OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study aims to investigate the effect of the type of atlantoaxial dislocation due to os odontoideum on the sagittal alignment and balance of the cervical spine after posterior atlantoaxial fusion.
METHODS: Data of 48 consecutive patients who underwent posterior C1-C2 fusion to treat atlantoaxial dislocation/instability due to os odontoideum were retrospectively reviewed. Radiographic variables, namely the T1 slope (T1S), C1-C2 angle, C2-C7 angle, C1-C2 sagittal vertical axis (SVA), C2-C7 SVA, and modified atlas-dens interval (MADI), were measured preoperatively, i

PURPOSE: Adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix is the second most common type of cervical cancer after squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Although both subtypes are treated similarly, patients with adenocarcinoma have a worse prognosis. In this study, immunologic features of the tumor microenvironment in these two subsets were pursued with potential therapeutic implications.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: The immune microenvironment of primary tumors and nonmetastatic tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLN) was compared between patients with cervical adenocarcinoma (n = 16) and SCC (n = 20) by polychromatic flow

BACKGROUND: Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy results from spine degenerations narrowing the spinal canal and inducing cord compressions. Prognosis is challenging. This study aimed at simulating typical spinal cord compressions observed in patients with a realistic model to better understand pathogenesis for later prediction of patients' evolution.
METHODS: A 30% reduction in cord cross-sectional area at C5-C6 was defined as myelopathy threshold based on Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy features from literature and MRI measurements in 20 patients. Four main compression types were extracted fro

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to verify the value of computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of the "crowned dens" syndrome, not only in crystal deposition diseases, but also in other rheumatic or nonrheumatic conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight patients (15 men and 23 women; mean age 55 years; age range 35-79) with neck pain were examined and divided into two groups: (1) patients already identified as rheumatic and referred for further investigation of the atlantoaxial region; (2) patients with symptoms confined to the cervical spine, with inconclusive radiographic fin

Cervical angina is defined as a paroxysmal precordialgia that resembles true cardiac angina caused by cervical spondylosis. Cervical angina most commonly results from compression of the C7 ventral root. We present here a case of cervical angina caused by atlantoaxial instability. This case had marked atlantoaxial instability but no flexibility of the middle to lower levels of the cervical spine. Although there was mild C7 root compression on the radiologic findings, the chest pain was induced by neck motion, and the precordialgia disappeared after posterior atlantoaxial fusion without C7 root

PURPOSE: To compare digital X-ray, CT, and MRI in the evaluation of ligamentous and osseous lesions in upper cervical spine specimens after artificial craniocervical injury with the findings of macroscopic preparation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A rotation trauma of defined severity was applied to 19 human corpses. After dissection of the neck specimens, digital X-ray (DIMA Soft P41, Feinfocus), conventional and helical CT (CTi, High Speed, GE, collimation 1 mm; pitch 1.0), and MRI were performed from the skull base to C3. The findings were correlated with the macroscopic results of preparation.

STUDY DESIGN: The cervical spine of an 86-year-old man known to have a fracture of the odontoid process was removed at autopsy and dissected.
OBJECTIVES: To establish the cause of death, which was not apparent.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Ruptures of the vertebral arteries in patients with fractures of the odontoid process are rare. Only a few reports are published in the literature. Those that address postmortem findings in patients with fractures of the odontoid process do not make any reference to associated capsular and ligamentous injuries and the resultant instabilities.

A 59-year-old man suffered from progressive muscular weakness and sensory loss of both upper limbs for seven years. Neurological examination revealed vest-form sensory loss of all modalities from the level of C3 to Th2 on both sides together with muscular weakness and atrophy of the upper limbs in predominantly proximal distribution. Deep tendon reflexes were generally hyperactive except for the left biceps brachii. Based on these neurological manifestations, a clinical diagnosis of syringomyelic syndrome was made. The plain X-ray showed anomalies of the craniovertebral junction; occipitalizat

Neglected instabilities or luxations of the upper cervical spine in children are rare if one discards conditions such as chondrodysplasia, Down Syndrome or others, were the spine is known to be at high risk of instability. We have studied twenty cases of neglected luxations and the delay in diagnosis is explained either by the asymptomatic character of some of these lesions, or by the difficulty in diagnosis. At the occipito-atlantal level we have reviewed: an instability in translation which required an occipito-axial fusion; two compensatory counter occipito-atlantal luxation of an atlanto-a

