Predictors of successful self control during brain-computer communication.

OBJECTIVES: Direct brain-computer communication uses self regulation of brain potentials to select letters, words, or symbols from a computer menu to re-establish communication in severely paralysed patients. However, not all healthy subjects, or all paralysed patients acquire the skill to self regulate their brain potentials, and predictors of successful learning have not been found yet. Predictors are particularly important, because only successful self regulation will in the end lead to efficient brain-computer communication. This study investigates the question whether initial performance

Combined motor disturbances following severe traumatic brain injury: an integrative long-term treatment approach.

Patients surviving severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often suffer from residual impairments in motor control, communication skills, cognition and social behaviour. These distinctly hamper their capability to return to their 'pre-trauma' activity. Comprehensive and integrated rehabilitation programmes initiate, during the acute phase, a prolonged treatment process which starts at the most sophisticated medical systems. There is no clear end point for the treatment of these patients, since the recovery process and the rehabilitation activity may continue for years, even after patients return h

Effect of EMG biofeedback compared to applied relaxation training with chronic, upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders.

This study examined the relative effectiveness of EMG biofeedback, applied relaxation training and a combined procedure in the management of chronic, upper extremity cumulative trauma disorder. Forty-eight patients with a history of about 5-6 years of upper extremity pain were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatment conditions, namely applied relaxation training, EMG biofeedback, a combined approach or a wait-list control. Treatments were conducted on an individual basis, twice per week for 4 weeks. Patients in all 3 treatment conditions showed significant short-term reductions in pain and psych

Agonist and antagonist activity during voluntary upper-limb movement in patients with stroke.

Forty-four patients with hemiplegia following stroke and 10 nondisabled subjects were studied to examine the contributions inadequate motor unit recruitment and co-contraction attributable to impaired antagonist inhibition play in the movement disorder of the hemiplegic arm. Electromyographic data were recorded from agonist and antagonist muscles while subjects attempted six specified tasks. Data from subjects who could complete the tasks were compared with those who could not complete the tasks. Differences between the two groups were found in the electromyographic data obtained from the agon

Study protocol for a randomized clinical pilot trial investigating feasibility and efficacy of augmenting a virtual reality-assisted intervention targeting auditory verbal hallucinations with biofeedback: The Neuro-VR study.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory Verbal Hallucinations (AVH) are among the most frequent and severe symptoms in schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. Virtual Reality (VR)-assisted interventions have emerged, demonstrating promising potential in reducing AVH severity. This treatment approach may be challenged with regards to feasibility, particularly when therapeutically managing the anxiety-related reactions associated with AVH. This pilot study evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of augmenting VR-assisted therapy with real-time biofeedback to address these challenges. The integration o

Treatment of acute and chronic facial palsy in children and adolescents: Prognostic factors for the outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric facial palsy is a rare disease. There is a lack of data on the outcome of peripheral acute facial palsy (AFP) or chronic facial palsy (CFP) in children and adolescents after treatment and on the prognostic factors. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in a university facial nerve center. Clinical data was analyzed for their impact on probability of recovery or functional improvement using univariable and multivariable statistics. RESULTS: 84 F P patients (range: 0-18 years, 35 % AFP, 17.9 % flaccid CFP; 29.8 % synkinetic CFP) treated 2003-2021 were included. A

Favorable Clinical Outcomes After Humeral Head Depressor Muscle Coactivation Training With EMG for Patients With Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The coactivation (Co-A) of shoulder muscles that contribute to humeral head depression can lead to mechanical unloading of the subacromial structures during abduction and thus can be beneficial for patients with arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR). The present study aims to examine the effectiveness of humeral head depressor muscle Co-A (DM-Co-A) training on clinical outcomes in a sample of patients with ARCR. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that DM-Co-A training with medioinferior vector during glenohumeral exercises can improve clinical results in the rehabilitation of ARCR. ST

Visual rehabilitation using microperimetric acoustic biofeedback training in individuals with central scotoma.

BACKGROUND: Patients with central scotoma have poor fixation stability and poor visual acuity. Acoustic biofeedback training can be an effective way to train such patients to eccentrically fixate. This study analyses the mean retinal sensitivity, saccadic velocity, and fixation stability after acoustic biofeedback training and shows correlation with age and scotoma size. METHODS: Patients with irreversible central scotoma in both the eyes secondary to macular diseases were selected. After undergoing comprehensive low vision assessment, 19 patients who were willing were recruited for the acous

Biofeedback vs. game scores for reducing trunk compensation after stroke: a randomized crossover trial.

