Response of rice production to rising CO2 and its adaptive cultivation strategies.

Rice is the staple food for more than half of the population in China. Therefore, enhancing the grain yield of rice is the core of ensuring food security. In recent decades, the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration generally increases the photosynthetic rate of rice and then the rice yield. This phenomenon is generally termed the CO2 fertilization effect (CFE), which plays a pivotal role in sustaining global rice yield in the context of climate change. In order to accurately understand the impact of elevated CO2 on rice productivity and yield, this study first presents th

Early outbreak detection in endemic settings using a novel method applied to sparse Rift Valley fever incidence data.

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic disease often linked to climatic factors. However, identifying the onset and duration of outbreaks can be hindered by high numbers of zero counts in sparse surveillance data. We analyzed monthly RVF data from Kenya (2015-2022), compared the performance of widely used outbreak-detection methods, and developed Negative Binomial models augmented with a hidden Markov process and zero-inflation to address data sparsity. Our proposed framework estimates monthly probabilities of transitioning between endemic and epidemic phases, improving outbreak

Drivers for Rift Valley fever emergence in Mayotte: A Bayesian modelling approach.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a major zoonotic and arboviral hemorrhagic fever. The conditions leading to RVF epidemics are still unclear, and the relative role of climatic and anthropogenic factors may vary between ecosystems. Here, we estimate the most likely scenario that led to RVF emergence on the island of Mayotte, following the 2006-2007 African epidemic. We developed the first mathematical model for RVF that accounts for climate, animal imports and livestock susceptibility, which is fitted to a 12-years dataset. RVF emergence was found to be triggered by the import of infectious animals,

Parallel prediction of dengue cases with different risks in Mexico using an artificial neural network model considering meteorological data.

In 2022, Mexico registered an increase in dengue cases compared to the previous year. On the other hand, the amount of precipitation reported annually was slightly less than the previous year. Similarly, the minimum-mean-maximum temperatures recorded annually were below the previous year. In the literature, it is possible to find studies focused on the spread of dengue only for some specific regions of Mexico. However, given the increase in the number of cases during 2022 in regions not considered by previously published works, this study covers cases reported in all states of the country. On

Respond to urban floods and groundwater depletion: A managed aquifer recharge approach to alleviate urban water challenges.

Climate change, rapid urbanization and increasing impervious surfaces influence urban flooding and groundwater depletion in developing cities, leading to chronic water scarcity and posing a severe threat to urban water security. These challenges can be addressed through integrated water management strategies that enhance infiltration and aquifer recharge. This study evaluates the application of Aquifer Storage Transfer and Recovery (ASTR) as a Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) approach by repurposing 23 abandoned wells to inject stormwater during peak rainfall events. A 5-year, 6-h design storm,

Transferability and uncertainty of landfill methane models in hot arid and hyper-arid environments: a critical review with an Arabian Gulf evidence-gap analysis.

Landfills are a major and, in several settings, growing source of methane, and many widely used operational- and inventory-scale estimates rely on first-order decay (FOD) models whose default parameterizations are largely underpinned by North American and European datasets. Whether these models transfer reliably to hot arid and hyper-arid systems-and specifically to the Arabian Gulf-remains unresolved. This critical review examines that question through a structured descriptive synthesis and an evidence-gap analysis for the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The provenance analysis sho

Lifetime urban exposure, socioeconomic position and respiratory health among adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Early-life exposure to urban environmental factors, including air pollution, greenness or climate-related factors, is suspected to be associated with respiratory health but evidence among adolescents is scarce. We estimated the association between early-life exposure to urban factors and respiratory health among adolescents and addressed whether the socioeconomic position (SEP) could modify these associations. METHODS: This study was based on 3731 mother-child pairs from the HELIX and Generation R cohorts with 29 exposures from 6 domains (air pollution, built environment, natura

Elevation-dependent classification of outdoor thermal stress in a tropical Andean country: a case study of Colombia.

Outdoor thermal comfort in tropical mountain countries is shaped by air temperature, humidity, wind, solar radiation and topography, with elevation strongly controlling thermal stress (TS). This study evaluates how elevation modulates outdoor TS in Colombia and proposes an elevation-based thermal stress level (TSL) classification. Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) datasets from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) were used to compute four thermal indices: Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), Effective Temperature (ETv), Thermo-Hygrometric Index (THI) and the national heat index (I

A degree day model for predicting voltinism of the invasive balsam woolly adelgid (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) in northern Utah.

Balsam woolly adelgid, Adelges piceae (Ratz.) (BWA), invasive in North America, was first detected on subalpine fir [Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.] in several northern Utah counties in 2017. BWA phenology is known to vary by elevation and climate; a degree-day (DD) model focused on population expansion into the Intermountain West is needed. Bark samples were collected weekly from infested subalpine fir in early summer through late fall at 5 northern Utah sites from August 2020 to December 2022. At a single site, additional samples were collected biweekly to monthly during winter and spring. T

High resolution physically based modelling reveals malaria incidence reduction by vector control measures.

