Risks of infection to the bereaved.

Reports the results of an informal survey of over seventy emergency room (ER) nurses regarding the risk of infection to the bereaved due to blood and body fluid exposure when they are in contact with the deceased shortly after death. Results indicated that the nurses never considered the possibility of this risk. Notes that although the risk of HIV is less likely due to the fragile nature of the virus, hepatitis B and other infectious diseases can be transmitted. Suggests that hospital chaplains are in a unique position to assist in the protection of the bereaved from this potential hazard.

First case of neonatal fungemia caused by Aureobasidium melanogenum.

Aureobasidium melanogenum is a saprophytic, dematiaceous, yeast-like fungus rarely implicated in human infections. Here, we report the first case of A. melanogenum fungemia in a 30-week-old preterm, very low birth weight neonate born to a primigravida with history of gestational diabetes, pregnancy induced hypertension and oligohydramnios. The baby developed respiratory distress, hypotension, bradycardia, coagulopathy and septic shock shortly after birth, and eventually succumbed to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome on day 9 of life. Paired blood culture showed growth of a dematiaceous yeast

Application of a reverse line blot assay to the study of haemoparasites in cattle in Uganda.

Recent advances in genomic technology have focused many veterinary researchers on the possibility of producing one multivalent recombinant vaccine against all the haemoparasites that infect cattle in the tropics. Before such a vaccine is developed it is essential to define target cattle populations as well as the range of anti-pathogen vaccines required in order to control disease. To further this objective, we have evaluated a reverse line blot (RLB) assay, which simultaneously detects the principal tick transmitted protozoan and rickettsial cattle pathogens, in different epidemiological scen

Prevalence of tick-transmitted pathogens in cattle reveals that Theileria parva, Babesia bigemina and Anaplasma marginale are endemic in Burundi.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) constitute a major constraint for livestock development in sub-Saharan Africa, with East Coast fever (ECF) being the most devastating TBD of cattle. However, in Burundi, detailed information is lacking on the current prevalence of TBDs and on the associated economic losses from mortality and morbidity in cattle as well as the costs associated with TBD control and treatment. The aim of this study was, therefore, to assess the prevalence and spatial distribution of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in cattle across the major agro-ecological zones (AEZs) in Burund

Candidate biomarkers for mosquito age-grading identified by label-free quantitative analysis of protein expression in Aedes albopictus females.

UNLABELLED: We applied a "shotgun" approach based on nanoliquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry associated to label free quantification (LFQ) to identify proteins varying with age, independently from the physiological state, in Aedes albopictus, a mosquito species which in the last decades invaded temperate regions in North America and Europe, creating concerns for associated high nuisance and risk of arbovirus transmission. The combined "shotgun" and LFQ approach was shown to be highly suitable to simultaneously compare several biological samples, as needed in a study aimed t

Vector-borne pathogens in dogs from different regions of Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne pathogens (CVBPs) are increasingly relevant, particularly those of zoonotic concern, due to climate change and increased animal mobility. However, there is no information on the actual burden of these infections in canine populations in several Western and South-Central Asian countries, including Afghanistan. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the molecular prevalence of CVBP infections in stray and owned dogs across regions of Afghanistan. METHODS: From July 2020 to August 2024, a total of 100 dogs with outdoor lifestyles in four provinces of Afghanist

Molecular epidemiology and phylogenetics of canine haemoprotozoan and rickettsial infections in southern India.

Haemoprotozoan infections pose significant health risks to dogs, especially in tropical regions. This study investigated the epidemiology and molecular characteristics of Babesia gibsoni, Babesia vogeli, Hepatozoon canis, Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys, and Rickettsia spp. in 120 clinically affected dogs from southern India (November 2023-September 2024). Dogs exhibiting pyrexia, anorexia, and thrombocytopenia were screened via blood smear microscopy and PCR. Babesia spp. were most prevalent (66.7 %, 80/120), with co-infections of B. gibsoni and B. vogeli (76.3 % of Babesia-positive cases)

ATF6 enables pathogen infection in ticks by inducing stomatin and altering cholesterol dynamics.

