No Safe Place: A Qualitative Examination of Minority Stress Experiences Among 2SLGBTQ+ Individuals in the Waterloo Region.

The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of socio-ecological stressors impacting 2S/LGBTQ+ individuals in the Waterloo Region in Ontario, Canada in the new wave of anti-queer rhetoric. Data was collected from semi-structured interviews with 2S/LGBTQ+ community members (N = 30) in the Waterloo Region. Braun & Clarke's six-step process of thematic analysis was employed. Minority stress theory was used to assess how socio-ecological factors (e.g., structural discrimination) contribute to manifestations of minority stress and how this health shapes health and well-being. Participant

Synthetic biology development of microbial strains for liquid biofuel production.

As a renewable energy source, biofuels can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and effectively lower greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating the global climate change issue. The production of liquid biofuels primarily relies on the biosynthetic processes of microorganisms. While many natural strains possess specific metabolic capabilities to produce liquid biofuels, their performance often fails to meet the demands of industrial-scale production. Therefore, genetic engineering to construct strains with optimized metabolic pathways has become an inevitable approach. Synthetic biology technology has

Proteomic responses under differing pH and pCO2 levels in the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana are consistent with a hybrid carbon-concentrating mechanism.

The effects of ongoing anthropogenic climate change are not well known in marine diatoms, a key group of primary producers. Specifically, detailed characterizations of their carbon-concentrating mechanisms (CCMs) are lacking, which limits the understanding of how changing ocean carbonate chemistry will impact global primary production. While the model diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana has been widely studied, contrasting results have prevented the clear elucidation of its CCM. A quantitative proteomic analysis was therefore performed across three experimental treatments (low pCO2/high pH, high p

Effects of van der Waals Interaction on N2 Adsorption on Carbon Nanotubes: Proposal for New Force Field Parameters.

The separation of carbon dioxide (CO2) from nitrogen gas (N2) in flue gas has become an emerging strategy to mitigate climate change. Molecular simulations are valuable to provide insights for the gas separation process. A careful choice of force fields is required to avoid unrealistic predictions of thermodynamic properties. Most studies use Lorentz-Berthelot combining rules (LB) to obtain the interaction between different species. In this context, we verified how accurate LB is in describing the interaction of N2 molecules and carbon nanostructures by comparing the interaction energies of LB

INSIG1 parallel substitution drives lipid/sterol metabolic plasticity mediating desert adaptation in ungulates.

Desert ungulates, such as Camelus bactrianus and Hippotraginae antelopes, exhibit extraordinary adaptation to extreme environment. Deciphering these genetic adaptations is critical for understanding evolutionary resilience under climate change. Here, we generate a chromosome-level genome for domestic Bactrian camel and integrate comparative genomics analyses to uncover genomic adaptation in arid-desert ungulates. We find elevated molecular evolution rates with intensified positive selection among desert-adapted lineages. Convergent positively selected genes are mainly involved in energy metabo

Synergistic regulation of abiotic stress adaptation by copper miRNAs miR398 and miR408 in melon.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) in general and miR398 and miR408 in particular have emerged as key regulators of plant adaptation to individual stress, yet their roles regulating the crop response to diverse unfavorable environments remain poorly explored. Here, we report transgenic melon (Cucumis melo) plants overexpressing miR398 and miR408 precursors, two conserved miRNAs involved in copper-related regulatory pathways and associated with stress response. Engineered plants exhibited enhanced vegetative development, including stem elongation, internode formation, root architecture, and leaf production. Th

Impact of atmospheric electrical charges on ryegrass pollen rupture and sub-pollen particle release.

Thunderstorm asthma (TA) is a significant health concern, recorded in 26 instances globally, primarily linked to ryegrass pollen. Existing research has shown that physical forces such as wind and rain can cause pollen to rupture during thunderstorms, creating micronic, inhalable allergen-rich fragments called sub-pollen particles (SPPs). However, little is known about the role of electrical charges in storm clouds, such as those associated with lightning, in triggering pollen rupture. This study presents the first simulation-based evidence that the static electric fields typical of storm cloud

Modeling the effects of vector species composition and temperature on the risk of dengue virus.

