Increasing Occurrence of Marburg Virus Outbreaks in Africa: Risk Assessment for Public Health.

In this millennium, Marburgvirus (MARV) outbreaks with very high mortality but still small case numbers (< 400) were observed with increasing frequency in Africa. Ecologists identified Egyptian Rousettus bats (ERB) as viral reservoir species causing occasional zoonotic spillover events, mostly in humans intruding into their cave habitats as miners or tourists. So far only short human-to-human transmission chains have been documented. ERB can be experimentally infected with MARV but show no clinical signs. MARV transmission is inefficient among adult bats and occurs mostly between older juvenil

In silico exploration of phytochemicals as inhibitors for acute myeloid leukemia by targeting LIN28A gene: A cheminformatics study.

BACKGROUND: Recent discoveries have illustrated that Lin28A is an oncogene in various cancers, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The upregulation of Lin28A can actively contribute to tumorigenesis and migration processes in multiple organs. Hence, the inhibition of Lin28A can be achieved by applying phytochemical herbals and targeting Lin28A protein using a computer-aided drug design (CAAD) approach. METHODS: In this study, we comprehensively applied several bioinformatics tools, including gene ontologies, gene enrichment analysis, and protein-protein interactions (PPI), to determine

The feasibility and clinical outcome of endoscopic transorbital transcavernous approaches with or without petrosectomy for petroclival lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Petroclival tumors such as petroclival meningiomas or trigeminal schwannomas extending to the posterior cranial fossa are challenging to treat due to their deep-seated location and proximity to critical neurovascular structures. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and clinical outcomes of endoscopic transorbital surgery for the resection of central skull base tumors involving the petroclival area. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of 32 patients with petroclival tumors including meningiomas and trigeminal schwannomas who underwent endoscopic

Effect of wet clothing removal on skin temperature in subjects exposed to cold and wrapped in a vapor barrier: a human, randomized, crossover field study.

BACKGROUND: Prehospital care for cold-stressed and hypothermic patients focuses on effective insulation and rewarming. When encountering patients wearing wet clothing, rescuers can either remove the wet clothing before isolating the patient or isolate the patient using a vapor barrier. Wet clothing removal increases skin exposure but avoids the need to heat the wet clothing during rewarming. Leaving wet clothing on will avoid skin exposure but is likely to increase heat loss during rewarming. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of wet clothing removal compared to containing the moisture us

Cranial neurolymphomatosis and its oncologic counterparts: Case series on malignant cranial nerve neuropathies.

Neurolymphomatosis occurs due to the infiltration of a nerve by malignant cells. Cranial neurolymphomatosis is a rare disease process associated with non-solid tumors (i.e., lymphoma, leukemia, etc.). Cranial neurolymphomatosis presents with single or multifocal neuropathy. Primary cranial neurolymphomatosis is defined as the initial presenting symptom leading to a new diagnosis of cancer. Secondary cranial neurolymphomatosis is defined as cancer progression with spread to a cranial nerve. While cranial neurolymphomatosis is a recognized cause of cranial nerve neuropathies, a myriad of other m

Application of morphological characteristics of radiofrequency lesions to individual parameters of thermal rhizolysis for trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Thermic rhizolysis is a reliable therapy for pharmaco-resistant trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Temperature, duration of electrocautery and needle location can influence the efficacy and complications of the therapy. METHODS: We performed experimental thermocautery on egg white with increasing parameters of time (30-120 s) and temperature (60-95°C); we analysed the shape, size and volume of the thermic lesions produced. We developed a surgical procedure to assess peroperatively the probable thermocoagulation field and its geometric relations with the trigeminal roots and other anatomic

Endoscopic anatomy of the pterygopalatine fossa and the transpterygoid approach: development of a surgical instruction model.

INTRODUCTION: The pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) is a narrow space located between the posterior wall of the antrum and the pterygoid plates. Surgical access to the PPF is difficult because of its protected position and its complex neurovascular anatomy. Endonasal approaches using rod lens endoscopes, however, provide better visualization of this area and are associated with less morbidity than external approaches. Our aim was to develop a simple anatomical model using cadaveric specimens injected with intravascular colored silicone to demonstrate the endoscopic anatomy of the PPF. This model cou

Aleya cavernae gen. nov., sp. nov., and Lacrimispora cavernae sp. nov., novel taxa isolated from bat guano.

