Long-term durability of minimal invasive posterior transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion: a clinical and radiographic follow-up.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Both open and minimally invasive lumbar fusion surgeries (MIS) are used to treat patients with symptomatic degenerative spinal pathologies. Open lumbar fusion surgery studies have reported excellent short-term safety and long-term clinical outcomes. MIS has shown excellent safety and short-term clinical success, but there is very little information on its long-term clinical durability. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to document the long-term clinical durability and safety of patients treated with minimally invasive surgery--transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (M

The effects of mesencephalic neural crest cell extirpation on the development of chicken embryos.

The mesencephalic neural crest cells of Hamburger-Hamilton Stage 9-Stage 11 chick embryos were surgically extirpated unilaterally in 148 embryos and bilaterally in 8 embryos. Sham operations were performed unilaterally on 16 control embryos and bilaterally on one control embryo. Embryos were fixed at various time intervals after operation, studied macroscopically, and by light and scanning electron microscopy, and their development compared with that of 47 normal embryos. The extirpated mesencephalic region was repopulated by crest cells within 6-8 hours after operation. These 'new' crest cell

Socioeconomic and Demographic Influences on Trigger Finger Management: A Retrospective Cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical disparities often stem from social determinants beyond underlying pathology. This study aims to examine how race, socio … icare or without insurance were less likely to undergo surgery than those with private insurance or workers' compensation (11.6% vs 17%). Education level, sex, primary language, body mass index, and comorbidities were not independently associated with surgical treatment. CONCLUSION: Although trigger finger management is typically streamlined, age, race, and insurance …

[Antibiotic use for prophylaxis and empirical therapy of fracture-related infections in Germany : A survey of 44 hospitals].

BACKGROUND: Antibiotics play an important role in the prophylaxis and treatment of infections in orthopedic trauma surgery; however, there seems to be remarkable differences in the clinical antibiotic practice between hospitals, particularly for open fractures and for the empirical therapy of fracture-related infections (FRI). METHODS: Therefore, we intended to evaluate the current clinical praxis in university and workers' compensation hospitals in Germany with a questionnaire on prophylaxis and empirical treatment of FRI. The results were compared with the resistance profile of 86 FRI patie…

Poorer Preoperative Function Leads to Delayed Return to Work After Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy.

BackgroundThe factors that affect return to work (RTW) after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) remain unclear, especially in a non-Workers' Compensation setting. We aimed to (1) identify factors that influence RTW in patients undergoing ACDF (2) determine if early RTW plays a role in functional outcomes, quality of life, and satisfaction.MethodsProspectively collected data of 103 working adults who underwent primary ACDF for DCM were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were stratified into 2 groups: early RTW (≤60 days, n = 42) and late RT…

How physicians allocate causation: a scenario study with factorial design.

BACKGROUND: Causation is a complex concept but important in suspected work-related disease. Physicians routinely make initial assessments of causation as part of their work, but the factors contributing to these assessments are not well understood. AIMS: To determine which factors influence a family physician's assessment of causation when seeing patients with suspected work-related injury or illness. METHODS: Four groups of family physicians with differing levels of prior reporting (zero, low, medium, high) to the Workers Compensation Board received a questionnaire including four randomly a

Byssinosis among winders in the cotton industry.

In a mill spinning coarse cotton the prevalence of byssinosis and other respiratory symptoms, and the F.E.V.1·0, were measured in a group of 29 men and 117 women employed in the winding room. All the men and 95% of the women at risk were included. Dust concentrations, measured with a modified Hexhlet at various work points in the winding room, ranged from 1·65 to 6·05 mg./m.3 total dust. These concentrations are higher than 1·0 mg./m.3, which is the threshold limit value for cotton dust recommended by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The mean dust concentration wa

Prognostic factors for treatment success of conservative management and role for physiotherapy in radicular pain caused by a lumbar disc herniation: a systematic review.

IntroductionLumbar disc herniation is a frequent cause of radicular leg pain and has a pronounced impact on the quality of life. While guidelines discommend surgery in the acute phase of the condition, literature on conservative treatment is relatively scarce. In this systematic review, prognostic factors for success of conservative management are investigated as well as the effect of physiotherapy on leg pain.MethodsWe searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Pedro, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, ICTRP, and Clinicaltrials.gov from commencement to Sep
