Veterinarians' knowledge and practices on animal Tungiasis in Bahia State, Northeast Brazil.

Tungiasis is a skin-related neglected tropical disease affecting vulnerable communities, with significant risk to both human and animal health. We investigated knowledge and practices of veterinarians in Bahia State, Brazil, regarding animal tungiasis. An online questionnaire was sent to 600 veterinarians, with a response rate of 209/600 (34.8%). A total of 197/600 (32.8%) questionnaires were valid and included in the analysis. The majority of veterinarians (158/190; 83.2%) self-reported knowledge about Tunga sp., 136/197 (69.0%) had previously treated animals with tungiasis, and 136/183 (74.3

High body energy reserve influences extracellular vesicles miRNA contents within the ovarian follicle.

Aiming to evaluate the effects of increased body energy reserve (BER) in Nellore cows' reproductive efficiency, cows were fed with different nutritional plans to obtain animals with high BER (HBER; Ad libitum diet) and moderate BER (MBER: cows fed 70% of HBER group ingestion). To evaluate the BER, cows were weekly weighted and evaluated for subcutaneous fat thickness and insulin serum concentration along the experimental period. At the end of the experimental period, animals were submitted to estrous synchronization and artificial insemination. Animals were slaughtered approximately 120 h afte

GABAergic synaptic transmission and cortical oscillation patterns in the primary somatosensory area of a valproic acid rat model of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impaired social communication and interaction associated with repetitive or stereotyped behaviour. Prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure in rodents is a commonly used model of ASD. Resveratrol (RSV) has been shown to prevent interneuronal and behavioural impairments in the VPA model. We investigated the effects of prenatal VPA exposure and RSV on the GABAergic synaptic transmission, brain oscillations and on the genic expression of interneuron-associated transcription factor LHX6 in the primary somatosensory area (PSSA). Prenatal VPA exposure

A Three-Year Biocrime Sanitary Surveillance on Illegally Imported Companion Animals.

The illegal trade of companion animals in the European Union poses several legal, ethical and health issues to the entire community. In the framework of the Biocrime Interreg project between Italy and Austria, we surveyed puppies and kittens confiscated at the borders to identify the most frequent pathogens associated with (i) the risk of spread within the shelter, (ii) the development of fatal disease and (iii) the zoonotic potential. From January 2018 to December 2020, we examined a total of 613 puppies and 62 kittens coming from 44 requisitions. Feces, skin specimens and blood sera from con

An emerging public health problem: acquired carbapenemase-producing microorganisms are present in food-producing animals, their environment, companion animals and wild birds.

Worldwide, the emergence and global spread of microorganisms with acquired carbapenemases is of great concern. The reservoirs for such organisms are increasing, not only in hospitals, but also in the community and environment. A new and important development is the presence of such organisms in livestock, companion animals and wildlife. During the last three years, carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. (VIM-1 producers) and Acinetobacter spp. (producing OXA-23 and NDM-1) in livestock animals (poultry, cattle and swine) and their environment have been reported. In addition,

Ammonia disinfection of animal feeds --laboratory study.

Animal feeds may be contaminated, accidentally or maliciously, with a number of zoonotic bacteria. Animal infections with these bacterial agents, whether or not they cause animal disease, may lead to human illnesses. Anhydrous ammonia was introduced on farms in developed countries as a high-nitrogen soil amendment, but later found use in enhancing crude protein in low-quality roughage fed to ruminants and in neutralizing mycotoxins in fungus-infested feed grains. Although ammonia has been known to be effective against bacteria in other contexts (e.g., manure, community sewage sludge, seeds for

Canine vaccination--providing broader benefits for disease control.

