Candida parapsilosis is a significant neonatal pathogen: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Candida is the third most common cause of late-onset neonatal sepsis in infants born at <1500 g. Candida parapsilosis infections are increasingly reported in preterm neonates in association with indwelling catheters. METHODS: We systematically reviewed neonatal literature and synthesized data pertaining to percentage of C. parapsilosis infections and mortality by meta-analyses. We also reviewed risk factors, virulence determinants, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and outlined clinical management strategies. RESULTS: C. parapsilosis infections comprised 33.47% (95% confidenc

Candida orthopsilosis fungemias in a Spanish tertiary care hospital: incidence, epidemiology and antifungal susceptibility.

BACKGROUND: Few studies exist on prevalence of fungemia by Candida orthopsilosis, with variable results. AIMS: To study the incidence, epidemiology and antifungal susceptibility of C. orthopsilosis strains isolated from fungemias over two years at a tertiary hospital. METHODS: Candidemia episodes between June 2007 and June 2009 in a university hospital (Puerta del Mar, Cádiz, Spain) were studied. The strains initially identified as Candida parapsilosis were genotypically screened for C. parapsilosis sensu stricto, C. orthopsilosis and Candida metapsilosis, and their antifungal susceptibility

Multidrug-resistant endemic clonal strain of Candida auris in India.

Candida auris is a recently described rare agent of fungemia. It is notable for its antifungal resistance. A total of 15 C. auris isolates, originating from seven cases of fungemia, three cases of diabetic gangrenous foot, and one case of bronchopneumonia from a tertiary care hospital in south India, were investigated. All of the 15 isolates were identified by sequencing and 14 of these along with 12 C. auris isolates previously reported from two hospitals in Delhi, north India, two each from Japan and Korea were genotyped by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). In vitro antifungal s

Zygomycosis in Europe: analysis of 230 cases accrued by the registry of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) Working Group on Zygomycosis between 2005 and 2007.

Zygomycosis is an important emerging fungal infection, associated with high morbidity and mortality. The Working Group on Zygomycosis of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) prospectively collected cases of proven and probable zygomycosis in 13 European countries occurring between 2005 and 2007. Cases were recorded by a standardized case report form, entered into an electronic database and analysed descriptively and by logistic regression analysis. During the study period, 230 cases fulfilled pre-set criteria for eligibility. The median age of the patients was 50 years (range,

Isolation of Candida auris from invasive and non-invasive samples of a patient suffering from vascular disease, Italy, July 2019.

We recently isolated Candida auris from a blood culture and cutaneous swabs of a patient in her mid-70s. Our routine phenotypic methods failed to identify the microorganism, but it was identified by molecular tests and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. Our report, the first from Italy, further underlines the geographically wide distribution of C. auris and the need to confirm species identification of any suspicious colony as soon as possible to stop its spread.

Synergistic Effect of Essential Oils and Antifungal Agents in Fighting Resistant Clinical Isolates of Candida auris.

Recently, a large number of nosocomial infections have been caused by an emerging pathogen that is rising as a worldwide issue in human health: Candida auris. This yeast is considered resistant to antifungals of the first-line therapies, and consequently it is related to morbidity and mortality. Therefore, the aim of this research was to determine the in vitro anti-C. auris activity against twenty-three resistant clinical strains of different essential oils (EOs), pure or in combination with traditional antifungal agents, mainly caspofungin, fluconazole, micafungin and 5-flucytosine. Comparative evaluation of Sensititre YeastOne and CLSI M38-Ed3 reference method for determining echinocandin minimum effective concentrations against Aspergillus isolates.

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of echinocandins against Aspergillus spp. does not represent the actual inhibition threshold of echinocandins. Therefore, the recommended method to evaluate their activity is determining the minimum effective concentration (MEC) in broth microdilution, a method that is less common in clinical settings. This study aimed to assess a user-friendly commercial method, Sensititre YeastOne (SYO), to determine the effectiveness of echinocandins (caspofungin, anidulafungin and micafungin) against Aspergillus spp. Echinocandins MEC was determined against 23 iso

Candida auris Identification and Rapid Antifungal Susceptibility Testing Against Echinocandins by MALDI-TOF MS.

Candida auris was first reported in an ear swab from Japan in 2009; it then promptly spread over five continents and turned into a global nosocomial problem. The main challenges faced by many researchers are the mis-identification by conventional methods in clinical laboratories and failure in treatment. About 90% of C. auris strains are intrinsically resistant to fluconazole (FLU), and it is developing resistance to multiple classes of available antifungals. Echinocandins are the most potent class of antifungals against C. auris; however, reduced susceptibility to one or many echinocandin dru