Background Compensatory movements are commonly employed by stroke survivors, and their use can have negative effects on motor recovery. Current practices to reduce them rely on strapping a person to a chair. The use of technology to substitute or supplement this methodology has not being thoroughly investigated. Objective To compare the use of Scores + Visual + Force and Visual + Force feedback for reducing trunk compensation. Methods Fourteen hemiparetic stroke survivors performed bimanual reaching movements while receiving feedback on trunk compensation. Participants held onto two robotic ar

Quantitative biomechanical assessment of trunk control in Huntington's disease reveals more impairment in static than dynamic tasks.

Postural instability is common in individuals with Huntington's disease (HD), yet little is known about control of the trunk during static and dynamic activities. We compared the trunk motion of 41 individuals with HD and 36 controls at thoracic and pelvic levels during sitting, standing, and walking using wearable iPod sensors. We also examined the ability of individuals with HD to respond to an auditory cue to modify trunk position when the pelvis moved >8° in sagittal or frontal planes during sitting using custom software. We found that amplitude of thoracic and pelvic trunk movements was s

Integration of Motor Learning Principles Into Real-Time Ambulatory Voice Biofeedback and Example Implementation Via a Clinical Case Study With Vocal Fold Nodules.

PURPOSE: Ambulatory voice biofeedback (AVB) has the potential to significantly improve voice therapy effectiveness by targeting one of the most challenging aspects of rehabilitation: carryover of desired behaviors outside of the therapy session. Although initial evidence indicates that AVB can alter vocal behavior in daily life, retention of the new behavior after biofeedback has not been demonstrated. Motor learning studies repeatedly have shown retention-related benefits when reducing feedback frequency or providing summary statistics. Therefore, novel AVB settings that are based on these co

Developing Non-Somatotopic Phantom Finger Sensation to Comparable Levels of Somatotopic Sensation through User Training With Electrotactile Stimulation.

Cutaneous electrical stimulation can provide tactile feedback for upper-limb amputees through somatotopic feedback (SF) or non-somatotopic feedback (NF). The SF delivers electrotactile stimulus to projection finger maps (PFMs) on the stumps of amputees, which outperforms NF that transfers stimulus to other human intact skin areas in general. However, the SF areas on stumps are very limited and often occupied by electromyography (EMG) sensors in application of myoelectric prosthesis. This work aims at improving NF performance on human upper arms through user training with electrotactile stimula

Efficacy of anorectal biofeedback in scleroderma patients with fecal incontinence: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether anorectal biofeedback therapy can improve the symptoms of fecal incontinence (FI) in patients with scleroderma when compared to patients with functional FI, and also whether there is any effect on anorectal physiology or quality of life (QOL). FI in patients with scleroderma is highly prevalent and is associated with significant loss of QOL. Biofeedback has been proven to be an effective treatment for functional FI, but there are no data to support its use in scleroderma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 13 consecutive female patients (median age 59, IQR 47-65 years) wit

Effects of heart rate variability biofeedback on cardiovascular responses and autonomic sympathovagal modulation following stressor tasks in prehypertensives.

Autonomic dysfunction is implicated in prehypertension, and previous studies have suggested that therapies that improve modulation of sympathovagal balance, such as biofeedback and slow abdominal breathing, are effective in patients with prehypertension at rest. However, considering that psychophysiological stressors may be associated with greater cardiovascular risk in prehypertensives, it is important to investigate whether heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) results in equivalent effects on autonomic cardiovascular responses control during stressful conditions in prehypertensives. Motor learning with augmented feedback: modality-dependent behavioral and neural consequences.

Sensory information is critical to correct performance errors online during the execution of complex tasks and can be complemented by augmented feedback (FB). Here, 2 groups of participants acquired a new bimanual coordination pattern under different augmented FB conditions: 1) visual input reflecting coordination between the 2 hands and 2) auditory pacing integrating the timing of both hands into a single temporal structure. Behavioral findings revealed that the visual group became dependent on this augmented FB for performance, whereas the auditory group performed equally well with or withou

Effects of self-hypnosis training and EMG biofeedback relaxation training on chronic pain in persons with spinal-cord injury.

Thirty-seven adults with spinal-cord injury and chronic pain were randomly assigned to receive 10 sessions of self-hypnosis (HYP) or EMG biofeedback relaxation (BIO) training for pain management. Participants in both treatment conditions reported substantial, but similar, decreases in pain intensity from before to after the treatment sessions. However, participants in the HYP condition, but not the BIO condition, reported statistically significant decreases in daily average pain pre- to posttreatment. These pre- to posttreatment decreases in pain reported by the HYP participants were maintaine
