Restoration of vision II: residual functions and training-induced visual field enlargement in brain-damaged patients.

PURPOSE: Brain damage is often accompanied by visual field defects which have been considered to be non-treatable. In recent years, however, new diagnostic methods have revealed hitherto unknown residual vision, which was found, for instance, in transition zones near the blind visual field sectors and in spared islands of vision within the blind regions ("blindsight"). Furthermore, animal studies revealed a high degree of plasticity in the visual system suggesting the possibility that recovery of vision may be induced by systematic visual training. METHODS: Here we summarize a series of studi

Near Phoria and Near Point of Convergence Parameters in Children With Hearing and Speech Impairment: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Children with hearing and speech impairment are reported to have a higher prevalence of refractive errors and amblyopia. Most studies conducted previously have not primarily concentrated on the binocular vision aspects of near vision in children with hearing impairment (HI). The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the parameters of near phoria and near point of convergence (NPC) among hearing and speech impaired school children with age matched control group of emmetropic non hearing-impaired Children. METHODS: A total of 279 participants in the age range of

Implications of monocular vision for racing drivers.

We performed two experiments to investigate how monocular vision and a monocular generalized reduction in vision (MRV) impact driving performance during racing. A total of 75 visually normal students or professional racing drivers, were recruited for the two experiments. Driving performance was evaluated under three visual conditions: normal vision, simulated monocularity and simulated monocular reduction in vision. During the driving scenario, the drivers had to detect and react to the sudden intrusion of an opponent's racing car into their trajectory when entering a turn. Generalized Linear

Anomalies of genetic development as predictors of oculo-visual abnormalities in velo-cardio-facial syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Subjects with velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) were assessed to determine whether the learning disabilities (LDs) characterizing the syndrome are compounded by visual function deficits, which would be predicted on the basis of the proposed embryonic derivation of the genetic anomaly. METHODS: Twelve subjects diagnosed with VCFS underwent a vision screening with emphasis on binocular function. RESULTS: Subjects exhibited deficits in accommodation (N = 5), convergence (N = 7), fusional reserves (N = 9), and stereopsis (N = 10). Three patients were strabismic at near. No patient w

Structure-function correlations in Retinitis Pigmentosa patients with partially preserved vision: a voxel-based morphometry study.

Retinitis Pigmentosa is a group of hereditary retinal dystrophy disorders associated with progressive peripheral visual field loss. The impact of this retinal loss in cortical gray matter volume has not been addressed before in Retinitis Pigmentosa patients with low vision. Voxel-based morphometry was applied to study whole brain gray matter volume changes in 27 Retinitis Pigmentosa patients with partially preserved vision and 38 age- and gender-matched normally sighted controls to determine whether peripheral visual loss can lead to changes in gray matter volume. We found significant reductio

Consider the eye in preventive healthcare - ocular findings, intraocular pressure and Schirmer tear test in ageing cats.

OBJECTIVES: Geriatric health screening in cats is highly recommended. However, information about normal and abnormal findings is scarce, especially regarding the eyes of ageing cats. This prospective study examined the influence of the ageing process on vision and ocular structures in older cats. METHODS: A total of 209 cats (aged 9-24 years) underwent physical examination, vision assessment, slit lamp biomicroscopy and ophthalmoscopy. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) measurement, Schirmer tear test (STT) reading and rebound tonometry were performed. Systemic disease was not a criterion for excl

[Optogenetic reactivation of dormant cone photoreceptors].

Optogenetics enable the restoration of light sensitivity in various retinal cell types. In degenerated retinas, dormant cones whose cell bodies are intact but no longer respond to light can be optogenetically reactivated. This restores all cone-dependent signalling pathways. In RP mouse models the hyperpolarizing opsins eNpHR and Jaws led to the optogenetic reactivation of dormant photoreceptors, with measurable light responses. This was accompanied by improvements in behavioral tests. The transplantation of optogenetically modified photoreceptors also shows functional integration into the ret

Bilateral keratomalacia years after biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch surgery: A case of severe vitamin A deficiency and literature review.

Vitamin A deficiency is an uncommon but serious complication of malabsorptive bariatric surgery in developed nations, which can manifest several years after the procedure. It can easily be overlooked, as patients often present with nonspecific signs and symptoms early in the disease course, and ocular manifestations typically appear once the deficiency reaches a severe stage. A female patient in her early 40s presented with acute vision loss 8 years after undergoing biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch bariatric surgery. Ophthalmic examination revealed Bitot's spots and progressive k

Bilateral Idiopathic Neuroretinitis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Neuroretinitis (NR) is a rare inflammatory condition characterized by sudden vision loss, optic disc edema and macular star appearance predominantly affecting individuals in their third and fourth decades of life. METHODS: This paper describes the case of 33-year-old Caucasian man with no significant medical history complaining of decreased vision for about a week. RESULTS: The ophthalmological exam revealed best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for the right eye (RE) of 0.8 (decimal notation) and of 0.9 for the left eye (LE). Intraocular pressure (IOP) was 20 mmHg in RE

Transmission-Based Vertebrae Strength Probe Development: Far Field Probe Property Extraction and Integrated Machine Vision Distance Validation Experiments.

