Dermoscopic detection of nail fold capillary abnormality in patients with systemic sclerosis.

The diagnosis of systemic sclerosis (SSc) is often difficult. The purpose of the present study was to find the distribution of nail fold capillary abnormality in SSc. Sixty-two patients with SSc (male : female = 7:55, age 21-86 years, mean 60.1) admitted to the outpatient clinics were studied. Eighteen age- and sex-matched normal subjects, 28 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 10 with dermatomyositis (DM) were also studied. Nail fold capillary loops were observed under immersion oil at a magnification of ×40 with a light microscope. Dilated capillaries, nail fold bleeding and…

Capillary leak leading to shock in Kawasaki disease without myocardial dysfunction.

Kawasaki disease is an acute vasculitis of childhood. Its clinical presentation is well known, and coronary artery aneurysms are classical complications. Shock and pleural or pericardiac effusion are rare presentations of the disease. In intensive care units, the disease may be mistaken for septic shock or toxic shock syndrome. Owing to the fact that immunoglobulin therapy improves the course of the disease, especially if given early, and thus the diagnosis should not be delayed.

Tear analysis of ascorbic acid, uric acid and malondialdehyde with capillary electrophoresis.

Tears have a significant role in antioxidant defense in ocular tissues and since their collection is quick and noninvasive, their analysis would facilitate monitoring of pathophysiological changes. However, their low volume and low content of antioxidants makes analysis difficult; methods of high sensitivity are needed. In this paper, we present a method for tear analysis of two antioxidant molecules (ascorbic and uric acid) and of a lipid peroxidation indicator (malondialdehyde) with capillary electrophoresis. Tears were collected with Schirmer strips, extracted with a low-pH phosphate buffer

[Idiopathic systemic capillary leak syndrome: a case report with cardiac involvement].

Systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is characterized by recurrent hypovolemic shock associated with edema, hemoconcentration and paradoxal hypoprotidemia due to leakage into the interstitial space. We report a new case with cardiac involvement. A 62-year-old man had two recurrent hypovolemic shocks with SCLS's criteria, associated twice with cardiac systolic dysfunction and atrial fibrillation. This report should enhance physician awareness of SCLS, which is a rare and severe disease, and its cardiac involvement.

Dyshoric capillary cerebral amyloid angiopathy mimicking Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

BACKGROUND: Subjects fulfilling the World Health Organisation clinical diagnostic criteria for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) often have a different diagnosis at autopsy, including Alzheimer's disease. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a common finding in Alzheimer's disease, and in rare cases this is particularly capillary CAA with dyshoric changes. METHODS: Six subjects with extensive capillary CAA with dyshoric changes, in addition to neurofibrillary tangles and in the absence of CJD pathology were found in a consecutive series of 225 clinically suspected CJD cases fulfilling criteria

Spectroscopic noninvasive measurement of hemoglobin compared with capillary and venous values in neonates.

BACKGROUND: Venepuncture-related blood loss is a common cause of neonatal anemia. Currently, this is the only way to obtain hemoglobin levels. This causes distress for the infant but can also lead to the need for blood transfusions. Recently, a new technique for measuring hemoglobin levels non-invasively has been developed to reduce iatrogenic blood loss and pain. OBJECTIVE: To compare hemoglobin levels obtained using a transcutaneous spectroscopic device (Mediscan 2000, MBR Optical Systems, Wuppertal, Germany) with venous or capillary blood samples in neonates. METHODS: Single-center prospe

Impact of elevated pulmonary blood flow and capillary pressure on lung responsiveness.

Since alterations in pulmonary hemodynamics may lead to airway hyperreactivity, the consequences of individual changes in pulmonary blood flow (Qp) and capillary pressure (Pc) on lung responsiveness were investigated. During maintenance of a steady-state Pc of 5, 10, or 15 mmHg (groups 1-3), acute increases of Qp were generated in isolated, perfused rat lungs by simultaneous pulmonary arterial pressure elevation and venous pressure lowering. Conversely, at constant low (groups 4 and 5) or high Qp (groups 6 and 7), Pc was lowered or elevated by changing, in parallel, the pulmonary arterial and

Effects of rosuvastatin on electronegative LDL as characterized by capillary isotachophoresis: the ROSARY Study.

Electronegative LDL, a charge-modified LDL (cm-LDL) subfraction that is more negatively charged than normal LDL, has been shown to be inflammatory. We previously showed that pravastatin and simvastatin reduced the electronegative LDL subfraction, fast-migrating LDL (fLDL), as analyzed by capillary isotachophoresis (cITP). The present study examined the effects of rosuvastatin on the more electronegative LDL subfraction, very-fast-migrating LDL (vfLDL), and small, dense charge-modified LDL (sd-cm-LDL) subfractions. Patients with hypercholesterolemia or those who were being treated with statins

Giant intracranial capillary hemangioma associated with enlarged head circumference in a newborn.

