Music can be reconstructed from human auditory cortex activity using nonlinear decoding models.

Music is core to human experience, yet the precise neural dynamics underlying music perception remain unknown. We analyzed a unique intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) dataset of 29 patients who listened to a Pink Floyd song and applied a stimulus reconstruction approach previously used in the speech domain. We successfully reconstructed a recognizable song from direct neural recordings and quantified the impact of different factors on decoding accuracy. Combining encoding and decoding analyses, we found a right-hemisphere dominance for music perception with a primary role of the superi

Therapeutic effect of tempo in Mozart's "Sonata for two pianos" (K. 448) in patients with epilepsy: An electroencephalographic study.

BACKGROUND: Mozart's "Sonata for two pianos" (Köchel listing 448) has proven effective as music therapy for patients with epilepsy, but little is understood about the mechanism of which feature in it impacted therapeutic effect. This study explored whether tempo in that piece is important for its therapeutic effect. METHODS: We measured the effects of tempo in Mozart's sonata on clinical and electroencephalographic parameters of 147 patients with epilepsy who listened to the music at slow, original, or accelerated speed. As a control, patients listened to Haydn's Symphony no. 94 at original s

Evidence of Implicit and Explicit Motor Learning during Gait Training with Distorted Rhythmic Auditory Cues.

Gait training with rhythmic auditory cues contains motor learning mechanisms that are weighted more explicitly than implicitly. However, various clinical populations may benefit from a shift to gait training with greater implicit motor learning mechanisms. To investigate the ability to incorporate more implicit-weighted motor learning processes during rhythmic auditory cueing, we attempted to induce error-based recalibration using a subtly varying metronome cue for naïve unimpaired young adults. We assessed the extent of implicit and explicit retention after both an isochronous metronome and s

Development and validation of a computational method to predict unintended auditory brainstem response during transcranial ultrasound neuromodulation in mice.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is a promising noninvasive neuromodulation modality. The inadvertent and unpredictable activation of the auditory system in response to TUS obfuscates the interpretation of non-auditory neuromodulatory responses. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to develop and validate a computational metric to quantify the susceptibility to unintended auditory brainstem response (ABR) in mice premised on time frequency analyses of TUS signals and auditory sensitivity. METHODS: Ultrasound pulses with varying amplitudes, pulse repetition frequencies (PRFs), en

A Clinically Viable Medial Olivocochlear Reflex Assay Using Transient-Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions.

OBJECTIVES: The contralateral medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) strength may indicate various auditory conditions in humans, but a clinically viable assay and equipment are needed for quick, accurate, and reliable measurements. The first experiment compared an earlier version of the assay, which used a nonlinear-mode chirp stimulus, with a new assay using a linear-mode click stimulus, designed to give reliable MOCR measurements in most normal-hearing ears. The second experiment extended the improved assay on a purpose-built binaural hardware platform that used forward-pressure level (FPL) cal

Cochlear Implant Users can Effectively Combine Place and Timing Cues for Pitch Perception.

OBJECTIVES: The study objective was to characterize cochlear implant (CI) pitch perception for pure, complex, and modulated tones for frequencies and fundamental frequencies in the ecologically essential range between 110 and 440 Hz. Stimulus manipulations were used to examine CI users' reliance on stimulation place and rate cues for pitch discrimination. DESIGN: The study was a within-subjects design with 21 CI users completing pitch discrimination measures using pure, complex, and modulated tones. Stimulus manipulations were used to test whether CI users have better pitch discrimination for

Neural hyperactivity and altered envelope encoding in the central auditory system: Changes with advanced age and hearing loss.

Temporal modulations are ubiquitous features of sound signals that are important for auditory perception. The perception of temporal modulations, or temporal processing, is known to decline with aging and hearing loss and negatively impact auditory perception in general and speech recognition specifically. However, neurophysiological literature also provides evidence of exaggerated or enhanced encoding of specifically temporal envelopes in aging and hearing loss, which may arise from changes in inhibitory neurotransmission and neuronal hyperactivity. This review paper describes the physiologic

Dolphins reduce hearing sensitivity in anticipation of repetitive impulsive noise exposures.

The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) was continuously measured in two bottlenose dolphins during impulse noise exposures to determine whether observed head movements coincided with actual changes to auditory system sensitivity. Impulses were generated by a seismic air gun at a fixed inter-pulse interval of 10 s. ASSR amplitudes were extracted from the instantaneous electroencephalogram using coherent averaging within a sliding analysis window. A decline in ASSR amplitude was seen during the time interval between air gun impulses, followed by an elevation in ASSR amplitude immediately afte

Neural correlates of statistical learning in developmental dyslexia: An electroencephalography study.

The human brain extracts statistical regularities from the surrounding environment in a process called statistical learning. Behavioural evidence suggests that developmental dyslexia affects statistical learning. However, surprisingly few studies have assessed how developmental dyslexia affects the neural processing underlying this type of learning. We used electroencephalography to explore the neural correlates of an important aspect of statistical learning - sensitivity to transitional probabilities - in individuals with developmental dyslexia. Adults diagnosed with developmental dyslexia (n

Medial Olivocochlear Reflex Strength in Ears With Low-to-Moderate Annual Noise Exposure.