This paper reviews the broader benefits of canine vaccination to human and animal health and welfare with an emphasis on the impacts of mass dog vaccination against rabies in countries of the less-developed world. Domestic dogs are the source of infection for the vast majority (>95%) of cases of human rabies worldwide, and dogs remain the principal reservoir throughout Africa and Asia. Canine vaccination against rabies has been shown to dramatically reduce the number of cases in dogs, the incidence of human animal-bite injuries (and hence the demand for costly post-exposure prophylaxis) and th

[Recirculation in the acute period of cerebral infarction: experimental research--brain swelling and its suppression using mannitol and glycerol (author's transl)].

Using our previously published "incomplete cerebral hemispheric infarction model in dogs" (produced by simultaneous, ipsilateral occlusion of the anterior cerebral artery at the branching of the ethmoidal artery from its A1 portion, the A2 portion, the internal carotid artery, the posterior communicating artery, the posterior cerebral artery and the anterior cerebellar artery), 2-, 4-, and 6-hour occlusion of blood flow were undertaken. Observations were then made on the degree of suppression of brain swelling following recirculation due to administration of various mannitol and glycerol solut

Gut microbiome changes in a captive giant panda with cardiovascular disease.

The interaction between gut bacteria and their host is vital for the early diagnosis and treatment of disease in captive animals. Here, we report a 16S rRNA sequencing-based bacterial profile during the progression of cardiovascular disease and drug treatment in a captive giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). We observed changes in the composition of bacteria associated with inflammation and regulating nutrient metabolism. Predicted metabolic functions also exhibited alterations. The remarkably reduced gut microbiome diversity, along with the imbalance in community interaction networks, indica

Multistate animal-contact-related nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica outbreaks in the United States, 2009-2022: Network and machine learning analyses of exposure sources, settings, and serovars.

BACKGROUND: Nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica (NTS) is a major public‑health threat in the United States of America (U.S.). Evaluating associations between serovars, exposure sources, and settings in multistate outbreaks can reveal the drivers of NTS transmission and guide prioritization of targeted prevention and control strategies. METHODS: We analyzed multistate animal‑contact-related NTS outbreaks reported to the CDC National Outbreak Reporting System during 2009-2022. We calculated incidence rates (IR) per 10 million population-years (MPY) and assessed temporal trends in IRs using Joinpoi

Prediction of cerebral ischemia by ophthalmoscopy after carotid occlusion in gerbils.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Mongolian gerbil provides a unique model of unilateral focal cerebral ischemia because of the lack of posterior communicating arteries in all gerbils as well as an absence of an anterior communicating artery in approximately 20% of the gerbil population. It is unclear how to identify unequivocably the subpopulation of animals that would suffer a severe focal cerebral ischemia after unilateral carotid occlusion. METHODS: Ninety-three male gerbils were exposed to unilateral occlusion of the right common carotid artery. The severity of neuronal loss was evaluated hist

A benchmark for computational analysis of animal behavior, using animal-borne tags.

BACKGROUND: Animal-borne sensors ('bio-loggers') can record a suite of kinematic and environmental data, which are used to elucidate animal ecophysiology and improve conservation efforts. Machine learning techniques are used for interpreting the large amounts of data recorded by bio-loggers, but there exists no common framework for comparing the different machine learning techniques in this domain. This makes it difficult to, for example, identify patterns in what works well for machine learning-based analysis of bio-logger data. It also makes it difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of nove

Microbial Interconnections in One Health: A Critical Nexus Between Companion Animals and Human Microbiomes.

The One Health approach is rapidly gaining the attention of the scientific community worldwide and is expected to be a major model of scientific reasoning in the 21st century, concerning medical, veterinary and environmental issues. The basic concept of One Health, that humans, animals and their environments are parts of the same natural world affecting each other, is rooted in most ethnic as well as in many religious traditions. Despite this unity and for historical reasons, medical, veterinary and environmental sciences developed independently. The One Health concept tries to reunite these a

Prevalence and diversity of gastrointestinal parasites in free-ranging rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in different land gradients of Bangladesh.