We are developing a transmission-based probe for point-of-care assessment of vertebrae strength needed for fabricating the instrumentation used in supporting the spinal column during spinal fusion surgery. The device is based on a transmission probe whereby thin coaxial probes are inserted into the small canals through the pedicles and into the vertebrae, and a broad band signal is transmitted from one probe to the other across the bone tissue. Simultaneously, a machine vision scheme has been developed to measure the separation distance between the probe tips while they are inserted into the v

Acute Optic Neuritis: An Update on Approach and Management.

This review discusses the physical examination and diagnostic tests necessary to diagnose optic neuritis (ON) and provides an update on the approach and management of acute ON. A comprehensive search of the PubMed database was conducted, limited to English-language journals and recent publications. A total of 160 articles were initially screened by title, of which 73 articles were included in the narrative synthesis. ON is an inflammation of the optic nerve that can be caused by different systemic and neurological disorders. It is commonly presented as a subacute unilateral painful vision loss

Recurrent Optic Neuritis in Paediatric Anti-N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor (Anti-NMDAR) Encephalitis: Case Report and Literature Review.

Optic neuritis associated with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis poses a novel challenge and is recognised as being part of overlapping antibody-associated demyelinating syndromes. We report a case of a 10-year-old girl who first presented with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and later developed four episodes of left optic neuritis. Blurring of vision, pain on eye movement, and headache were the striking features in all episodes of optic neuritis. For each recurrent episode of optic neuritis she was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone, following which visual acuity, colou

Bilateral Optic Perineuritis in Tuberculosis-Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome.

Optic perineuritis (OPN) in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients while on anti-tuberculous treatment is rare. It may occur due to tuberculosis-immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS). Visual prognosis is poor if not treated early. We report a rare case of bilateral OPN in an elderly patient on treatment for PTB. A 79-year-old Malay man presented with a painless bilateral blurring of vision for three weeks. He was diagnosed to have PTB and has been on anti-tuberculous treatment for five months. Visual acuity in both eyes was only counting fingers. Optic nerve function tests were

Diagnosis and clinical features of common optic neuropathies.

Disorders of the optic nerves (optic neuropathies) are some of the most common causes of visual loss, and can present in isolation or with associated neurological or systemic symptoms and signs. Several optic neuropathies-especially inflammatory optic neuropathies-are associated with neurological disorders and thus are often diagnosed and treated by neurologists. The mechanisms underlying optic neuropathies are diverse and typically manifest with decreased visual acuity, altered colour vision, and abnormal visual field in the affected eye. Diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical history and

An unusual case of optic neuritis.

Optic neuritis is a frequent disease with well established tests and therapeutic strategies. However, possible differential diagnoses cover a broad spectrum. Therefore, clinical work-up can be challenging and routine testing and therapies may not be sufficient. In this case, a 26 year old female is described who presented with clinical features of optic neuritis, yet failed to respond to common therapeutic strategies and lost vision on the affected eye. Diagnostic nerve transection was performed, histopathology suggested inflammation. As the second nerve became affected, immunosuppressive ther

[Bilateral panuveitis with papillary swelling].

Lues (syphilis) is a chronic cyclic infectious disease which can continue for decades if untreated. A simultaneous HIV infection can result in false negative results in serological tests for lues. The occurrence of neurolues has frequently been described in HIV positive patients. In the differential diagnosis an early ocular manifestion of lues should be considered. A 40-year-old homosexual patient presented in our hospital with bilateral pain-free increasing loss of vision. The ophthalmological examination revealed an intermediately expressed panuveitis with streaky opacity of the vitreous bo

Two differing presentations of optic nerve head drusen.

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve head drusen was recognized histologically in 1858 by Heinrich Muller The majority of optic nerve head drusen cases have been benign in nature. However, optic nerve head drusen can be visually devastating. CASE REPORTS: Two patients were diagnosed with optic nerve head drusen. They were similar in age and each had a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 OU. Although the diagnosis was the same, the disease affected each person very differently. One is currently asymptomatic; the other is legally blind secondary to severely constricted visual fields. These cases demonstra

[Solar retinopathy. Rare cause of acute loss of vision].

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 15-year-old girl was admitted to hospital for acute bilateral visual deterioration and central scotoma of two days' duration. It became known on the third day that she had looked into the sun on several occasions, for several minutes at a time. INVESTIGATIONS: In addition to the scotoma there was a visual loss to 0.05 in the right and 0.1 in the left eye. Neurological examination and imaging of the head were unremarkable. At first the visual evoked potential was prolonged (122 ms on right, 130 ms on left), but all other electrophysiological tests were normal.
