Associations of MRI-Derived Glymphatic System Impairment With Global White Matter Damage and Cognitive Impairment in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A DTI-ALPS Study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing the glymphatic function using diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) may be helpful f … diffusivity (PSMD) was used to assess global white matter damage. Cognitive tests included Auditory Verbal Learning Test and Digit Span Test (forward and backward). STATISTICAL TESTS: Neuroimaging findings comparisons were done between mTBI and control groups. Partial correlation and multivariable linear regression assessed the associations between DTI-ALPS, PSM …

The autism spectrum phenotype in ADNP syndrome.

Pathogenic disruptions to the activity-dependent neuroprotector homeobox (ADNP) gene are among the most common heterozygous genetic mutations associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Individuals with ADNP disruptions share a constellation of medical and psychiatric features, including ASD, intellectual disability (ID), dysmorphic features, and hypotonia. However, the profile of ASD symptoms associated with ADNP may differ from that of individuals with another ASD-associated single gene disruption or with ASD without a known genetic cause. The current study examined the ASD phenotype i

Modelling children's grammar learning via caregiver feedback in natural conversations.

Many debates in the language acquisition literature have revolved around the role of negative evidence for the acquisition of grammar. The scientific study of this question has not been settled with traditional research methods, given that it requires handling children's natural social interaction while controlling for the specific role of error-contingent feedback, independent of other types of input. Here, we leveraged computational modelling to test whether there are learning gains in grammar induced by caregivers' feedback above and beyond learning from input alone. More specifically, we c

Assessment of nutrition and learning skills in children aged 5-11 years old from two elementary schools in Chocó, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition has been identified as a factor in growth and learning. The current study aimed to determine the nutritional status and basic learning skills of children from Chocó, Colombia. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 631 children aged 5-11 years from two schools, collecting anthropometric measurements, nutritional quality surveys and sociodemographic data. Neuropsychological batteries were applied. RESULTS: A total of 523 children were evaluated, with an average age of 8.49 ± 2.1 years. The results revealed that 2.9% of children were underweight, 0.4% were se

Modality and redundancy effects, and their relation to executive functioning in children with dyslexia.

Children with dyslexia are often provided with audio-support to compensate for their reading problems, but this may intervene with their learning. The aim of the study was to examine modality and redundancy effects in 21 children with dyslexia, compared to 21 typically developing peers (5th grade), on study outcome (retention and transfer knowledge) and study time in user-paced learning environments and the role of their executive functions (verbal and visual working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility) on these effects. Results showed no effects on retention knowledge. Regarding tra

Communication skills workshops in learning disability nursing.

This article investigates the effects of a combination of direct speech, language therapy and staff training on the communication skills of nursing and support staff working with people who have a severe learning disability and challenging behaviour. The approach aimed to help staff choose, prioritize and implement changes in communication. The input was effective in increasing the knowledge of the staff group with regard to challenging behaviour and communication breakdown, and in changing the communicative behaviour of staff. The changes measured were those of longer interactions occurring b

Time estimation as a neuronal network property: a lesion study.

The neural substrate of estimating short temporal intervals is still unknown. We investigated the ability of patients with infarctions of the middle cerebral artery of either the left or the right hemisphere to estimate verbally and produce time intervals of seconds by counting. Patients showed long-lasting and stable deficits in time estimation in both methods, with either extreme acceleration or deceleration in apparent time compared with healthy controls. A lesion of the posterior part of the supralenticular white matter proved to be responsible for these deficits. Disruption of interneuron

Developmental dyslexia revisited and projected.

There are three parts to this paper. First, I review briefly the signposts from research, theory, and application in developmental dyslexia in the 1960s and the 1970s that have led us from there to here, and show the pitfalls to avoid. Second, I discuss some of the pertinent issues of the 1980s: the role of intelligence in the diagnosis of children with specific reading disabilities, the distribution of reading difficulties and disabilities, and the important place of verbal efficiency. Third, I project to the 1990s to emphasize the challenge of the computer technology as mediated learning and

Impact of visual impairment on measures of cognitive function for children with congenital toxoplasmosis: implications for compensatory intervention strategies.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this work was to determine whether visual impairment caused by toxoplasmic chorioretinitis is associated with impaired performance of specific tasks on standardized tests of cognitive function. If so, then we worked to determine whether there are patterns in these difficulties that provide a logical basis for development of measures of cognitive function independent of visual impairment and compensatory intervention strategies to facilitate learning for such children. METHODS: Sixty-four children with congenital toxoplasmosis with intelligence quotient scores > or =

Exploratory evaluation of baseline cognition as a predictor of perceived benefit in a study of behavioral therapy for urinary incontinence in Parkinson disease.

AIMS: While behavior-based pelvic floor muscle exercise therapy is an effective treatment for overactive bladder in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, cognitive function may be a predictor of rehabilitation outcomes. METHODS: In a planned exploratory analysis, participants who had a Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) with a score ≥18 who were randomized in a clinical trial to behavioral treatment were classified by perceived improvement (Benefit vs. No Benefit) as reported on a validated Satisfaction and Benefit Questionnaire. Cognitive functioning in essential tremor without dementia: a clinical and imaging study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To explore the cognitive functioning of ET patients without dementia and delineate its imaging counterpart. METHODS: We enrolled 99 subjects (49 non-demented ET patients and 50 education-matched healthy controls) that underwent neuropsychological and MRI evaluation. In order to identify the cognitive parameters that better reflect the profile of ET patients, we used a double statistical approach: (i) direct comparison between groups and (ii) machine learning approach with feature selection. Then, to evaluate the correlation between cognitive performances and the degree of

The Role of Neurohypophyseal Hormones Vasopressin and Oxytocin in Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although the neurohypophyseal hormones vasopressin (VP) and oxytocin (OT) are mostly known for their role respectively in antidiuresis, and in labour, lactation and maternal behavior, both might exert widespread influences either on emotion and cognition in healthy subjects, showing some gender-related differences. They interact with each other facilitating shifts between positive socially- oriented and defensive states. In fact, VP amplifies the reactivity to stressors showing also beneficial effects on attention, verbal learning as well as memory, whereas OT reduces…

Education of the physician in child abuse.

Child abuse training often mirrors the development of the field of child abuse by focusing on identification and reporting at the expense of other topics. Physical abuse, and recently sexual abuse, have been emphasized, although neglect is more often reported. The training approach should also include information on epidemiologies, treatment, and prevention. A high index of suspicion can be taught by learning to identify specific physical and behavioral patterns of abuse, and discrepancies between history and the child's condition, and developing better interview skills. Physicians need to kno
