Congenital optic nerve hypoplasia (CONH) is an increasingly recognized cause of low vision in children. The spectrum of ophthalmoscopic and clinical presentations of CONH is described here with illustrative cases. Some children with unilateral CONH develop a secondary, functional amblyopia that may respond to patching during visual development. Children with bilateral CONH, poor vision and nystagmus usually present early and have a high risk of exhibiting central nervous system (CNS) malformations and treatable endocrine deficiencies.

An epidemiological survey of blindness and low vision in Chongqing showed that in a random sample of 13,832, there were 62 cases of bilateral blindness and 97 cases of bilateral low vision, the prevalences being 0.45% (male 0.38%, female 0.52%) and 0.70% (male 0.50%, female 0.90%) respectively. The prevalences in people over 60 years of age were significantly higher. The important blinding diseases were cataract, infectious keratitis, corneal turbidity, glaucoma, trachoma, and ametropia/amblyopia.

Dichoptically presented uniform fields were sinusoidally modulated in luminance, with differing temporal frequencies between the eyes. This stimulus evokes a unique electrophysiological response termed "beats"; visual evoked potential (VEP) components reflecting nonlinear neural behavior and which could only arise from integrative binocular units. Individuals with strabismus or amblyopia, which accompany disrupted binocular function in the visual cortex manifest a severe reduction of this nonlinearity, suggesting an abnormality in the binocular cortical processes underlying this response.

Strabismus is misalignment of one eye in relation to the other, resulting in failure of the 2 eyes to simultaneously focus on the same image and loss of binocular vision. Strabismus affects 2% to 4% of the population and can result in amblyopia, which is often not discovered in time to initiate effective treatment. Thus, an understanding of the genetic underpinnings of strabismus may help identify patients at risk early enough to prevent disability and may lead to new preventive or therapeutic approaches.

The cornea is one of the rare transparent tissues in nature. Its clarity and curvature are essential for clear and precise vision. This clarity may be adversely affected by a number of congenital and developmental conditions. It is important to recognize these defects early in order to prevent amblyopia, and, in many cases, to rule out congenital glaucoma or associated congenital or developmental disorders. Early treatment of corneal disorders may prevent permanent visual loss and can facilitate early visual rehabilitation.

The Visual Evoked Potential is the objective measurement of visual function monitored at the level of the occipital cortex with scalp electrodes. This article summarizes many of the recent clinical applications of the VEP. Included are basic concepts of the VEP and its clinical utilization for the objective assessment of refractive error, visual acuity, amblyopia, binocularity, demyelinating diseases, psychogenic disorders, pre-surgical prediction of post-surgical visual function, visual fields, color blindness and neurological development.

A 31-year-old male with bilateral microphthalmos and a history of severe refractive amblyopia presented with early nuclear sclerosis. Intraocular lens calculations determined the patient would need about a 46.0 diopter power intraocular lens in both eyes to achieve satisfactory vision postoperatively. When no manufacturer could or was willing to make such a high-power lens, we chose to implant two lenses in each eye. The patient is satisfied with his postoperative vision and overall outcome.

The visual outcomes of seven children with specific optic nerve pathologies and coexisting amblyopia after at least 1 year of part-time patching demonstrated a visual acuity improvement of greater than 0.1 logMAR. The results suggest that part-time patching may lead to improvement in visual function even in the setting of optic nerve pathology, albeit with a more limited response compared to full-time patching. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2023;60(3):e19-e21.].

Unilateral, mostly traumatic cataract in children and adults is considered a good indication for lens implant surgery in developing countries. In Suriname fourteen patients with unilateral, non-senile cataract underwent pseudophakos surgery from 1975 to 1980. No major complications occurred. In ten of the fourteen patients good binocular vision was achieved. Two patients had good visual acuity with poor focus. One patient had persistent deprivation amblyopia. Six patients were ultimately lost to follow-up.

Acupuncture is recognized as a component of alternative medicine and is increasingly used worldwide. Many studies have shown the various effects of acupuncture around the eyes for ophthalmologic or nonophthalmologic conditions. For ophthalmologic conditions, the effect of acupuncture on dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, myopia, amblyopia, ophthalmoplegia, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, blepharospasm, and blepharoptosis has been reported. Recently, several studies on dry eye syndrome have been reported and are in the spotlight. However, given the variety of study designs and reported outcomes of perio…

In addition to refractive errors such as myopia and astigmatism, ocular disorders that occur in infants, toddlers, and children may present lifelong problems for the child. Conditions such as strabismus, amblyopia, and retinopathy of prematurity may require adaptations in adulthood. In addition, vision disorders that occur in childhood may manifest as problems well into adulthood. When visual impairment is present, there may be further effects on overall health, self-perception, educational attainment, job choices, and a number of other social factors.

Congenital glaucoma is a rare and very polymorphous condition. Recent major advances in the pathogenesis, the genetics, the clinical diagnosis and the treatment of the disease have contributed to radically improve its prognosis. The diagnosis and the monitoring of a child with a congenital glaucoma are part of a multidisciplinary care approach where surgery is predominant and which must aim both to normalize the intraocular pressure in the long term and to attempt to improve the development of the visual function through a careful and lasting treatment of the associated functional amblyopia.

Nineteen children with this syndrome aged 4 months to 15 years were treated. In case of a functioning hyaloid artery, the authors used an original surgical method. Visual functions were improved in 76.9% cases. In 23.1% cases vision acuity remained unchanged because of profound degenerative changes in the retina. Clinical results demonstrate the necessity of early surgery in children with the syndrome in question, because opening of the central retinal zone prevents the development of deprivation amblyopia.

Two Alaskan boys were struck in the eye by flexible, bow-shaped girls' headbands. One suffered blunt, non-penetrating injury with hyphema and retinal injury resulting in loss of vision. The other suffered penetrating injury due to the atypical sharp nature of the headband; he required vitrectomy, lensectomy, secondary intraocular lens implant and intense amblyopia therapy. These cases highlight the preponderance of eye injury in boys who use "toys" in a manner for which they were not designed.
