A 42-year-old man had unilateral Marcus Gunn pupil and bilaterally dilated episcleral vessels. After several weeks of testing, using computed tomographic (CT) scanning and angiography, the diagnosis of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the brain was made. Except for the partial optic atrophy in the left eye, fundi were normal, with few of the neurologic and systemic manifestations reported previously. To my knowledge, this is the first documented case of an AVM of the brain with no evidence of an arteriovenous shunt, but with an afferent pupillary defect instead.

The anterograde horseradish peroxidase method was used to determine if prenatal exposure to ethanol affected the development of the characteristic afferent lamination pattern of the commissural projection to the dentate gyrus. Mean ethanol consumption for the ethanol-consuming dams was 12.7 g/kg +/- 0.3 g per day. Adult offspring of rats that consumed a liquid diet containing 35% ethanol-derived calories during days 1-21 of gestation, and both pair-fed and normal controls were examined. Brain weights and volumes of the ethanol and pair-fed control rats did not differ significantly from normal

The role of slowly adapting pulmonary stretch receptors (PSR) in the reflex control of expiratory duration was investigated in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing rabbits. Graded resistive and elastic loads were applied for single expirations to produce expiratory volume-time curves. The PSR were selectively blocked by administration of 200-400 ppm sulfur dioxide (SO2) to the inspired air of the rabbits. Volume-time curves were generated for pre-treatment, SO2 exposure, recovery and post-bilateral cervical vagotomy. SO2 exposure significantly reduced the volume-dependent modulation of expira

In anesthetized cats recordings were made from hypothalamo-neurohypophysial neurons in a supraoptic nucleus (SON) of the hypothalamus. The region of the nucleus tractus solitarius in the medulla, identified electrophysiologically as the site of termination of the first relay neurons of the sinus and aortic nerves, was stimulated with single or short trains of pulses (2-3 at 200 Hz). Out of 133 SON neurons 67 were affected by such stimuli. In 14 cells (21% of 'responsive' neurons) the stimulus produced profound inhibition of SON neuron activity after a latency of 10-30 msec. In another 8 neuron

Following horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injections in the superior, in the Deiters', in the medial, and in the descending vestibular nuclei in the hen, labeled cells are found in lateral longitudinal zones in the ipsilateral cerebellar cortex, most numerously in the anterior lobe, the nodulus, the uvula, and the auricle. Furthermore, labeled cells are found bilaterally in the ventral parts of the medial and intermediate cerebellar nuclei. Lesions in the cerebellar cortex of the anterior lobe and in anterior parts of the posterior lobe result in terminal degeneration, mainly in the nucleus Deite

1. Records have been made from area 4 of the cerebral cortex in five conscious monkeys. The properties of 216 neurones responsive to natural stimulation of the hand and fingers have been investigated.2. 46% of these neurones responded only to cutaneous stimulation (especially light brushing across the glabrous skin) and a further 38% responded only to movement of the digits. 4% responded to brief prods of the hand. 12% of the sample responded to more than one stimulus modality.3. Many hand-input neurones, including pyramidal tract neurones, responded at short-latency (8-15 msec) to light mecha

Epidural evoked potential recordings were performed in four macaque monkeys on peripheral nerve stimulation, before and after spinal transection, to evaluate whether the Schiff-Sherrington phenomenon could be demonstrated in this manner. No change in evoked potentials from upper extremity stimulation was seen after mid-thoracic spinal cord transection.

We tested the hypothesis that structural lesions of the central nervous system (CNS) associated with cervical dystonia more commonly involve the cerebellum and its primary afferent pathways than basal ganglia structures. Cervical dystonia is the most common focal dystonia, the majority of cases are idiopathic, and only a small percentage of patients have a family history of dystonia or other movement disorders. Pathophysiological mechanisms operative in solely or predominantly appendicular dystonias such as writer's cramp and Oppenheim's dystonia, respectively, may not be directly applicable t…

Odorant signal processing takes place in a diverse group of primary olfactory areas which receive direct input from the olfactory bulb. Orbitofrontal cortices participate in olfactory functions, but the pathways through which they receive olfactory or other input have not been clearly defined. The retrograde tracers horseradish peroxidase and fluorescent dyes were injected in orbital cortices to study their afferent cortical connections. Labeled neurons in primary olfactory areas (prepiriform cortex, anterior olfactory nucleus and olfactory tubercle) were directed mainly to a posterior orbitof

Individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) experience impairments in the control of head and neck movements, suggesting dysfunction in brain stem circuitry. To examine if brain stem circuitry is altered in CP, we compared reflexes evoked in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle by trigeminal nerve stimulation in adults with CP and in age/sex-matched controls. Increasing the intensity of trigeminal nerve stimulation produced progressive increases in the long-latency suppression of ongoing SCM electromyography in controls. In contrast, participants with CP showed progressively increased facilitation ar

By the comparison of nerve action potentials and cerebral potentials evoked by the same electrical stimulus the propagation of the somaesthetic impulse to the cerebral cortex can be evaluated. This technique was applied to the fibres of the sural nerve in normal subjects and in patients presenting various lesions of the peripheral and central nervous system. Evoked cerebral potential afforded valuable data when it was not possible to record the nerve action potentials or when the lesion involved the central segment of the afferent pathway.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a genetic disorder with varying degrees of neurological impairment. It is often associated with ocular involvement.
CASE REPORT: We present a child diagnosed with AS who had a deletion on the short arm of chromosome 15. The child seemed to be happy, with developmental delay, speech problem, and altering strabismus. To assess the potential presence and degree of damage in the visual pathway, we recorded monocular flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs). Our results revealed the presence of severe central afferent dysfunction in both optical pathways.

We report a case of a latissimus dorsi muscle strain that presented as a recurrence of chronic abdominal pain. One explanation of the referral of acute pain to a site of chronic pain is the convergence-projection theory, which hypothesizes that pain signals of visceral and somatic origin converge at some point in the sensory pathway. Upon reaching the cortex, these signals are interpreted as coming from the afferents which have previously excited this pathway. In this case an extensive gastrointestinal diagnostic evaluation was pursued unsuccessfully before the latissimus dorsi muscle strain w

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition characterized by pain during joint movement. Additionally, patients with advanced disease experience pain at rest (ie, ongoing pain) that is generally resistant to nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. Injection of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) into the intraarticular space of the rodent knee is a well-established model of OA that elicits weight-bearing asymmetry and referred tactile and thermal hypersensitivity. Whether ongoing pain is present in this model is unknown. Additionally, the possible relationship of ongoing pain to MIA dose is not known. MI

The painful sensation during acute myocardial ischemia or infarction is a common symptom and results from neural activity in humans. Little is known about the role of neuropeptides in this effect of myocardial ischemia. The aim of the current study was to investigate the role of substance P in mediating the noxious neural signals in spinal cord in acute myocardial ischemia by exploring the change in substance P and its mRNA in thoracic dorsal root ganglia and spinal dorsal horn (T1-T5) after coronary artery occlusion. The experiment was performed with immunohistochemistry, enzyme immunoassay a

Pain referral and spread in headache patients may be attributed to a sensitization of central nociceptive neurons with an increased excitability to afferent input. We investigated if noxious dural stimulation evokes sensitization of second-order neurons that leads to an increased responsiveness to stimulation of cervical afferents. Recordings were made from 29 nociceptive neurons in the C2 dorsal horn of the rat that received convergent synaptic input from trigeminal and cervical afferents. Trigeminal afferents of the supratentorial dura mater were activated by mustard oil (MO) and the respons

Brain-viscera communication is crucial for regulating mental health, with the vagus nerve being a key structure mediating this interaction. Clinically, artificial vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is used to treat various neuropsychiatric disorders, highlighting the importance of vagal afferent fibers in emotion regulation. The nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) is a brainstem structure proposed to receive signals from vagal afferents and relay them to brain networks for emotion regulation. However, due to the anatomical complexity and difficulty in accessing the deep-brain NTS region in vivo, its un

The following experiments were done to determine whether changes in baroreflex sensitivity evoked by cervical vagus nerve stimulation are due to sympathoexcitation mediated by the parabrachial nucleus. The relative contribution of cardiopulmonary and general gastric afferents within the cervical vagus nerve to the depression in baroreflex sensitivity are also investigated. Male Sprague-Dawley rats anesthetized with thiobutabarbital sodium (50 mg/kg) were instrumented to measure blood pressure and heart rate or for the continuous monitoring of renal sympathetic nerve activity. Baroreflex sensit