Malaria continues to cause over 600,000 deaths annually in sub-Saharan Africa, disproportionately affecting children under five. Despite sustained control efforts, transmission remains highly sensitive to local environmental and climatic variability, underscoring the need for physically grounded models capable of capturing these dynamics. To address this challenge, we developed a high-resolution hybrid modeling framework linking WRF/WRF-Hydro and VECTRI. The framework integrates atmospheric, hydrological, ecological, and intervention processes at 1 km and 50 m resolutions and includes a new co

Ecological Niche Modeling Identifies Fine-Scale Areas at High Risk of Dengue Fever in the Pearl River Delta, China.

Dengue fever (DF) is one of the most common and rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral diseases in tropical and subtropical regions. In recent years, this imported disease has posed a serious threat to public health in China, especially in the Pearl River Delta (PRD). Although the severity of DF outbreaks in the PRD is generally associated with known risk factors, fine scale assessments of areas at high risk for DF outbreaks are limited. We built five ecological niche models to identify such areas including a variety of climatic, environmental, and socioeconomic variables, as well as, in some

A convolutional neural network prediction model for aviation nitrogen oxides emissions throughout all flight phases.

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of research on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, and the environmental impact of aviation NOx emissions at cruising altitudes has received widespread attention. NOx may play a crucial role in altering the composition of the atmosphere, particularly regarding ozone formation in the upper troposphere. At present, the ground emission database based on the landing and takeoff (LTO) cycle is more comprehensive, while high-altitude emission data is scarce due to the prohibitively high cost and the inevitable measurement uncertainty associated with

A machine learning approach to integrating genetic and ecological data in tsetse flies (Glossina pallidipes) for spatially explicit vector control planning.

Vector control is an effective strategy for reducing vector-borne disease transmission, but requires knowledge of vector habitat use and dispersal patterns. Our goal was to improve this knowledge for the tsetse species Glossina pallidipes, a vector of human and animal African trypanosomiasis, which are diseases that pose serious health and socioeconomic burdens across sub-Saharan Africa. We used random forest regression to (i) build and integrate models of G. pallidipes habitat suitability and genetic connectivity across Kenya and northern Tanzania and (ii) provide novel vector control recomme

An integrated dual-model framework for microplastic flux estimation and source apportionment in tropical island river systems.

Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a major global environmental concern, with rivers serving as a key pathway transporting land-based MPs to the ocean. However, river-to-ocean MP fluxes and their sources in tropical island river systems remain poorly understood due to limited hydrological observations and heterogeneous human activities. To address this gap, this study applied two complementary approaches for flux estimation, including a runoff-based model and a socioeconomic-driven model, and constructed a composite-feature source library integrating multiple MP characteristics from represent

Grounding pesticide use intensity and hazards with real-world data: Toward correcting global models in tropical agriculture.

Global pesticide use is increasing, especially in low- and lower-middle-income countries, posing threats to non-target organisms, ecosystems, and people. However, data on pesticide use globally and within nations are often low quality, lacking fine-grained data, including specific active ingredients used, which constrains the accurate calculation of hazards and risk assessments associated with pesticide use practices. The geographic differentiation of these shortcomings suggests that the agricultural patterns in the global South, especially in the tropics, are generally misrepresented. Here, w

Life Cycle Perspective-Based Modeling Assessment of Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement.

The removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere via ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is proposed and discussed to mitigate climate change. We modeled the life cycles of four types of OAE technologies (ocean liming, accelerated weathering of limestone, mineral carbonation-ocean liming, and coastal enhanced weathering) in an Earth system model and investigated their environmental impacts. When the OAE is simulated to operate from the year 2030 to 2099 in 12 different coastal areas, the carbon emissions generated from the OAE's mining, processing, transportation, and dumping can significantly

Modelling the fate of Hollow Glass Microspheres deployed for Arctic sea ice albedo modification.

Loss of sea ice is both a response to climate change and a driver of further warming, due to the lower albedo of open water. Covering strategic areas of Arctic sea ice with a thin layer of Hollow Glass Microspheres (HGMs) has been proposed as an intervention to slow, or even reverse, loss of ice. Toxicological studies have identified effect limits for HGMs in both pelagic and benthic species. The current study provides context for those toxicological studies, by estimating environmental concentrations if HGMs are deployed as suggested. Two different models were used, a vertical-dimension water

Interacting climatic drivers of dengue incidence: a GARMA-based time series analysis in a Brazilian health region.

Dengue is a major public health challenge in Brazil, with significant temporal variability and seasonal outbreaks. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the disease in a Brazilian health region, using a generalised autoregressive moving average (GARMA) model, based on the negative binomial distribution, to monthly case counts from 2014 to 2025. Climate covariates such as precipitation, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, temperature, and wind speed, were considered to determine both individual and joint effects on dengue transmission. The results indicate a nonlinear temporal tren

Revisiting the determinants of CO2 emissions: The role of higher education under the extended STIRPAT model.

This study directly aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), i.e., SDG-13 and SDG-4. Carbon emissions (CO2e) are primarily addressed under SDG-13: Climate Action, which aims to combat climate change and its impacts. CO2e reduction efforts contribute to achieving this goal by mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. SDG 4: Quality Education aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all. It emphasizes explicitly lifelong learning opportunities and targets higher education (HE) access to improve skills for sustainable development. Therefore, the current study aims to exami
