Magnitude Comparisons, Number Knowledge and Calculation in VeryPreterm Children and Children With Specific Learning Disability: A Cross-Population Study Using Eye-Tracking.

Difficulties in mathematics have been described in very preterm children, but their origins are not well understood and may differ from other populations with specific learning disability. Very preterm children, children with learning disability, and typically developing children were compared in mathematics skills, using standardized tools, experimental tasks, and eye-tracker measures. We assessed symbolic and nonsymbolic magnitude comparisons, number knowledge, calculation, as well as cognitive skills of 103 Italian-speaking fourth and fifth graders. Compared to typically developing peers, v

A study of base frequency in Spanish skilled and reading-disabled children: all children benefit from morphological processing in defining complex pseudowords.

In this study, the base frequency (BF) effect is explored in reading-disabled and skilled readers of Spanish. A pseudoword definition task was completed by two groups of children. The pseudowords were composed from existing stems and affixes. The results show a facilitatory BF effect, suggesting that all children benefited from this aspect of morphology. A significant effect of group was also observed, showing that skilled readers scored better than reading-disabled children. The interaction between these variables was not significant. The overall pattern of data suggests that all children ben

Questionnaires that assess disability in children and adolescents with low back pain adhere to the concepts of the International classification of functioning, disability and health (ICF), but lack validity for this population: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: We aimed to identify Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) that assess disability in children and adolescents with low back pain (LBP), analyzing their adherence to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) biopsychosocial model; and to describe the measurement properties of these PROMs. METHODS: We searched Pubmed, Embase and CINAHL databases. The review included searches up to March 2022. Meaningful concepts of the PROMs were linked to ICF domains, and we manually searched for the measurement properties of each included PROM. RESULTS: We incl

Handgrip strength and physical workload as key risk factors for low back pain in mothers of children with physical and intellectual disabilities: A post-COVID-19 study.

BackgroundMothers raising children with disabilities may experience low back pain (LBP) due to depressive symptoms, physical workload (PW), and muscle weakness. Handgrip strength (HGS), a marker of total body muscular strength, is a controversial topic; however, its relationship with LBP in this population remains unclear and unexamined.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate LBP in mothers of children with physical and intellectual disabilities and its correlations with depression, physical workload, history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), handgrip strength, and socio-economic factor…

Child oral health and preventive dental service access among children with intellectual disabilities, autism and other educational additional support needs: A population-based record linkage cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Inequalities in child oral health are a global challenge and the intersection of socioeconomic factors with educational additional support needs (ASN), including children with intellectual disabilities or autism, have thus far received limited attention in relatively small clinical studies. We aimed to address this evidence gap by investigating oral health and access to preventive dental services among children with ASN compared to the general child population. METHODS: Cohort study linking data from six Scotland-wide health and education databases compared: dental caries experienc

Intensive Interaction for children and young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (INTERACT): study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial, economic evaluation and process evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Communication interventions can facilitate communication between people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) and familiar partners such as family and educational setting staff, including speech and language therapists. Various communication interventions are routinely used but their clinical and cost-effectiveness are unclear. Intensive Interaction (II) is one intervention that focuses on early interaction abilities. II can be delivered by staff in educational settings and/or at home. Despite many settings already implementing II, staff are sometimes untrained or

Relationships between Translation and Transcription Processes during fMRI Connectivity Scanning and Coded Translation and Transcription in Writing Products after Scanning in Children with and without Transcription Disabilities.

Students with transcription disabilities (dysgraphia/impaired handwriting, n = 13 or dyslexia/impaired word spelling, n = 16) or without transcription disabilities (controls) completed transcription and translation (idea generating, planning, and creating) writing tasks during fMRI connectivity scanning and compositions after scanning, which were coded for transcription and translation variables. Compositions in both groups showed diversity in genre beyond usual narrative-expository distinction; groups differed in coded transcription but not translation variables. For the control group specifi

Impact of soil lead on children's urinary levels and parent-reported learning disabilities in areas of diffuse contamination.

Children's lead exposure has declined with the phasing out of leaded gasoline, while second order Pb sources, such as contaminated soils, have become more prevalent. Lead remains a pollutant of concern in contaminated urban and post-industrial areas, where legacy diffuse soil contamination levels are deemed acceptable with current soil management policies. However, the contribution of soil Pb, particularly its bioaccessible fraction, to children's internal Pb dose remains insufficiently characterized in these settings. This study investigates chronic Pb exposure in 172 children (6-11 years) li

What Are the Important Health and Well-Being Outcome Dimensions for Parent Carers of Disabled Children? A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are used to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, particularly for subjective health states such as well-being. A parent carer is an adult primary caregiver for a child with a disability. Parent carers are at risk of poorer mental and physical health; targeted health promotion interventions are being developed, requiring evaluation. This study aimed to identify the important health and well-being outcomes for parent carers for evaluating parent carer-focused interventions. METHODS: We recruited parents of children with special educa

Differences in the Psychopharmacological Trajectories of School-Age Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder with and without Intellectual Disability.

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects 5% - 7% of school-aged children, while intellectual disability (IDD) affects approximately 1% of the general population. Diagnosing and treating ADHD in individuals with IDD is challenging, not only due to communication difficulties but also because of psychiatric comorbidities that may be present. These factors can result in underdiagnosis of ADHD and increased prescribing of other psychotropic medications. The aim of this study was to determine differences in psychopharmacological treatment (number of prescribed psychostim

Deciphering the genetic basis of developmental language disorder in children without intellectual disability, autism or apraxia of speech.

BACKGROUND: Developmental language disorder (DLD) refers to children who present with language difficulties that are not due to a known biomedical condition or associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or intellectual disability (ID). The clinical heterogeneity of language disorders, the frequent presence of comorbidities, and the inconsistent terminology used over the years have impeded both research and clinical practice. Identifying sub-groups of children (i.e. DLD cases without childhood apraxia of speech (CAS)) with language difficulties is essential for elucidating the underlying ge

Pure Neuritic Leprosy In Children With Grade 2 Disability On Hands And Feet: A Rare Case And Literature Review.

Pure neuritic leprosy (PNL) is a rare clinical variant of leprosy, especially in children. This variant of leprosy only involves peripheral nerves without skin involvement or acid-fast bacilli (AFB) found on slit-skin smear examination. The challenging diagnosis and establishment of PNL due to the absence of skin lesions often lead to disability. A case of PNL with grade 2 disability of hands and feet in a 16-year-old boy was reported. The patient has been living in a leprosy-endemic area and has a history of contact with people who have symptoms of leprosy. On physical examination, there were

The effect of transcranial alternating current stimulation on cognitive flexibility and attention of children with intellectual disability: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual disability is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant impairments in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. Cognitive flexibility and attention are crucial cognitive domains often affected in children with intellectual disability. This case report explores the novel use of transcranial alternating current stimulation, a noninvasive brain stimulation technique, to enhance these cognitive functions. The study's novelty lies in its focus on alpha-wave frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation targeting specific Brodmann areas and i