How tick-borne pathogens interact with their hosts has been primarily studied in vertebrates where disease is observed. Comparatively less is known about pathogen interactions within the tick. Here, we report that Ixodes scapularis ticks infected with either Anaplasma phagocytophilum (causative agent of anaplasmosis) or Borrelia burgdorferi (causative agent of Lyme disease) show activation of the ATF6 branch of the unfolded protein response (UPR). Disabling ATF6 functionally restricts pathogen survival in ticks. When stimulated, ATF6 functions as a transcription factor, but is the least unders

Serological evidence of Anaplasma spp., Borrelia burgdorferi and Ehrlichia canis in dogs from the Republic of Korea by rapid diagnostic test kits.

BACKGROUND: Emergent and re-emergent canine tick-borne infections are attracting increasing attention worldwide. The rise in pet ownership and the close relationship between dogs and their owners are the most concerning factors because dogs may act as competent reservoirs for human tick-transmitted infectious agents. OBJECTIVES: This study contributes to the epidemiological surveillance of canine tick-transmitted infections with zoonotic risk in the Republic of Korea (ROK) by investigating the seroprevalence of the pathogens, Anaplasma spp., Borrelia burgdorferi, and Ehrlichia canis. No evidence for African swine fever virus DNA in haematophagous arthropods collected at wild boar baiting sites in Estonia.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly pathogenic viral disease affecting all Suidae, with Ornithodoros moubata complex soft ticks acting as the biological arthropod vectors of the causative agent, African swine fever virus (ASFV). While ASFV is also transmissible via direct contact, pig products and fomites, other arthropods may be involved in virus transmission and persistence. Therefore, we checked various groups of blood-feeding arthropods collected during summer 2017 in wild boar habitats on the Estonian Island of Saaremaa for the presence of ASFV. Saaremaa had the highest ASF infection pr

PATHOGEN PREVALANCE IN AMERICAN BLACK BEARS (URSUS AMERICANUS AMBLYCEPS) OF THE JEMEZ MOUNTAINS, NEW MEXICO, USA.

Informed management of American black bears (Ursus americanus) requires knowledge of the distribution and pathology of diseases affecting the species. Little information is available on pathogen prevalence from black bear populations in the Southwest, US, and it is unknown how these infections may influence black bear populations or disease transmission. We captured New Mexico black bears (Ursus americanus amblyceps) during 2016-17 as part of a long-term monitoring project and opportunistically collected 36 blood samples from 12 female and 17 male black bears. We wanted to determine prior expo

Total knee arthroplasty in patients with a history of illicit intravenous drug abuse.

PURPOSE: Injection drug users are at high risk for both infection with blood-borne pathogens, namely, human immune deficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis-B, -C virus, various bacterial infections, as well as early primary and secondary joint degeneration. When total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is anticipated the risk of septic complications is a major concern. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical and radiographic outcome of patients with a history of intravenous drug use after total knee arthroplasty. The primary outcome was revision rate. Secondary outcomes were the Western Ontario and…

Recombinant factor XIII: a safe and novel treatment for congenital factor XIII deficiency.

Congenital factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency is a rare, autosomal-recessive disorder, with most patients having an A-subunit (FXIII-A) deficiency. Patients experience life-threatening bleeds, impaired wound healing, and spontaneous abortions. In many countries, only plasma or cryoprecipitate treatments are available, but these carry a risk for allergic reactions and infection with blood-borne pathogens. The present study was a multinational, open-label, single-arm, phase 3 prophylaxis trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of a novel recombinant FXIII (rFXIII) in congenital FXIII-A subunit defi…

Bridging the gap: ex vivo human skin explants for mechanistic studies of arboviruses.

Arboviruses such as dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV), and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHFV) have been extensively studied in cell culture and animal models, yet how these findings translate to early infection events in human skin remains largely uncertain. Standard monolayers lack the stratified architecture and resident immune cells of the epidermis and dermis, while rodent skin differs markedly in structure, immunity, and mosquito interactions. Ex vivo human skin explants bridge this translational gap by preserving the native cutaneous microenvironment, including k

More than Skin Deep: Primary Inoculation with Mycobacterium tuberculosis as an Occupational Hazard.

BACKGROUND: Sharps injuries pose a significant occupational risk for healthcare and laboratory workers, with hundreds of thousands of incidents reported annually. While protocols for blood-borne pathogens like HIV and hepatitis viruses are well-established, the risk of traumatic inoculation with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) is under-recognized. METHODS: This case series reviews six separate instances of healthcare and laboratory personnel across multiple academic health systems in a northeastern U.S. metropolitan region who developed cutaneous tuberculosis following sharps inj…