Bats, of the order Chiroptera, comprise over 1,400 species and account for over 21% of all currently described mammalian species. However, despite this huge group of mammals, a remarkably small number of bacterial species have been described from this group. In a continuing study of non-human mammals, dozens of strains were isolated from anaerobic guano-pile enrichments collected in a bat cave near Protem, MO, USA. Of these, two novel taxa were identified and designated BS-2T and BS-20T; both were rod-shaped, Gram-stain-positive bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and phylogen

Genomic and biological characterization of a novel bacteriophage X1 infecting Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris with biocontrol potential against cabbage black rot.

Bacteriophages have emerged as promising alternatives to pesticides for controlling bacterial pathogens in crops. Black rot, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc), is one of the most destructive bacterial diseases affecting cruciferous crops worldwide. In this study, a novel lytic bacteriophage, X1, infecting Xcc 8004, was isolated from sediment collected in an oligotrophic karst cave. Phage X1 formed clear plaques and exhibited myovirus-like morphology with an icosahedral head and a contractile tail. Biological characterization revealed productive infection of the tested Xcc s

Biportal Endoscopic Transorbital Approach with an Accessory Lateral Orbital Port for Anterior Petrosal Corridor : A Cadaveric Feasibility Study [Seven-004].

OBJECTIVE: The anterior transpetrosal approach (ATPA) is one of the useful methods for targeting the middle clival and ventrolateral pontine areas. Thanks to the advances in endoscopic skull base surgery, there have been increased attempts to perform anterior petrosectomy via the endoscopic transorbital approach (ETOA), although some limitations and drawbacks have also been suggested. This study aimed to analyze the contribution of the endoscopic biportal transorbital technique to anterior petrosectomy. METHODS: A total of ten cadaveric heads (twenty sides) were dissected at the Surgical Neur

Biportal Endoscopic TransOrbital and transMaxillary Approach to the Cranio-Orbital Region and Middle Cranial Fossa: A Preliminary Analysis of Maneuverability.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traditional and well-established transcranial approaches to the spheno-orbital region and middle cranial fossa guarantee optimal intracranial exposure, and additional orbital and zygomatic osteotomies provide further control over extracranial components to be resected; however, these techniques come at the cost of additional morbidity. The introduction of minimally invasive endoscopic approaches and the conceptualization of the so-called "multiportal" paradigm might provide an alternative route. This preliminary study investigates the feasibility of the combined Bipo

Trigeminal Neuralgia-Step-by-Step DYNA-Computed Tomography-Assisted Balloon Compression Rhizotomy.

Trigeminal nerve balloon compression (TNBC)1-3 can provide immediate therapeutic relief to patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia. This is a particularly effective treatment option for patients who are not eligible for surgical procedures (i.e., elderly patients or patients with multiple comorbidities) or for patients who have had an insufficient response to microvascular decompression. TNBC can also be used as a bridge treatment before stereotactic radiosurgery. Use of intraoperative computed tomography-like images using a C-arm system (DYNA-CT) imaging facilitates the TNBC procedure.4,

Effect of subacromial erosion shape on rotator cuff and clinical outcomes after hook plate fixation in type 5 acromioclavicular joint dislocations: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical fixation using hook plates is widely used in the treatment of acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence and shape of subacromial erosions after removal of the hook plate in type 5 AC joint dislocations. Further, we evaluated the effect of the shape of the subacromial erosion on the rotator cuff. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 30 patients who underwent hook plate fixation for type 5 AC joint dislocations at our hospital between December 2010 and December 2018. Patients with a follow-up of at least 1 year were i

Developmental evolution and developmental plasticity of the olfactory epithelium and olfactory skills in Mexican cavefish.

The fish Astyanax mexicanus comes in two forms: the normal surface-dwelling (SF) and the blind depigmented cave-adapted (CF) morphs. Among many phenotypic differences, cavefish show enhanced olfactory sensitivity to detect amino-acid odors and they possess large olfactory sensory organs. Here, we questioned the relationship between the size of the olfactory organ and olfactory capacities. Comparing olfactory detection abilities of CF, SF and F1 hybrids with various olfactory epithelium (OE) sizes in behavioral tests, we concluded that OE size is not the only factor involved. Other possibilitie

Macroprolactinoma causing VI, X, XII cranial nerve palsies nearly 30 years after initial treatment.

UNLABELLED: A 48-year-old man was diagnosed with a large macroprolactinoma in 1982 treated with surgery, adjuvant radiotherapy and bromocriptine. Normal prolactin was achieved in 2005 but in 2009 it started rising. Pituitary MRIs in 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2015 were reported as showing empty pituitary fossa. Prolactin continued to increase (despite increasing bromocriptine dose). Trialling cabergoline had no effect (prolactin 191,380 mU/L). In January 2016, he presented with right facial weakness and CT head was reported as showing no acute intracranial abnormality. In late 2016, he was referred
