Urine collection by sodium alginate/CMC composite self-calibrating aerogel SERS platform for accurate screening and staging of chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD), characterized by structural or functional renal abnormalities, poses substantial health risks. With a global prevalence nearing 13 %, fewer than 10 % of affected individuals are aware of their condition. Early-stage CKD frequently goes undetected due to the lack of specific symptoms and the high costs and logistical challenges associated with traditional blood testing. This study introduces an anionic, ultrasensitive aerogel SERS platform (CS-Ag@4-mbn), constructed from sodium alginate and carboxymethyl cellulose, optimized for efficient biomarker capture and rapi

Facile fabrication of functional xerogel membranes from sodium alginate-chitosan microfibers with low crystallinity through one-step solvent-exchange.

Biomass xerogels with porous structures fabricated in ambient conditions possess great advantages including scalability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, thus have shown demonstrated potential in various fields. However, disadvantages such as poor moisture resistance, poor mechanical properties, and low production efficiency challenge their practical applications. In this study, microfibers self-assembled from sodium alginate and chitosan are adopted to facilely fabricate biomass porous xerogel membranes with a fast one-step solvent-exchange, which is achieved due to the low crystallini

Chitosan/sodium alginate aerogels showing effective adsorption of anionic Congo Red and cationic Methylene Blue dyes for sustainable water treatment.

Water pollution caused by organic dyes poses a significant environmental concern. To address this issue, chitosan (Ch)-sodium alginate (SA) aerogels were synthesized using a straightforward method and evaluated as bio-based adsorbents for model dyes. Three formulations were prepared by varying the Ch-to-SA weight ratios: Ch-25-SA-75, Ch-50-SA-50, and Ch-75-SA-25. The aerogels displayed remarkable structural stability, retaining over 80 % of their mass after 24 h of immersion in solutions with pH values ranging from 4 to 11. The adsorption performance was evaluated for anionic Congo Red (CR) an

Core-shell Ca-alginate beads formed via inverse-gelation technique for the enhanced removal of lead(II) from aqueous solution.

Calcium-alginate (Ca-alginate) beads immobilizing various functional materials have demonstrated excellent Pb(II) adsorption in wastewater systems. Nonetheless, the immobilization mostly involves an external gelation technique, limiting the diffusion of targeted pollutants to the beads' inner region. This study prepared Ca-alginate beads with a distinctive core-shell, immobilizing different functional materials via an inverse gelation technique, to remove lead(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Fe2O3 nanoparticles were immobilized within the core and carbonaceous materials were immobilized in th

Alginate oligosaccharides relieve estrogen-deprived osteosarcopenia by affecting intestinal Th17 differentiation and systemic inflammation through the manipulation of bile acid metabolism.

Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) have gained attention for their capacity to regulate human health as prebiotics. Osteosarcopenia is a progressive disease of the musculoskeletal system and result in heavy burden of patients. Studies suggest that gut microbiota is involved in the pathogenesis of osteosarcopenia, whether AOS can improve the symptoms of osteosarcopenia by modulating gut microbiota remains to be elucidated. In this study, we proved that 200 mg/kg body weight AOS (MW = 4.9 kDa, G/M = 1.88) treatment significantly increased bone mass, boosted muscle function, and promoted gut barrier

Cell Response Toward Inflammation of DPSCs Co-Cultured With Streptococcus mutans in the Presence of Alginate/Hydroxyapatite-Based Scaffolds Enriched With Silver Nanoparticles.

Managing bone defects is challenging, with autologous grafts being the most effective treatment. Biomaterials like alginate/hydroxyapatite (Alg/Hap) composites are increasingly used due to their biocompatibility and osteoconductive properties. Graft implantation in the oral cavity may trigger inflammatory responses, such as periodontitis, pulpitis, or caries, due to biomaterial recognition as non-self and the presence of pathogens like Streptococcus mutans. Conjugating Alg/Hap composites with antimicrobial silver nanoparticles (nAg) offers a strategy to counteract oral inflammation caused by m

Alginate Hydrogel Integrated with a Human Fibroblast-Derived Extracellular Matrix Supports Corneal Endothelial Cell Functionality and Suppresses Endothelial-Mesenchymal Transition.

Human corneal transplantation is still the only option to restore the function of corneal endothelial cells (CECs). Therefore, there is an urgent need for hCEC delivery systems to replace the human donor cornea. Here, we propose an alginate hydrogel (AH)-based delivery system, where a human fibroblast-derived, decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) was physically integrated with AH. This AH securely combined with the ECM (ECM-AH) was approximately 50 μm thick, transparent, and permeable. The surface roughness and surface potential provided ECM-AH with a favorable microenvironment for CEC ad

From micropores to mechanical strength: Fabrication and characterization of edible corn starch-sodium alginate double network hydrogels with Ca2+ cross-linking.

This study explores the fabrication and characterization of corn starch‑sodium alginate double network hydrogels using two distinct calcium ion cross-linking methods: the gluconolactone immersed method (GIM) and the calcium chloride immersed method (CCIM). We investigated the ionic cross-linking mechanism of these hydrogels and compared their microstructure and mechanical properties. Our results highlight significant differences between GIM and CCIM hydrogels, with the CCIM method producing a more uniform and compact network. At the same calcium ion concentration, CCIM hydrogel exhibited highe

Rapid visual detection of sulfur dioxide residues in food using acid-sensitive CdTe quantum dots-loaded alginate hydrogel beads.

Acid-sensitive CdTe quantum dots-loaded alginate hydrogel (CdTe QDs-AH) beads were designed for the visual detection of SO2 residues. As proof of concept, two types of CdTe QDs were selected as model probes and embedded in AH beads. The entire test was performed within 25 min in a modified double-layer test tube with one bead fixed above the sample solution. Adding citric acid and heating at 70 ℃ for 20 min transformed the sulfites in the solution into SO2 gas, which then quenched the fluorescence of the CdTe QDs-AH beads. Using this assay, qualitative, naked-eye detection of SO2 residues was

Multifunctional embelin- poly (3-hydroxybutyric acid) and sodium alginate-based core-shell electrospun nanofibrous mat for wound healing applications.

In this study, coaxial electrospinning is employed to make core-shell fibers, which represents a major advance in biomaterial innovation. Fibers that combine a protective shell and a therapeutic agent-loaded core, herald a revolutionary era in tissue engineering and wound care. Besides supporting cell growth, these fibers also preserve sterility, which makes them ideal for advanced wound dressings. We used embelin as the basis for this study because of its natural antibacterial properties. Its effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of bacteria made it the ideal candidate for our research. We h
