PURPOSE: Tuberculosis is a common disease worldwide that is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is primarily a pulmonary disease, but extrapulmonary manifestations are not uncommon, especially in children and adolescents.
METHODS: We present two pediatric patients who underwent surgery in our clinic for Pott's disease in the upper thoracic region. The patients were investigated to describe their age, complaints, neurological examination results, disease location, surgical procedure, and complications.
RESULTS: The patients were 2 and 14 years old and exhibited disease located

A patient aged 16 years was admitted to a neurological departement for flaccid paresis of lower extremities. Contrast radiological examination demonstrated obliteration of the vertebral canal between Th12 and L3, without coexistent changes in the bone parts of the vertebral column on plain films. During the operation a tumour situated epidurally and compressing the dural sac posteriorly and laterally from both sides at the level Th12--L3 was removed. Histological examination of the excised tumour showed presence of a chronic inflammatory process with presence of granulation tissue of probably

BACKGROUND: Morbidity and mortality from tuberculosis, a significant infectious illness, are expected to rise worldwide. The projected number of new cases rose from 7.5 million in 1990 to 11.9 million in 2005, a 58.6% increase in 2011. The widespread belief that TB is no longer a public health concern is unfounded; on the contrary, the link between HIV/AIDS and antibiotic resistance has further exacerbated the crisis that already existed. Similar to the nations in sub-Saharan Africa, India is now considered a Group IV country, with an annual risk of infection between 1% and 2.5%. 2. Although 6

We are currently witnessing a worldwide return of tuberculosis. An extremely rare form is tuberculosis of the spine which is reported above all in extra-European studies. The authors report a case of Pott's disease in a child aged 3 years and 3 months who was referred to their attention due to the appearance of left inguinal swelling, fever and anemia. Diagnostic tests (ETG, CT, MR) showed an abscess involving the L5-S1 intersomatic space, the intervertebral disc and osteolytic lesions of S1, with impairment of the left psoas muscle and diffusion as far as the inguinal region. Chemotherapy was

Physicians can expect to see more mycobacterial bone and joint disease in North America as a result of increased travel, immigration, and use of immunosuppressive medications. The first step in treating infections caused by these organisms is to consider the diagnosis early in the course of illness. Long-standing untreated mycobacterial infections typically cause significant bone destruction and loss of function. The treatment of mycobacterial bone and joint infection requires prolonged antibiotic therapy, often in conjunction with surgical intervention, particularly for spinal tuberculosis.

Four cases of tuberculosis of the cervical spine with quadriparesis either from subluxation, and/or compression of the spinal cord are described. Our surgical approach has been laminectomy with excision of abscess and cervical fusion. Pre and post operative cervical traction with Crutchfield tongs on Stryker beds was employed in three of the four cases. Excision of these abscesses and cervical fusion, following improvement of the nutritional status and adjunctive chemotherapy, can reverse paralysis in these patients. Three of our four patients recovered.

OBJECTIVE: To report our therapeutic experience with tuberculosis of the lower cervical spine with neurological complications in 9 adults in Gabon.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of these 9 adults treated for progressive Pott's tetraplegia or paraplegia from 1982 to 1998 was conducted. The medical treatment consisted of the early administration in the first 3 patients of rifampin, isoniazid and ethambutol for 18 months; and, in the remaining 6 patients, of rifampin, isoniazid, ethambutol and pyrazinamide for 6 months. This medical treatment was systematically started 3 weeks befo

A tight but painless soft-tissue swelling in the left parasternal region, with chronic cough and lumbo-ischial pain becoming progressively more severe over several months, occurred in a 27-year-old man. The chest X-ray film was normal, radiography of the iliosacral joints revealed right-sided sacroiliitis. In the further course of the illness night sweat, nightly fever up to 38 degrees C and weight loss of 7 kg in two months, as well as severe treatment-resistant earache developed. When hospitalized, another chest X-ray film showed disseminated small nodular foci pointing to tuberculosis. Sput

BACKGROUND Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) involves a continuous inflammatory lesion that spans 3 or more spinal segments. It is a recognized but rare manifestation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. CASE REPORT A 51-year-old man originally from Mexico with a significant past medical history presented with altered mental status. He had a 1-year history of a chronic non-productive cough and approximately 20 days of fevers and headaches. Upon admission, he was encephalopathic without neurological deficits, and his Glasgow Coma Scale score was 11. A non-contrast computed

Core needle biopsy is widely used to diagnose spinal lesions. Final histopathological report of the specimen usually can be given after several days. These several days delay may prevent early treatment in some patients. Our aim was to investigate if treatment of spinal lesions could be started according to the immediate cytologic evaluation of the core needle biopsy. The cytological materials of the 213 core needle spinal biopsy were prepared immediately after biopsy procedure. Of these biopsies, only 101 core needle biopsy had a final diagnosis which formed the backbone of the current study.

Chronic relapsing/remitting experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) can be induced in 8-week-old female SJL/J(H-2) mice via inoculation with the p139-151 peptide of myelin proteolipid protein (PLP), Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT), complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), and Bordatella pertussis. EAE is a relevant preclinical model of MS that incorporates several aspects of the clinical disease. Chief among these are the inflammatory mediated neurological deficits. While the impact of localized spinal cord demyelination on neurotransmission has been modeled successfully, relatively little wo

CONTEXT: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics, diagnosis, and management of tuberculous longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (TB-LETM), a rare manifestation of tuberculosis.
FINDINGS: We analyzed two rare cases of TB-LETM and discussed their clinical manifestations and imaging findings in the context of the relevant literature. Patient 1, a 23-year-old female, presented with quadriplegia and dysuria, and spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed lesions extending from C1 to T3. Patient 2, an 18-year-old female, reported acute-onset numbness and weakness in both l