Up to 56 million young and adult women of African origin suffer from Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS). The transmission of schistosomiasis happens through contact with schistosomiasis infested fresh water in rivers and lakes. The transmission vector is the snail that releases immature worms capable of penetrating the human skin. The worm then matures and mates in the blood vessels and deposits its eggs in tissues, causing urogenital disease. There is currently no gold standard for FGS diagnosis. Reliable diagnostics are challenging due to the lack of appropriate instruments and clinical sk

The cervix is the lowermost part of the uterus that connects to the vagina, and cervical cancer is a malignant cervix tumour. One of this cancer's most important risk factors is HPV infection. In the approach to finding an effective treatment for this disease, various works have been done around genomics and drug discovery. Finding the major altered genes was one of the most significant studies completed in the field of cervical cancer by TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas), and these genes are TGFBR2, MED1, ERBB3, CASP8, and HLA-A. The greatest genomic alterations were found in the PI3K/MAPK and T

We describe the multidisciplinary findings in a pre-Columbian mummy head from Southern Peru (Cahuachi, Nazca civilisation, radiocarbon dating between 120 and 750 AD) of a mature male individual (40-60 years) with the first two vertebrae attached in pathological position. Accordingly, the atlanto-axial transition (C1/C2) was significantly rotated and dislocated at 38° angle associated with a bulging brownish mass that considerably reduced the spinal canal by circa 60%. Using surface microscopy, endoscopy, high-resolution multi-slice computer tomography, paleohistology and immunohistochemistry,

Objectives Bow hunter's stroke (BHS) is a condition characterized by temporary vertebrobasilar insufficiency caused by mechanical compression or occlusion of the vertebral artery when the head is rotated, leading to transient neurological symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, nystagmus, dysarthria, and potentially stroke. Therefore, a situation in which the head remains rotated for an extended period is a significant risk factor for BHS. Materials and Methods We present a case of a 25-year-old woman who experienced three recurrent cerebral infarctions in the posterior circulation area after sle

PURPOSE: KBD is an endemic disease affecting the epiphyseal growth plate and articular cartilage of multiple joints, resulting in extremities' deformation and skeletal dysplasia. More attention has been paid to the visible deformed extremities instead of inconspicuous spinal condition. There is a lack of reports concerning the spinal radiological features, especially for the atlantoaxial joint. The aim of this paper is to report a case of a Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) patient diagnosed with atlantoaxial subluxation, concomitant with separated odontoid process fused to the enlarged anterior arch

Several variations of the bony and vascular anatomy around the first and second cervical vertebrae have been reported. Failure to recognise these variations can complicate operations on the upper cervical spine. We present a patient with recent onset of cervical myelopathy due to stenosis at the C3-4 level. Preoperative evaluation identified Klippel-Feil syndrome with cervical fusion of C2-3, aplasia of posterior arch of C1, anomalous vertebral artery course and a "ponticulus posticus" of C2. The combination of these variations in a Klippel-Feil syndrome patient has never been reported. Thus,

The aim of the study was to consider Kimmerle anomaly (ponticulus posterior of the atlas) as an anatomic variant, which can cause a set of clinical symptoms and signs. A hundred and eight patients, 58 females and 50 males at the age of 18-59 years (M. 36.9 years, SD = 9.6) with radiologically verified Kimmerle anomaly were examined. A control group comprised 40 healthy subjects at the similar age range. The diagnosis of headaches was based on the criteria proposed by the IHS. A character of headaches, their localization, frequency, duration, number of days with headaches per year, circumstance

Mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma (MLA) was introduced as a new tumor type in the endometrium and the ovary in the 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification. This is a rare recently described (2016) and clinically aggressive carcinoma with a propensity for distant spread, especially to the lungs. MLA has a characteristic morphology and immunophenotype (hormone receptor negative; TTF1 and/or GATA3 positive). These neoplasms are commonly associated with KRAS and PIK3CA mutations and in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) molecular classification of endometrial carcinomas fall into the copy nu

Complex Chiari malformation (CCM) is a spectrum of congenital bony and soft tissue abnormalities, which includes Chiari 1.5 malformation, medullary kinking, retroflexed odontoid, abnormal clival-cervical angle (CXA), occipitalization of the atlas, basilar invagination, syringomyelia, and scoliosis. CCM usually manifests in the pediatric age group and is a challenging entity to treat. It requires detailed evaluation of craniometric indices to decide the appropriate surgical management. Patients with maximum perpendicular distance of dens to the line from the basion to the inferoposterior part o
