BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) may be a cause of neurogenic pulmonary edema (NPE). It is well known that lymphatic fluid draining … vely common pathology following experimental SAH in rabbits. The NPE is frequently complicated with brain abscess as shown in this study. The pathophysiologic mechanism was concluded, as NPE may be responsible for cerebral abscess development via bacteria/cytotoxic particles conveyed by thoracic duct to lungs and transferred from the ruptured alveoli-capillary …

Neuroimaging plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and therapeutic management of neurologic infections. This article summarizes imaging findings in brain abscesses, ventriculitis, viral diseases, and opportunistic infections. In cases of uncomplicated meningitis, cranial computed tomography is sufficient to exclude brain edema, hydrocephalus, and skull base pathology. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is superior in depicting complications (e.g., empyema, vasculitis). Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) shows parenchymal complications of meningitis earlier and is of help in differentiation of pyog…

Three hundred thirty-five cases of acute mastoiditis with complications due to extension of infection beyond the mastoid are reported. Two hundred twenty-four of those presented with intracranial sepsis. Meningitis occurred in 83 cases, brain abscess in 53, extradural abscess in 49 cases, and lateral sinus thrombosis in 39 cases. Intracranial complications are frequently seen in this group of patients with neglected otitis media. The complications occurred frequently in children and young adults (74%) with an overall mortality rate of 14%. Meningitis was the most common complication (37%); bra…

This review describes the microbiology, and medical management of orbital and intracranial complications of sinusitis in children. The most common complications are orbital cellulitis, subperiosteal abscess, orbital abscess, brain abscess, subdural empyema and meningitis. The predominate organisms recovered from these infection are anaerobic, aerobic, and microaerophilic bacteria of oral flora origin. Establishing the microbiology by obtaining appropriate cultures for both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria are essential for proper antimicrobial selection. Early recognition and appropriate surgica…

BACKGROUND: Invasive liver abscess syndrome (ILAS) caused by hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) is a life-threatening infection associated with high mortality, particularly when complicated by brain abscesses. The emergence of carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (CR-hvKp) during treatment, driven by emerging resistance, poses significant therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 70-year-old diabetic male with recurrent ILAS who developed sequential multi-organ infections, including urinary tract infection, bacteremia, lung abscess, and brain abscess. Initia…

Cerebral tuberculoma of the brain are uncommon presentation of tuberculosis (1%). A 17-year female presented to the emergency with a Glasgow Coma Score of (eye-1, verbal-1 and motor-3), 5/15 bilateral fixed pupils with laborious breathing. The radiological features were suggestive of aintracerebral abscess/ glioma. Intraoperatively the brain was very tense and a large, vascular, mass was present that was excised completely. Her histopathology revealed features of tuberculoma and she was started on anti-tubercular treatment. She is discharged home with regular follow-up for the last 10 months.C

Cerebrovascular accidents and brain abscesses are the most worrisome complications of cyanogenic cardiac lesions in infants and young children, but remain rare in the adult. The authors report the case of a brain abscess which led to the subsequent discovery of a congenital cardiac malformation consisting of a ventricular septal defect and moderate pulmonary valve stenosis. Complete correction of the cardiac lesions was carried out three months after neurosurgical treatment (needle biopsy/drainage).

Four cases of E. histolytica infection of the brain among 80 cases of hepatic amebiasis collected over a period of 18 years are reported. The patients were males aged 2, 30, 40 and 50 years. Three cases presented with chest and neurological manifestations. Intestinal and hepatic lesions were present in all and lung lesions in three cases. The cases with neurological manifestations showed extensive, almost confluent lesions in the brain. It is proposed that the condition should be called "Secondary cerebral amebiasis".

Congenitally corrected transposition of great arteries (CC-TGAs) associated with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) presents with cyanotic spells and systemic complications such as brain abscess. In mesocardia, the heart lies in the midline with no apex seen on the left side. We report the anesthetic management of a child with CC-TGA, VSD, and mesocardia presenting with parietal brain abscess for neurosurgery. The significant anesthetic challenges include maintenance of peripheral vascular resistance lower than systemic vascular resistance, prevention of air embolism and paradoxical embolism, a…

A 3-year-old boy with hepatopulmonary amebiasis treated with chloroquine phosphate for 20 days subsequently was found to have three brain abscesses and responded to prolonged combined therapy with metronidazole and chloroquine phosphate. Cerebral amebiasis should be considered in any patient with amebic dysentery, hepatic abscess, or pulmonary involvement in whom signs or symptoms of central nervous system involvement appear. A prolonged course of appropriate therapy with periodic brain scanning for evidence of improvement is suggested.

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Diabetes and serotype K1 or K2 are risk factors for invasive liver abscess syndrome including liver abscesses and the metastatic complications such as bacteremia, meningitis, endophthalmitis, and necrotizing fasciitis. Simultaneous infections of the liver, lungs, prostate, brain, and eyes are exceedingly rare. In this paper, a 41-year-old male patient who presented with a 4-day history of fever with polydipsia and polyuria and untreated diabetes deteriorated dramatically with sepsis, prostate abscess

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory pseudotumor encompasses a broad range of non-neoplastic and neoplastic entities, including inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs). Because it is a rare mesenchymal tumor of unknown etiology and pathogenesis, and its clinical symptoms and radiologic features are not distinctive, intracranial IMT could be misdiagnosed as other extra-axial tumors. Here, we present a case of intracranial IMT suspected to be a brain abscess.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, a 73-year-old woman presented headaches, nausea, and vertigo. Brain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic reson…

A 58-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with complaints of general fatigue, thirst and lumbago. A diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome was made on the basis of elevated serum levels of cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Although Cushing's disease was most suspected, no evident image of pituitary adenoma could be found on brain CT scan and MRI. Therefore, treatment with oral Trilostane was started. Three months after admission, left hemiplegia was noticed and cerebral abscess in the right frontal lobe was demonstrated by brain CT scan. In spite of surgical removal of the absce

Neurologic manifestations of severe infectious complications of drug abuse and chronic alcoholism are reviewed in this article. Portals of entry from cutaneous postinjection infections and multiple vascular injection sites may lead to pyomyositis, tetanus, infective endocarditis, meningitis, brain abscesses, and vertebral osteomyelitis. Chronic intranasal abuse of cocaine may be followed by frontal osteomyelitis, botulism, brain abscess, and visual loss. Problems of hepatitis, malaria, and syphilis in drug abusers are discussed also.
