Ferula hermonis: A Review of Current Use and Pharmacological Studies of its Sesquiterpene Ester Ferutinin.

Ferula hermonis Boiss, is an endemic plant of Lebanon, locally known as "shilsh Elzallouh". It has been extensively used in the traditional medicine as an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of sexual impotence. Crude extracts and isolated compounds of ferula hermonis contain phytoestrogenic substances having a wide spectrum of in vitro and in vivo pharmacological properties including anti-osteoporosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-fungal, anti-cancer and as sexual activity enhancer. The aim of this mini-review is to highlight the traditional and novel applications of this plant's

A semimechanistic model of the time-course of release of PTH into plasma following administration of the calcilytic JTT-305/MK-5442 in humans.

JTT-305/MK-5442 is a calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) allosteric antagonist being investigated for the treatment of osteoporosis. JTT-305/MK-5442 binds to CaSRs, thus preventing receptor activation by Ca(2+) . In the parathyroid gland, this results in the release of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Sharp spikes in PTH secretion followed by rapid returns to baseline are associated with bone formation, whereas sustained elevation in PTH is associated with bone resorption. We have developed a semimechanistic, nonpopulation model of the time-course relationship between JTT-305/MK-5442 and whole plasma PT

The effects of some benzoic acid derivatives on polymorphonuclear leukocyte accumulation in vivo.

Previous studies, aimed at establishing a relationship between the inhibition of prostaglandin (PG) biosynthesis and the suppression of carrageenin-induced rat paw edema, indicated that, in a series of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)-like compounds, there is not a good correlation between ability to inhibit platelet PG biosynthesis and anti-inflammatory activity. Some of the compounds tested had good anti-edema properties compared to ASA, but did not inhibit platelet lysate conversion of 14C-arachidonic acid (AA) to PGs. The effects of these compounds on polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocyte accumulati

[Effects of trimebutine maleate on the gastrointestinal motility in conscious dogs].

Trimebutine maleate is known to have beneficial effect in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. In conscious dogs with implanted force transducers, effects of trimebutine maleate on the gastrointestinal motility were investigated by intravenous injection, and the results were compared to those with metoclopramide and hyoscine-N-butylbromide. When trimebutine maleate was administered during the motor quiescence in the interdigestive state, contractions were evoked or the quiescent time was shortened in the gastrointestinal tract. In the digestive state, the gastric antral contractile act

Sheabutter V: effect of particle size on release of medicament from ointment.

An ointment prepared from fat (sheabutter) obtainable from an indigenous (African) fruit released medicaments faster than either of the two ointment bases recommended by the British Pharmacopoeia. Reduction in particle size of crystalline medicaments incorporated in ointments increased surface area and transfer from the ointment to the substrate, possibly due to greater dissolution in the base, and, therefore, increased the availability of medicament at the ointment-substrate interface.

The nature, intergeneric distribution and biosynthesis of isoprenoid quinones and phenols in gram-negative bacteria.

1. Twenty-two aerobically grown Gram-negative bacteria were analysed for demethylmenaquinones, menaquinones, 2-polyprenylphenols, 6-methoxy-2-polyprenylphenols and ubiquinones. 2. All the eight enterobacteria and both the two facultative organisms (Aeromonas punctata and Aeromonas hydrophila) examined contain all the compounds listed above. The principal homologues are octaprenyl; in addition lower (down to tri- or tetra-prenyl for the 2-polyprenylphenols) and sometimes higher homologues are also present. 3. Strict aerobes are of two types, those that contain 2-polyprenylphenols, 6-methoxy-2-p

Discovery of benzimidazole derivatives as LDHA inhibitors with antitumor activity.

LDHA is aberrantly overexpressed in various malignancies and drives enhanced glycolytic flux. Although LDHA inhibitors have shown promising antitumor activity in preclinical studies, no such targeted antitumor drugs have been approved for clinical use at present. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of benzimidazole derivatives bearing benzoate substituents. We evaluated their antitumor activity in vitro and in vivo, along with their LDHA inhibitory potency. Compounds 8h and 8d emerged as the primary candidates. Both exhibited LDHA inhibition activity. They inhibited proliferati

Shaking promotes the accumulation of flavor-imparting metabolites and enhances the sensory quality of spring black tea.

This study aimed to systematically investigate how shaking treatment influences the dynamic changes of nonvolatile and volatile metabolites during black tea processing and to determine its impact on the final tea quality. We compared conventional processing with shaking-incorporated methods using LC-MS, GC-MS, and HS-SPME-GC-MS. Shaking induced substantial metabolic alterations, identifying 3780 (LC-MS) and 129 (GC-MS) differential nonvolatile metabolites enriched in linoleic acid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and caffeine metabolism. Key taste components, including theaflavins and kaempf

Crusted Scabies Mimicking Psoriasis in a Patient With Down Syndrome: A Case Report.

Crusted scabies, also known as Norwegian scabies, is a rare but highly contagious variant of scabies characterized by extensive hyperkeratotic plaques and a heavy mite burden. It predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals or those with neurological or cognitive impairments, including individuals with Down syndrome. We report the case of a 29-year-old man with Down syndrome who developed a progressive, treatment-resistant erythematosquamous eruption initially misdiagnosed as psoriasis. Topical corticosteroid therapy led to clinical worsening, with widespread hyperkeratotic and crusted

Exploring the potential of sequential fermentation with indigenous Candida sp. and Saccharomyces cerevisiae to enhance chemical profile and flavor characteristics of apricot wine.

Three indigenous yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae S-7, Candida humilis DBXD1, and Candida glabrata X6, were evaluated for their potential to enhance the aromatic complexity of apricot wines. Specific activity analysis revealed high β-glucosidase (>2.84 U/mg prot) and esterase (>0.76 U/mg prot) production by these strains. Sequential fermentation of Candida sp. with S. cerevisiae S2-7 increased the contents of key volatile compounds, including ethyl esters (ethyl 9-decenoate, ethyl laurate, ethyl palmitate, ethyl benzoate), acetates (ethyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, hexyl acetate), alcohols (1-h

The intramolecular stabilizing effects of O-benzoyl substituents as a driving force of the acid-promoted pyranoside-into-furanoside rearrangement.

Furanoside derivatives are broadly present in the antigenic structures of pathogenic microorganisms and play a key role in their recognition by the host immune system. Despite the high demand for vaccine and diagnostic development, their chemical synthesis remains challenging. During the development of a new methodology for the synthesis of galactofuranoside building blocks, we encountered an unexpected predominance of the furanoside form in the equilibrium mixture of benzoylated β-galactosides. Since the furanoside form is typically less stable and is usually present only in minor amounts, we
