Long-acting analgesics such as extended-release buprenorphine are desirable in rodent medicine because they reduce need for administration of additional medication and provide stable drug levels. We measured the serum concentrations of buprenorphine after topical administration of a long-acting transdermal buprenorphine (LAT-bup) solution to female C57BL/6 mice. Prurigo pigmentosa is a rare inflammatory cutaneous disorder associated with ketosis that resolves with reticulate hyperpigmentation. Infections with Geotrichum species, although rare, are sometimes seen in immunocompromised hosts. We report a case of oral geotrichosis in a patient seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus who had erythematous mandibular and maxillary gingiva but was otherwise free of any active systemic disease. Geotrichum candidum was shown by both culture and histopathology to be present in the lesion and was deduced to be the causative organism. The patient responded well to several weeks of treatment involving oral topical administration of nystatin vaginal tablets.

Five cases of centipede bites are reported. The patients showed erythema in response to swelling, and/or paresis around the sites. They had been bitten by Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans Koch or Scolopendra subspinipes multidens Newport. There was no species-specific reaction to the bite, so the variety of reactions seen was thought to be due to patients' individual differences. Treatment included local anesthesia, systemic and/or topical corticosteroids, and administration of a biscoclaurin alkaloid, as needed according to the severity of the lesions.

Topical administration of 0.5% vanadate lowers intraocular pressure in monkey and rabbit eyes. This appears to be a consequence of a reduction in the rate of aqueous humor secretion, probably resulting from the inhibition of ciliary epithelium membrane. NaK ATPase. The ubiquitous vanadate and its interactions with catecholamines and ascorbate may play a role in regulating the sodium pump of the ciliary epithelium. Adrenergic blocking agents may also lower intraocular pressure by inhibiting the NaK ATPase of the ciliary epithelium.

A male infant, born to parents in a non-consanguineous marriage presented with a 1-month history of itchy, fluid-filled lesions in a string-of-pearl appearance all over the body following administration of the first dose of pentavalent vaccination. The results of the immunological tests confirmed the diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid. He was treated with topical and oral corticosteroids along with oral dapsone, followed by good improvement. The child received subsequent doses of the vaccine without any further relapses.

We report a 23-month old girl who presented with bilateral epiphora who underwent bilateral lacrimal probing and syringing, during which a cocaine adrenaline solution was used. Two hours after the procedure she developed acute pulmonary oedema secondary to myocardial ischaemia. The patient was treated with intravenous glyceryltrinitrate and milrinone infusions; cardiac enzymes and left ventricular function normalised over the subsequent 72 hours. Topical administration of cocaine and adrenaline solution may have dangerous systemic cardiac effects and should always be used judiciously.

We report a case of a 19 month old boy that presented with acneform eruption on his cheeks since birth. This condition was left untreated until the age of one. At that time the lesions developed into inflammatory nodules that resolved after topical treatment (Aknemycin fluid, cynober-sulfer pastae) and remission exist during 6 months. The effects of epinephrine on the permeability of the blood-aqueous barrier, stimulated by paracentesis of the anterior chamber, were studied in rabbits following alpha-adrenergic blocking by means of topical or systemic thymoxamine. The alpha-adrenergic block was tested by continuous recording of the systemic arterial blood pressure. The reversal of the vascular effects of epinephrine after administration of thymoxamine was demonstrated at the bloodaqueous barrier. The miotic property of thymoxamine is believed to have had no influence on our results.
