Breed-dependent differences in gut microbiota linked to indole and skatole levels in Hezuo and DLY pigs.

BACKGROUD: Indole and skatole are major odorous compounds generated in pig farms and their emissions affect the sustainable development of pig industry seriously. At present, microbial interventions represent an efficient and environmentally sustainable strategy for reducing odor emissions. Research on functional microorganisms specifically targeting indole and skatole emission reduction in pigs remains limited. To compare the concentrations of indole and skatole in Hezuo and DLY pigs, and analysis differences in microbial community characteristics between the two pig breeds, aimed to screen t

Breed-specific microbiomes drive differential responses to 3-nitrooxypropanol and Acacia mearnsii in dairy cows.

Methane (CH4) inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) shows variable efficacy in Brown Swiss (BS) and Holstein (HF) cows, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Rumination bolus, a proxy for rumen microbiota, combined with exhalomics (analysis of exhaled volatiles), offered a noninvasive approach to differentiate breed responses to CH4 mitigation strategies. We investigated whether differences in rumination bolus microbiota and exhaled VFA (eVFA) between BS and HF cows contribute to their responses to 3-NOP. Sixteen multiparous cows (8 BS, 8 HF) were studied in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin squ

Establishment of a physiological reference for embryonic development of three SPF duck breeds compared to SPF chickens.

Specific pathogen free (SPF) duck and chicken embryos serve as essential biological models bridging fundamental developmental biology and biomedical applications. Although morphological staging has been established for SPF ducks, systematic and standardized reference frameworks for their physiological and biochemical characteristics are still lacking. This study aimed to establish a comprehensive and quantitative reference framework for the embryonic development of three SPF duck breeds (HSM, HBW, and HJD) at different developmental stages, using SPF chickens (BM8 line) as a benchmark. By syst

Diagnosis and treatment of infectious endocarditis caused by Paenibacillus lautus in a small-breed dog: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Infectious endocarditis is an uncommon disease in dogs; however, its incidence and survival rates have increased owing to advances in the understanding of the disease and diagnostic techniques. For diagnosis, it is necessary to determine whether a dog suspected of being infected has any abnormalities that meet the modified Duke criteria. Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Escherichia coli are the most commonly isolated bacteria causing infective endocarditis in dogs, whereas the less commonly isolated bacteria include Pseudomonas spp. and Proteus spp. CASE PRESENTATION:

The impact of haplotypes derived from Chinese pigs on genetic variation and economic traits in the Duroc breed.

BACKGROUND: The historical importation of Chinese pigs into Western countries has facilitated the introduction of Chinese haplotypes into European pig breeds, thereby shaping their genetic diversity and phenotypic traits. However, the genetic and biological implications of this introgression remain poorly understood. RESULTS: Based on SNP chip and resequencing data, we confirmed significant genetic introgression from Chinese pigs into commercial European lines. The genetic origins of the introgressed segments predominantly derive from Southern Chinese domestic pigs (CSDP), with additional con

Selection based on the Breeding Soundness Evaluation is associated with the improvement of the reproductive quality of young Nellore bulls.

Breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) is the best methodology to estimate the fertility potential of future bulls and performing indirect selection for their fertility. However, the outcome of the BSE is influenced by several factors, including genetics, environment, and BSE guidelines. Herein, in this retrospective study, our first aim was to characterize the reasons for failure in 46,566 BSE from 2-year-old beef Bos indicus bulls (Nellore) born from 1997 to 2018. Our second aim was to determine whether or not BSE was associated with reproductive potential improvement of the bulls over the year…

ELOVL5 and VLDLR synergistically affect n-3 PUFA deposition in eggs of different chicken breeds.

There was no significant difference in the composition and content of fatty acids in eggs among different breeds initially, but following the supplementation of flaxseed oil, Dwarf Layer were observed to deposit more n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in eggs. Currently, there is limited research on the mechanisms underlying the differences in egg composition among different breeds. Therefore, in this study, 150 twenty-four-wk-old hens of each breed, including the Dwarf Layer and White Leghorn, were fed either a basal diet or a diet supplemented with 2.5% flaxseed oil. After 28 d, eggs and

The beauty of the beast: Suggestions to curb the excesses of dog breeding and restore animal welfare - Invited review.

Dog. Specifically created to save its master's life. - (The dog is the ideal) Friend of man, (because it is his devoted slave) (source: Gustave Flaubert, Dictionnaire des Idées Reçues). But is man the best friend of the dog? This question is legitimate when we consider living situations to which modern domestic dogs are exposed. They often do not satisfy basic animal needs. In this narrative review, the author revisits the history of the dog's presence alongside humans, in the light of current knowledge. The modern dog (breed standards and their interests in canine research) and its breeding s…

Qualitative Exploration of the Hidden Curriculum in Communicating Dog Breed Stereotypes During Veterinary Clinical Training.

Cultural transmission of breed-specific beliefs about canine pain sensitivity occurs during veterinary education and training. However, breed-specific beliefs held by veterinarians do not align well with experimental measures of pain observed across dog breeds and are unlikely to be helpful in clinical decision making. The aim of the present study was to gain a deeper understanding of how dog breed pain stereotypes are developed and/or reinforced during clinical veterinary training. Non-participant, unobtrusive observations were conducted for a single clinical rotation block across three speci

Computed Tomographic Features of Thymus in Dogs: Correlation with Age, Gender, Breed and Body Fat Content.

BACKGROUND: The thymus is the first lymphoid organ formed to regulate a newborn's immunity. It reaches its maximum size during puberty, after which it undergoes an atrophic procedure called involution, but its ability to grow again in response to some stresses, such as infections, neoplasia, surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy is maintained. There is no comprehensive study on computed tomographic features of thymus in dogs. So, the goal of the present study is to gain better insight into the thymus using computed tomography as a non-invasive method. METHODS: One hundred and fifty dogs c