The authors describe the case of a patient with an intracranial capillary hemangioma, and they review the recent literature on intracranial capillary hemangiomas with special attention to their differential diagnosis and management. The only sign in this 7-week-old boy was head enlargement. There were no neurological deficits, and imaging revealed a large intracranial lesion in the right temporal fossa. The results of biopsy confirmed the diagnosis, and, after endovascular embolization, the entire lesion was resected. The incidence of intracranial capillary hemangioma is very low but may be un

Metabolic fingerprinting of Schistosoma mansoni infection in mice urine with capillary electrophoresis.

Schistosoma mansoni infection in mice has been fingerprinted using CE to study the capabilities of this technique as a diagnostic tool for this parasitic disease. Two modes of separation were used in generating the electrophoretic data, with each untreated urine sample the following methods were applied: (i) a fused-silica capillary, operating with an applied potential of 18 kV, in micellar EKC (MEKC) and (ii) a polyacrylamide-coated capillary, operating with an applied potential of -20 kV under zonal CZE conditions. By combining normal and reverse polarities in the data treatment we have extr

Capillary electrophoretic method for the simultaneous determination of tetracycline residues in fish samples.

A capillary electrophoresis (CE) method with UV detection was developed for simultaneous identification and quantitation of three tetracyclines: tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and doxycycline (DC) in fish muscle samples. It was developed by analyzing a series of fish tissue samples containing TCs in different concentrations. The CE method was validated in terms of linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, decision limit (CCalpha), detection capability (CCbeta), precision and accuracy for investigated TCs. The limits of detection (LODs) estimated in the range 1.3-1.8 ng/g, while the limits

Capillary electrophoresis for the detection of PMP22 gene duplication: study in Mexican patients.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common inherited disorder of the human peripheral nerve, with an estimated overall prevalence of 17-40/10 000 [1]. The typical phenotype presents peroneal muscular atrophy and pes cavus [2]. CMT is usually divided into two large types, about two-thirds of the patients have CMT type 1 (CMT1), that affects the layer of myelin (demyelination). In type 2 (CMT2) the nerve fibers are affected (axonal). CMT diseases have autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and X-linked inheritance [1]. The most frequent subtype is 1A (CMT1A) with autosomal dominant t

Two cases of systemic capillary leak syndrome that were treated with pentastarch.

Systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a condition that's caused by the shift of fluid and protein from the intravascular space to the interstitial space as a result of repetitive episodes of capillary hyperpermeability. The pathogenesis of SCLS is still unclear, but there's recently been a report showing this syndrome in association with monoclonal gammopathy. This syndrome can be a fatal disease because cardiovascular collapse can occur in the initial capillary leak phase. Although theophylline, diuretics, terbutaline, steroids, calcium antagonist, Ginkgo biloba extracts and plasmapheres

[Recent advances in enantiomeric separation of chiral environmental pollutants by capillary electrophoresis].

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is an effective analytical tool in chiral separation. This review article is focused on the major developments in the recent applications of CE to the enantioseparation of the chiral environmental pollutants in the past decade. Developments are classified according to the types of chiral pollutants, i. e. phenoxyalkanoic acid herbicides, organophosphorus/organochlorine/pyrethroid pesticides, triazole fungicides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The advances in enantiomeric separation of the above-mentioned chiral pollutants by CE are reviewed. In addition, the e

Differential expression of capillary VEGF isoforms following traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVES: While it is known that angiogenesis occurs after trauma, we sought to characterize the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) subtypes, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) and angiopoietin within capillaries of animals subjected to traumatic brain injury (TBI). Further, we sought to characterize pericyte cell death in isolated capillaries. METHODS: We used Marmarou's acceleration impact model to induce head trauma and measured VEGF, VEGFR2 and angiopoietin levels in isolated capillaries. TUNEL was used to determine pericyte cell death. RESULTS:…

Neuroimaging findings in macrocephaly-capillary malformation: a longitudinal study of 17 patients.

Here, we report the neuroimaging findings and neurological changes in 17 unpublished patients with Macrocephaly-Capillary Malformation (M-CM). This syndrome has been traditionally known as Macrocephaly-Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (M-CMTC), but we explain why M-CM is a more accurate term for this overgrowth syndrome. We analyzed the 17 patients with available brain MRI or CT scans and compared their findings with features identified by a comprehensive review of published cases. White matter irregularities with increased signal on T2-weighted images were commonly observed findings.