Rhesus macaques are considered an important reservoir of different gastrointestinal (GI) zoonotic parasites affecting livestock and humans. Loads of GI parasites in the free-ranging rhesus macaques living in close proximity to communities in Bangladesh are still unknown. To estimate the prevalence and diversity of zoonotic GI parasites in rhesus macaques of Bangladesh, a total of 182 freshly voided fecal samples were collected from macaques living in rural (N = 67), peri-urban (N = 57), urban (N = 28), and Safari park (N = 30) between October 2015 and December 2016. All samples were tested by

Detection and characterization of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae from the gut of subsistence farmers, their livestock, and the surrounding environment in rural Nepal.

The increasing trend of gut colonization by extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing Enterobacterales has been observed in conventional farm animals and their owners. Still, such colonization among domesticated organically fed livestock has not been well studied. This study aimed to determine the gut colonization rate of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) among rural subsistence farming communities of the Kaski district in Nepal. Rectal swabs collected by systematic random sampling from 128 households of subsistence farming communities

High Leptospira Diversity in Animals and Humans Complicates the Search for Common Reservoirs of Human Disease in Rural Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease responsible for high morbidity around the world, especially in tropical and low income countries. Rats are thought to be the main vector of human leptospirosis in urban settings. However, differences between urban and low-income rural communities provide additional insights into the epidemiology of the disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Our study was conducted in two low-income rural communities near the coast of Ecuador. We detected and characterized infectious leptospira DNA in a wide variety of samples using new real time quantitative P

Rabies exposures, post-exposure prophylaxis and deaths in a region of endemic canine rabies.

BACKGROUND: Thousands of human deaths from rabies occur annually despite the availability of effective vaccines following exposure, and for disease control in the animal reservoir. Our aim was to assess risk factors associated with exposure and to determine why human deaths from endemic canine rabies still occur. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Contact tracing was used to gather data on rabies exposures, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) delivered and deaths in two rural districts in northwestern Tanzania from 2002 to 2006. Data on risk factors and the propensity to seek and complete courses of PEP was c

Central regulation of photosensitive membrane turnover in the lateral eye of Limulus. I. Octopamine primes the retina for daily transient rhabdom shedding.

Limulus lateral eyes shed and renew a portion of their photosensitive membrane (rhabdom) daily. Shedding, in many species including Limulus, is regulated by complex interactions between circadian rhythms and light. Little is known about how circadian clocks and photoreceptors communicate to regulate shedding. Limulus photoreceptors do not contain an endogenous circadian oscillator, but rely upon efferent outflow from a central clock for circadian timing. To investigate whether the putative efferent neurotransmitter octopamine (OA) communicates circadian rhythms that prime the lateral eye for t

Joint human and animal vaccination strategies to reach mobile pastoralists and their livestock in Africa: A scoping review.

Africa's pastoralist population exceeds 268 million and occupies over 40% of the continent's land. Mobile pastoralists connected to their livestock are underrepresented in data and face barriers to accessing fixed vaccination services. We aimed to identify and describe joint human-animal vaccination strategies to improve immunisation coverage among mobile pastoralists and their animals. We conducted a scoping review and followed Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We screened 2469 records from 12 databases. Five studies (2004-2016) from Chad, Nigeria, and Somalia met the inclusi

Dicrocoelium spp. in cattle from Wa, Ghana: prevalence and phylogeny based on 28S rRNA.

Dicrocoeliosis is a trematode infection in cattle, sheep and goats caused by the small liver fluke, Dicrocoelium spp. Though endemic in Ghana, its disease situation is poorly understood. In the present study, the prevalence, distribution and worm load of Dicrocoelium spp. in cattle at slaughter in Wa were determined. A total of 389 cattle were screened during meat inspection for liver flukes, and polymerase chain reaction accompanied by DNA sequencing of the 28S rRNA gene was used to identify Dicrocoelium spp. Generally, prevalence of bovine dicrocoeliosis (small liver fluke) stood at 19.54 %
