Maternal PCaaC38:6 is Associated With Preterm Birth - a Risk Factor for Early and Late Adverse Outcome of the Offspring.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Preterm birth (PTB) and low birth weight (LBW) significantly influence mortality and morbidity of the offspring in early life and also have long-term consequences in later life. A better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of preterm birth could provide new insights regarding putative preventive strategies. Metabolomics provides a powerful analytic tool to readout complex interactions between genetics, environment and health and may serve to identify relevant biomarkers. In this study, the association between 163 targeted maternal blood metabolites and gestational age wa

[Hyperglycemia and glucosuria in preterm infants receiving parenteral glucose: influence of birth weight, gestational age and infusion rate].

OBJECTIVE: Morbidity and mortality of premature infants have decreased considerably over the last decades, therefore, adequate nutrition of the premature is a major concern. Enteral feeding is the route of choice, but when it is not possible the parenteral route, which contains glucose as one of its main components, is used. Glucose infusions are not devoid of risk as they facilitate the development of hyperglycemia leading to intracranial hemorrhage, glucosuria and dehydration. The aim of this paper is to relate hyperglycemia and glucosuria to birth weight, gestational age and glucose infusio

Alpha-thalassemia minor and neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.

Infants on this island are known to have higher incidences of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and alpha-thalassemia minor than Caucasians. In order to investigate the correlation between these two conditions, we collected a total of 110 newborns with alpha-thalassemia minor delivered at the National Taiwan University Hospital during the period from January 1985 through February 1988 for this retrospective study. The infants in the study group were ascertained to have the condition by the presence of Hb Bart's with a concentration from 3% to 13%, in the cord blood. None of them had glucose-6-phosph

The uptake of [14C]deoxyglucose into brain of young rats with inherited hydrocephalus.

The effect of hydrocephalus on cerebral glucose utilization as reflected by deoxyglucose uptake has been examined in rats with inherited hydrocephalus at 10, 20, and 28 days after birth using a semiquantitative method. Injection of [14C]deoxyglucose intraperitoneally was followed by freezing the brain, sectioning, and quantitative autoradiography of 10 brain regions. Brain [14C] concentration, cortical thickness, and plasma glucose concentrations were measured. Maximal thinning of the cerebral cortex had already occurred by 10 days after birth, although obvious symptoms such as gait disturbanc

Optimal site of care for administration of extended half-life respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) antibodies to infants in the United States (US).

INTRODUCTION: New extended half-life antibodies for the single-dose prevention of medically attended (MA) respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) have been developed for administration to all infants before or during their first RSV season. For infants born during the season, administration as soon as feasible after birth would provide optimal protection and minimize access disparities. The objective of this study was to assess the time from birth hospitalization discharge to the first outpatient visit (FOV) among US infants in order to determine optimal site

Artificial Intelligence-Driven Respiratory Distress Syndrome Prediction for Very Low Birth Weight Infants: Korean Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a disease that commonly affects premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed. RDS results from a lack of surfactant in the lungs. The more premature the infant is, the greater is the likelihood of having RDS. However, even though not all premature infants have RDS, preemptive treatment with artificial pulmonary surfactant is administered in most cases. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop an artificial intelligence model to predict RDS in premature infants to avoid unnecessary treatment. METHODS: In this study, 13,087 very low birth weigh

Listening to Women: Recommendations from Women of Color to Improve Experiences in Pregnancy and Birth Care.

INTRODUCTION: Women of color are at increased risk for poor birth outcomes, often driven by upstream social determinants and socially structured systems. Given the increasing rate of maternal mortality in the United States, particularly for women of color, there is a pressing need to find solutions to improving care quality and access for racially marginalized communities. This study aims to describe and thematically analyze the recommendations to improve pregnancy and birth care made by women of color with lived experience of perinatal health care. METHODS: Twenty-two women of color living i

Variation by state in outcomes classification for deliveries less than 500 g in the United States.

The purpose of this study is to explore state-level fetal death rates and <24 h infant mortality rates for deliveries less than 500 g in order to estimate outcomes classification differences at the edge of viability. We selected singleton deliveries to US resident mothers born <500 g and >20 weeks gestation from the NCHS live birth-infant death and fetal death files for 1999-2002 (n = 37,813). Infant deaths within 24 h of birth were selected to estimate odds of classification as a fetal death versus a live birth/infant death by state. Logistic regression was used to derive odds of classificati

Pre-operative time course changes in liver function tests in biliary atresia: its usefulness in the discrimination of biliary atresia in early infancy.

In order to investigate the possibility of early discrimination of extrahepatic biliary atresia from other cholestatic diseases, a series of results of liver function tests in infants with cholestatic diseases were reviewed. The results of routine liver function tests (LFT) recorded in patients' charts were reviewed within 12 weeks after birth in 47 infants with extrahepatic biliary atresia (BA), 10 infants with neonatal hepatitis (NH) and 130 age-matched control infants (CO) without cholestatic diseases. The mean of each test value for each week after birth was derived from the actual data ex

Obstetric outcomes and uptake of care among 149 non-Swedish speaking migrant women attending a birth preparation visit during pregnancy - An observational study from Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: In Sweden almost one third of the population is born in another country and a large number of the women who do not speak Swedish are of reproductive age. Women migrating from low-income countries have higher risks for poor obstetric outcomes than receiving country-born citizens. INFOR (a Swedish word for "before" or "ahead of") is an intervention offering language-assisted, individual birth preparation for non-Swedish speaking pregnant women unfamiliar with the maternity care system. The aim of this study was to describe the uptake of care and obstetric outcomes among non-Swedish

Paediatricians' perspectives on global health priorities for newborn care in a developing country: a national survey from Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: An understanding of the perception of paediatricians as key stakeholders in child healthcare delivery and the degree of congruence with current investment priorities is crucial in accelerating progress towards the attainment of global targets for child survival and overall health in developing countries. This study therefore elicited the views of paediatricians on current global priorities for newborn health in Nigeria as possible guide for policy makers. METHODS: Paediatric consultants and residents in the country were surveyed nationally between February and March 2011 using a q

Fetal reduction strategies in dichorionic triamniotic and monochorionic triamniotic triplets and pregnancy outcome: A cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Dichorionic triamniotic (DCTA) and monochorionic triamniotic (MCTA) triplet pregnancies are associated with significant maternal and fetal risks. Multifetal pregnancy reduction (MPR) or selective reduction (SR) may improve outcomes, but data specific to these complex chorionic configurations are limited. The aim of the present study was to evaluate fetal reduction strategies and pregnancy outcomes in DCTA and MCTA triplets. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 19 triplet pregnancies (14 DCTA, 5 MCTA) managed with MPR or SR at a tertiary care center in India between Jan
