for orthodontic tooth movement involves clastic cells, which are tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) positive and which may also be regulated by growth hormone (GH) via its receptor (GHR). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a static magnetic field (SMF) on orthodontic tooth movement in the rat. Thirty-two male Wistar rats, 9 weeks old, were fitted with an orthodontic appliance directing a mesial force of 30 g on the left maxillary first molar. The appliance inc