PURPOSE: Studies in lower mammals demonstrate enhancement of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) following noise exposure. A similar effect may occur in humans, and there is some evidence of an individual's acoustic history affecting the MOCR. The current work evaluates the relationship between an individual's annual noise exposure history and their MOCR strength. Given the potential role of the MOCR as a biological hearing protector, it is important to identify factors associated with MOCR strength. METHOD: Data were collected from 98 normal-hearing young adults. Annual noise exposure his

Audiovisual integration in children with cochlear implants revealed through EEG and fNIRS.

Sensory deprivation can offset the balance of audio versus visual information in multimodal processing. Such a phenomenon could persist for children born deaf, even after they receive cochlear implants (CIs), and could potentially explain why one modality is given priority over the other. Here, we recorded cortical responses to a single speaker uttering two syllables, presented in audio-only (A), visual-only (V), and audio-visual (AV) modes. Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) were successively recorded in seventy-five school-aged children. Twenty-fiv

Effects of Hearing Loss on Interaural Time Difference Sensitivity at Low and High Frequencies.

While many studies have reported a loss of sensitivity to interaural time differences (ITDs) carried in the fine structure of low-frequency signals for listeners with hearing loss, relatively few data are available on the perception of ITDs carried in the envelope of high-frequency signals in this population. The relevant studies found stronger effects of hearing loss at high frequencies than at low frequencies in most cases, but small subject numbers and several confounding effects prevented strong conclusions from being drawn. In the present study, we revisited this question while addressing

Acute effect of traditional and adaptive metronomes on gait variability in older individuals with a history of falls.

BACKGROUND: Metronome cueing has been shown to reduce gait variability and thereby potentially reduce falls risk in individuals with Parkinson's disease. It is unclear however, if metronome cueing has a similar effect in healthy older adults with a history of falls. AIM: To investigate whether a traditional and/or an adaptive metronome, based on an individual's gait pattern, were effective in reducing gait variability in older adults with a history of falls. METHODS: Twenty older adults (15 women, 71 ± 4.9 years) with a history of falls were included in this cross-over study. Participants re

Cross-species experiments reveal widespread cochlear neural damage in normal hearing.

Animal models suggest that cochlear afferent nerve endings may be more vulnerable than sensory hair cells to damage from acoustic overexposure and aging. Because neural degeneration without hair-cell loss cannot be detected in standard clinical audiometry, whether such damage occurs in humans is hotly debated. Here, we address this debate through co-ordinated experiments in at-risk humans and a wild-type chinchilla model. Cochlear neuropathy leads to large and sustained reductions of the wideband middle-ear muscle reflex in chinchillas. Analogously, human wideband reflex measures revealed dist

The sensitivity of bone conduction for dental implants.

Dental implants are connected to the alveolar bone by osseointegration. Dental implants could be used as a potential bone conduction (BC) hearing assistive device in the mouth. However, the BC threshold of dental implants has not been reported. The present study aimed to examine the pure tone auditory thresholds of normal human subjects to BC stimulation of the implants. Dental implants showed a significantly lower BC threshold than natural teeth and mastoids. Mandibular dental implants had BC sensitivity similar to that of maxillary dental implants. The BC threshold of anterior dental implant

Medial olivocochlear reflex reliability: The effects of averaging and presence of synchronized spontaneous otoacoustic emissions.

The medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR), usually assessed by the inhibition of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) with contralateral noise, is a very small effect. In understanding the origin of the MOCR, it is crucial to obtain data of the highest accuracy, i.e., with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which in turn largely depends on the number of signal averages. This study investigates how the reliability of MOCR measures is affected by the number of averages. At the same time, the effect of the presence of synchronized spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SSOAEs) is taken int

Contralateral inhibition of distortion product otoacoustic emissions in young noise-exposed Veterans.

Although animal models show a clear link between noise exposure and damage to afferent cochlear synapses, the relationship between noise exposure and efferent function appears to be more complex. Animal studies indicate that high intensity noise exposure reduces efferent medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex strength, whereas chronic moderate noise exposure is associated with a conditioning effect that enhances the MOC reflex. The MOC reflex is predicted to improve speech-in-noise perception and protects against noise-induced auditory damage by reducing cochlear gain. In humans, MOC reflex strengt

Metabolic changes in the brain and blood of rats following acoustic trauma, tinnitus and hyperacusis.

It has been increasingly recognized that tinnitus is likely to be generated by complex network changes. Acoustic trauma that causes tinnitus induces significant changes in multiple metabolic pathways in the brain. However, it is not clear whether those metabolic changes in the brain could also be reflected in blood samples and whether metabolic changes could discriminate acoustic trauma, hyperacusis and tinnitus. We analyzed brain and serum metabolic changes in rats following acoustic trauma or a sham procedure using metabolomics. Hearing levels were recorded before and after acoustic trauma a

Neural Correlates of Vocal Auditory Feedback Processing: Unique Insights from Electrocorticography Recordings in a Human Cochlear Implant User.

There is considerable interest in understanding cortical processing and the function of top-down and bottom-up human neural circuits that control speech production. Research efforts to investigate these circuits are aided by analysis of spectro-temporal response characteristics of neural activity recorded by electrocorticography (ECoG). Further, cortical processing may be altered in the case of hearing-impaired cochlear implant (CI) users, as electric excitation of the auditory nerve creates a markedly different neural code for speech compared with that of the functionally intact hearing syste
