In-Person and Virtual Adaptation of an Interprofessional Palliative Care Communications Skills Training Course for Pediatric Oncology Clinicians.

INTRODUCTION: Empathic communication is crucial for clinicians when discussing palliative and end-of-life (PC/EOL) care with parents of children with cancer. Unfortunately, many parents report inadequate communication at these distressing times. This study evaluates the communication skills training (CST) clinicians received to deliver a PC/EOL communication intervention as part of a multi-site randomized-controlled trial (RCT). Training was provided using an in-person format and then adapted to a virtual platform to accommodate remote learners. METHODS: Clinicians were trained in dyads (one

Exploring awareness, perceptions, and practices relating to nutritional status and low muscle mass in patients with ovarian cancer.

PURPOSE: Women with ovarian cancer are at high risk of malnutrition and muscle loss due to advanced-stage diagnosis and treatment toxicities. Evidence-based guidelines recommend screening for malnutrition and sarcopenia to prevent associated adverse consequences, including reduced survival. This study aimed to describe awareness and perceptions of nutrition-related issues and practices in ovarian cancer among Australian healthcare professionals. METHODS: A national survey was completed between November 2023 and March 2024. The 24-item survey evaluated awareness and perceptions of nutrition-re

The implementation of a pectus bar insertion enhanced recovery after surgery pathway: A quality improvement initiative.

BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum repair is associated with significant discomfort, and pain is a primary contributor to postoperative hospital length of stay. Recent advances in postoperative pain control include the use of intercostal cryoablation techniques that may now make it possible to discharge patients on the day of surgery. Unnecessary variation in patient care and noncompliance with care bundles may be a factor in extended length of stay. The global aim of this quality improvement initiative was to successfully implement an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway on patients under

BLS competency of doctors and nurses serving during the war in Gaza: insights from a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Basic Life Support (BLS) is a standard of care and a crucial component of emergency medicine. In conflict-affected regions like Gaza, the importance of timely and effective BLS is ever more critical. However, the level of BLS knowledge among Gazan healthcare workers remains underexplored. Understanding current competency levels is vital for improving patient outcomes, guiding training programs, and enhancing emergency preparedness in this high-risk environment. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey conducted in November 2024 recruited 402 doctors and nurses from six main governmental

Characteristics Associated with Spirometry Guideline Adherence in VA Patients Hospitalized with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

BACKGROUND: The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) recommends at least annual spirometry for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Since spirometry acquisition is variable in clinical practice, identifying characteristics associated with annual spirometry may inform strategies to improve care for patients with COPD. METHODS: We included veterans hospitalized for COPD at Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities from 10/2012 to 09/2015. Our primary outcome was spirometry within 1 year of COPD hospitalization. Patient demographics, health f

How do we counsel patients on short- and long-term complications after hypospadias repair? - A survey study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias correction remains one of the most performed pediatric urologic procedures, affecting up to 1/150 males born in the United States. Current studies suggest that surgical counseling has a significant impact on shared decision making, decisional regret, and long-term follow-up. However, no set paradigm currently exists for long-term follow-up or counseling. We sought to obtain consensus from established pediatric urologists the optimal content and potential short, intermediate, and long-term complications to be considered when counseling patients and parents of patients

Closing Hypertension Equity Gaps Through Digitally Inclusive Remote Patient Monitoring.

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) has been shown to support adults with treated but uncontrolled hypertension (HTN) outside the clinic setting, yielding significant benefits in the treatment and control of blood pressure (BP). Despite its proven efficacy and recommendation as guideline-concordant care, adoption of RPM is suboptimal, particularly among marginalized populations, who face structural barriers to HTN control. A barrier to equitable adoption among marginalized populations is the lack of digital inclusivity in the design and deployment of RPM. Digitally inclusive tools consider factors

Nonpharmacological Interventions for Pain Relief During Peripheral Venous Cannulation: Implications for Practice.

Background: Peripheral venous cannulation is one of the most common clinical procedures, yet it often causes significant pain, anxiety, and discomfort for patients. While pharmacological methods exist, non-pharmacological interventions offer a low-cost, low-risk alternative that eliminates waiting times for anesthetic onset. The aim of this review is to synthesize the various nonpharmacological interventions for procedural pain reduction during PIVC in adults, covering interventions ranging from psychological distraction to advanced procedural support technologies. Methods: A systematic review

Management and referral for high-risk conditions and complications during the antenatal period: knowledge, practice and attitude survey of providers in rural public healthcare in two states of India.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate antenatal care improves pregnancy outcomes. Routine antenatal care is provided at primary care facilities in rural India and women at-risk of poor outcomes are referred to advanced centres in cities. The primary care facilities include Sub-health centres, Primary health centres, and Community health centres, in ascending order of level of obstetric care provided. The latter two should provide basic and comprehensive obstetric care, respectively, but they provide only partial services. In such scenario, the management and referrals during pregnancy are less understood. T

Acupuncture for symptomatic rotator cuff disease: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff disease (RCD) consists of subacromial impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tendinopathy or tendinitis, partial or full rotator cuff tear, calcific tendinitis, and subacromial bursitis. Acupuncture has been suggested as a meaningful nonsurgical intervention for managing shoulder pain and dysfunction. However, previous reviews have not completely addressed the role of acupuncture in the management of RCDs. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for managing symptoms in patients with RCD. METHODS: We will search t

Best evidence summary for the prevention of intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: With continuous advances in neonatal intensive care, the survival of preterm infants has improved substantially. However, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) remains one of the most serious complications of prematurity and is associated with death and long-term neurodevelopmental impairment. A growing body of evidence suggests that timely preventive interventions can reduce the incidence and severity of IVH. This study aimed to systematically retrieve, appraise, and synthesize the best available evidence on IVH prevention in preterm infants, so as to provide practical references for

Study protocol: Type III hybrid effectiveness-implementation study implementing Age-Friendly evidence-based practices in the VA to improve outcomes in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Unmet care needs among older adults accelerate cognitive and functional decline and increase medical harms, leading to poorer quality of life, more frequent hospitalizations, and premature nursing home admission. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is invested in becoming an "Age-Friendly Health System" to better address four tenets associated with reduced harm and improved outcomes among the 4 million Veterans aged 65 and over receiving VA care. These four tenets focus on "4Ms" that are fundamental to the care of older adults, including (1) what Matters (ensuring that care is

Practices and perspectives on dying at home in Norwegian home care services - a secondary analysis of qualitative data.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing recognition that individuals of all ages with life-limiting conditions benefit from palliative care. Despite a preference for dying at home, most patients still spend their final days in hospital. The WHO encourages member states to integrate palliative care across all levels of their health system. AIM: This study aims to explore how home care services in a Norwegian municipality implement practices that enable patients to die at home, and how healthcare professionals experience these practices. METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted using qualitative da

Prescript peritoneal dialysis: Patterns of iron prescribing in peritoneal dialysis.

BackgroundIron deficiency and anaemia are prevalent in people undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), necessitating effective iron supplementation. While oral iron is often preferred for its accessibility and cost, it may be insufficient or poorly tolerated. Intravenous (IV) iron is generally well tolerated and associated with improved haemoglobin response and reduced erythropoiesis-stimulating agent requirements, yet optimal dosing, administration intervals, and haematological targets remain under-researched, particularly in PD populations. Current prescribing practices vary significantly, refle
