Body composition changes in haemodialysis patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism after parathyroidectomy measured by conventional and vector bioimpedance analysis.

Considering the negative effects of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), the objective of the present study was to evaluate body composition changes using conventional and vector bioimpedance analysis in patients before and after parathyroidectomy (PTX). Twelve adult patients, mean age 43.4 (sd 12.7) years, were evaluated prior to and 6 months after PTX. Diets were assessed with 3 d dietary records, and mean energy, protein, calcium and phosphorus intake were estimated from these inventories. Weight, height, BMI and bioelectrical impedance were mea

Weight loss as a marker of successful decongestion during acute heart failure hospitalisation.

BACKGROUND: Effective decongestion is a key therapeutic goal during hospitalisation for acute heart failure (HF), but the clinical significance of intravenous loop diuretic-induced weight loss and its relationship with biomarker changes remain uncertain. METHODS: We included patients hospitalised for HF in the nationwide Swedish Heart Failure Registry (2017-2021) who received intravenous loop diuretics, survived to discharge and had body weight recorded at admission and discharge. Weight loss was defined as ≥2 kg between admission and discharge. Associations between weight loss, changes in bi

A Low-Protein High-Fat Diet Leads to Loss of Body Weight and White Adipose Tissue Weight via Enhancing Energy Expenditure in Mice.

Obesity has become a worldwide health problem over the past three decades. During obesity, metabolic dysfunction of white adipose tissue (WAT) is a key factor increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. A variety of diet approaches have been proposed for the prevention and treatment of obesity. The low-protein high-fat diet (LPHF) is a special kind of high-fat diet, characterized by the intake of a low amount of protein, while compared to typical high-fat diet, may induce weight loss and browning of WAT. Physical activity is another effective intervention to treat obesity by reducing WAT mass, ind

Impact of the COVID-19 Lockdown on the Body Composition and Physical Performance of Athletes: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression.

Sporting events were cancelled, and sports training was banned to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These changes during the COVID-19 pandemic decreased the physical activity levels, increased sedentary time, and also impaired the mental health of elite and sub-elite athletes. The impact on body composition and physical performance is not clear, however, especially considering a systematic review with meta-analysis. Thus, our objective was to conduct a review in accordance with the PRISMA Statement studies published in scientific journals (PubMed, Web of Science, or Scopus databases) that invest

Replacing dietary carbohydrate with protein and fat improves lipoprotein subclass profile and liver fat in type 2 diabetes independent of body weight: evidence from 2 randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia with elevated concentrations of triacylglycerol-rich lipoproteins (TRLs), small-dense LDL, and reduced HDL is linked to hepatic steatosis and promotes atherogenesis in type 2 diabetes (T2D). OBJECTIVES: We aimed to analyze whether moderate carbohydrate restriction reduces liver fat in T2D independent of changes in body weight and whether this is accompanied by parallel improvements in plasma lipoprotein subclasses. METHODS: We determined the density profile of circulating lipoproteins in patients with T2D from 2 previous randomized controlled trials. In the isoenerge

Pharmacokinetics of drugs in cachectic patients: a systematic review.

Cachexia is a weight-loss process caused by an underlying chronic disease such as cancer, chronic heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or rheumatoid arthritis. It leads to changes in body structure and function that may influence the pharmacokinetics of drugs. Changes in gut function and decreased subcutaneous tissue may influence the absorption of orally and transdermally applied drugs. Altered body composition and plasma protein concentration may affect drug distribution. Changes in the expression and function of metabolic enzymes could influence the metabolism of drugs, and

Causal effects of time-varying body size on selected autoimmune disorders: a life course Mendelian randomisation study.

BACKGROUND: Based on Barker's hypothesis, some studies investigated the associations between birth weight and several disorders. Apart from issues with statistical power and well-known shortcomings of the observational study design, there are no studies accounting for changes in weight-related body size over the life course regarding rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and multiple sclerosis. METHODS: Using genetic information of up to 806 834 participants, this study investigated the associations between time-varying weight-related body size from birth to adulthood and the m

The role of ovarian hormone dynamics in metabolic phenotype and gene expression in female mice.

Ovarian hormones, particularly estradiol, play an important role in the regulation of metabolic function including in food intake, thermogenesis, activity, fat distribution, and overall weight management. While it is known that weight and food intake follow cyclical patterns across the rodent estrous cycle, the majority of metabolic studies still focus on ovariectomized rodent models and estrogen replacement. Here we provide a comprehensive metabolic profiling of female mice under different ovarian hormone states, from having naturally-cycling ovarian hormone levels to complete ovarian hormone

Effects of voluntary wheel running on appetite-regulating peptides and neuroinflammation in the hypothalamus of ovariectomized middle-aged mice.

The postmenopausal period is associated with an increased tendency to gain weight. This may be due to disturbances in appetite regulation, mainly in the hypothalamus and nutritional behaviors, as well as persistent neuroinflammation resulting from estrogen deficiency. Research indicates that physical activity may counteract estrogen deficiency by improving hypothalamic regulation of appetite and inflammation, thereby promoting better energy balance and decreasing the risk of weight gain after menopause. We investigated whether voluntary wheel running (VWR) impacts factors related to appetite,

Intestinal absorption and pancreatic function are preserved in anorexia nervosa patients in both a severely malnourished state and after recovery.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterised by a refusal to normal body weight accompanied by a marked restriction of food intake, frequently leading to severe malnutrition. In severe malnutrition and wasting syndromes, mucosal atrophy, altered gastrointestinal motility and pancreatic atrophy, which alter digestive function and can exacerbate malnutrition, have been described. The objective of this work was to determine intestinal absorption and pancreatic function in severely malnourished AN patients before and after recovery. METHODS: Ten severely malnourished AN women were studied

Decreased food efficiency ratio, growth retardation and changes in liver fatty acid composition in rats consuming thermally oxidized and polymerized sunflower oil used for frying.

Changes in food intake, body weight, liver weight, hepatosomatic index and hepatic fatty acid composition were studied in growing male Wistar rats fed a diet containing sunflower oil that had been used repeatedly for frying. During a period of 27 days, the animals were fed semi-synthetic diets containing either 15% used oil with 19.1% polar material (group 2) or 15% unused oils with 5.1% polar material (group 1). Although food intake was similar in both experimental groups, final body weight, body weight gain, food efficiency ratio and protein efficiency ratio were significantly lower in group

[Effects of growth hormone treatment on anthropometrics, metabolic risk, and body composition variables in small for gestational age patients].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Small for gestational age (SGA) children without catch-up growth can benefit from treatment with growth hormone (rhGH). However, they should be monitored very closely because they are at increased risk of metabolic syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A group of 28 SGA children with a mean age of 8.79 years and undergoing treatment with rhGH were selected for evaluation. Over the course of 4 years, an annual evaluation was performed on the anthropometric variables (weight, height, body mass index [BMI], growth rate, blood pressure and waist perimeter), metabolic risk va
