Blood transfusion is mainly bound to immunological and infectious risks. The immunological risk originates from an incompatibility between the blood of the donor and that of the recipient; this risk remains insufficiently assessed. A multicentre study has been carried out by the French Blood Transfusion Society and the National Institute for Blood Transfusion. Sixty-one accidents due to an erythrocyte incompatibility were found: 26 cases with ABO incompatibility, and 35 cases with alloantibodies of other blood group systems. For the former category of accidents, the most frequent cause was due

Massive immune hemolysis due to passenger lymphocyte-derived anti-D has not been reported in renal transplantation. A 50-year-old (B-positive) male received a dual deceased-donor kidney transplant (B-negative) for diabetic renal failure. Two weeks post-transplant, the patient developed severe hemolytic anemia. The donor anti-D titer was 1:8. The recipient anti-D titer (zero pre-transplant) increased from 1:4 to 1:16 over 4 days. Rapid hemolysis caused severe anemia, minimum Hb = 4.2 g/dL, while selectively lysing the patient's autologous red cells during this time. The hemolytic anemia did not

BACKGROUND: Understanding the ABO and RhD blood group systems is important for safe blood transfusions and preventing hemolytic transfusion reactions caused by incompatible blood types. This study compared the phenotypes and calculated genotypes of ABO and RhD blood group systems among students from Cuttington University (CU), Liberia, and the University of Narowal (UON), Pakistan.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 1017 participants (517 from CU and 500 from UON). Capillary blood samples were collected and analyzed using standard antigen-antibody agglutination test kits. Phen

Bombay blood group is a rare type that was initially identified in the city of Bombay, India. It is characterized by the presence of serum antibodies anti-A, anti-B, and anti-H, which can cause agglutination in all blood groups within the ABO system. The clinical importance of the Bombay blood group lies in its inability to receive transfusions from other blood groups. In this case report, we present a case of a young male who was initially misdiagnosed as having an O phenotype, resulting in a hemolytic transfusion reaction. This case highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associ

A prospective study was carried out on 101 neonates with jaundice due to ABO incompatibility. The direct Coomb's test was weakly positive in 4 cases. The indirect Coomb's test using the eluate was positive in 8 cases. In the maternal blood either IgG anti-A or anti-B haemolysin was present in high titre in every case. Phototherapy was given when the indirect serum bilirubin level exceeded 9 mg/dl. Exchange transfusion was done-in 39 cases, 9 babies requiring multiple exchanges. There were 2 deaths.

BACKGROUND: Group AB plasma, which lacks anti-A and anti-B isohemagglutinins, is issued for emergency transfusion when a patient's ABO group is unknown, but the relative scarcity of group AB blood donors limits its availability. We sought to establish a thawed plasma inventory to improve the rapid availability of plasma in the emergency release setting but were concerned about potential wastage of group AB plasma.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Recognizing that plasma-incompatible apheresis platelets are routinely transfused and only rarely result in hemolytic reactions if the donor is blood group

To evaluate the yield of the blood cell separator for collection of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) from ABO major and (or) minor incompatible allogeneic donors and the feasibility of PBSC component infusion to the recipients without removal of erythrocytes or plasma, the Cobe Spectra (Version 6.1) blood cell separator was utilized to collect PBSC component from 9 allogeneic donors. Of all the donors, 4 were ABO major incompatible, 2 were minor incompatible and the other 3 were both major and minor incompatible to corresponding recipients. In each cycle, different amount of PBSC component w

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: There is paucity of information on the association between Plasmodium falciparum malaria and some human genetic markers in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Hence, a study was undertaken in children to assess the current level of subclinical malaria due to P. falciparum.
METHODS: Blood groups ABO and Rhesus factor, haemoglobin electrophoretic pattern, G-6-PD deficiency status and malaria were determined among 240 apparently healthy children in a crosssectional descriptive study using standard procedures.
RESULTS: The prevalence of P. falciparum malaria in this regio

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of alloimmunization to RBC antigens in sickle cell patients was analyzed by a retrospective review of the records of pediatric and adult sickle cell patients who received transfusions and who were followed over a 10-year period.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Charts of pediatric and adult sickle cell patients followed at Schneider Children's Hospital (SCH) and Long Island Jewish Medical Center between 1989 and 1999 were retrieved. Patients followed at SCH were classified as pediatric, regardless of age. Data on transfusion history, alloimmunization, and transf

Pre-transplantation red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) is a well-recognized cause of allosensitization. However, the effects of RBCT after kidney transplantation remain controversial. This study evaluates the impacts of RBCT within the first 30 days post-transplantation (early RBCT) with regard to long-term patient and graft outcomes. We retrospectively analyzed 785 patients who underwent HLA- and ABO-compatible kidney transplantation between 2014 and 2020. Patients were categorized based on whether they received early RBCT. Overall, 18.9% of patients received early RBCT. On multivariable analy

Bombay blood (hh blood) is a rare blood group (4 per million), with no expression of the H antigen present in blood group O. Bombay blood patients can only receive Bombay blood, with autodonation used for elective surgery. We present a Bombay patient (haemoglobin 12.1 g/dL) who needed urgent coronary artery bypass graft surgery. In order to try and avoid transfusion, we used a multidisciplinary approach as well as the use of 'no swabs' (swab/gauze/sponge), until cardiopulmonary bypass was established. This 'experiment' demonstrates that using fewer swabs may be a simple reproducible action tha

BACKGROUND: The ABO blood system has been involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases, including coagulopathy and bleeding complications. In trauma patients, blood type A has been associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome, and recently, blood type O has been associated with all-cause mortality. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between ABO blood types and long-term functional outcomes in critically ill patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).
METHODS: We conducted a single-center, retrospective, observational study including all patients admitted

Until the present time, whole-organ hepatic homotransplantation has been a disappointing procedure, both in experimental animals and in man. The operation itself carries a high immediate risk, especially in the dog, which is peculiarly subject to an anoxic hepatic injury termed “outflow block.” In reported canine experiments, the majority of animals have failed to recover from the acute effects of operation. Because of the fact that it has not been possible to obtain a consistently satisfactory preparation, evaluations of the efficacy of immunosuppressive regimens for the prevention of rejecti

IntroductionABO groups impact macroangiopathy risk in T2D. It is unknown whether such modulation extends to microvascular complications.MethodSingle-centre cross-sectional study including 1,006 T2D patients.ResultsPrevalence of overall microangiopathy was 51%. No significant differences (ANOVA) were observed between ABO groups in terms of age, sex, diabetes duration, BMI, hypertension, chronic kidney disease or diabetic foot. Insulin sensitivity and the hyperbolic HOMA product [BxS] were lower among non-O groups (-20% and -14%, respectively; p 0.001 and 0.013), while HbA1c and lifetime hypergl

Survivors from meningococcal disease (serogroups B and C) and a control series (blood donors) were examined for their ability to secrete ABH blood group substance. The examination was done indirectly by determining their Lewis phenotypes. There was no significant difference in the secretor status between the two groups.