The risk of vector-borne disease is highly dependent on the local community composition of hosts and vectors, as well as the means by which disease is introduced into a susceptible population. The mosquito species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are both vectors of dengue virus, but differ in their biting preferences and ability to transmit the disease. The two species compete for habitat at the larval stage and their spatial distributions are highly heterogeneous, due in part to variability in factors such as temperature and resource quality affecting the outcome of competition and the res

Understanding the Mechanism of Electrochemical CO2 Capture by Supercapacitive Swing Adsorption.

Carbon dioxide capture underpins an important range of technologies that can help to mitigate climate change. Improved carbon capture technologies that are driven by electrochemistry are under active development, and it was recently found that supercapacitor energy storage devices can reversibly capture and release carbon dioxide. So-called supercapacitive swing adsorption (SSA) has several advantages over traditional carbon dioxide capture technologies such as lower energy consumption and the use of nontoxic materials. However, the mechanism for the capture of CO2 in these devices is poorly u

Unveiling the Overlooked Inhibitory Effects of Carbon Dioxide on Photochemical Nitrate Decomposition over Photoactive Mineral Dust.

Carbon emissions lead to an increased greenhouse gas concentration, which, in turn, affects air quality by altering the global climate. Despite its importance, the direct relationship between carbon emissions and the atmospheric reactive nitrogen cycle has been poorly understood. This study provides an in-depth investigation of the effects of CO2 on the photochemical transformation of nitrates on mineral dust. The results show that CO2 inhibits the photochemical transformation of nitrate under simulated solar irradiation. Specifically, the NOx production rate from nitrate photolysis with CO2 w

Winter Dust Storms Impact the Physical and Biogeochemical Functioning of a Large High Arctic Lake.

We found that a winter of abnormally low snowfall and numerous dust storms from eolian processes acting on exposed landscapes (including a major 4-day dust storm while onsite in May 2014) caused a cascade of impacts on the physical, chemical, and ecological functioning of the largest lake by volume in the High Arctic (Lake Hazen; Nunavut, Canada). MODIS imagery revealed that dust deposited in snowpacks on the lake's ice acted as light-absorbing impurities (LAIs), reducing surface reflectance and increasing surface temperatures relative to normal snowpack years, causing early snowmelt and drain

Psychosocial impact of climatotherapy in young patients with psoriasis: a 3-month cohort study.

Ultraviolet rays are known to have positive effect on psoriasis, but the cold climate and latitude in Northern Europe reduce access to the sun. Climatotherapy is a treatment modality where the patient is relocated to a warmer region with a high ultraviolet (UV) index. Young patients with psoriasis can be particularly burdened by the disease, and studies have shown an association between psoriasis and mood disorders. Patients who have undergone climatotherapy often report beneficial psychological effects after treatment, but this has not yet been studied. To explore the psychosocial impact of c

Diagnostics of IgE-mediated occupational allergies: Between reality, requirements, and opportunities.

Occupational skin and respiratory allergies are among the most common occupational diseases in Germany. The identification of the allergy trigger is essential for the recognition of an occupational allergy as well as for effective individual prevention. However, occupational type I allergens are among the "rare" allergens and the possibilities of guideline-compliant diagnosis using quality-tested skin test solutions is becoming increasingly difficult due to the reduction in commercially available test allergens. In order to guarantee meaningful diagnostic workup for all affected insured person

How Histone Acetyltransferases Shape Plant Photomorphogenesis and UV Response.

Higher plants have developed complex mechanisms to adapt to fluctuating environmental conditions with light playing a vital role in photosynthesis and influencing various developmental processes, including photomorphogenesis. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause cellular damage, necessitating effective DNA repair mechanisms. Histone acetyltransferases (HATs) play a crucial role in regulating chromatin structure and gene expression, thereby contributing to the repair mechanisms. HATs facilitate chromatin relaxation, enabling transcriptional activation necessary for plant development

[Summary of the S1 guideline on sustainability in intensive care and emergency medicine].

BACKGROUND: Man-made climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the future. The course is being set in the current generation. As the healthcare sector contributes a considerable proportion of greenhouse gas emissions, measures to counteract this must be introduced as a matter of urgency. A guideline is therefore necessary as an initial recommendation for action in the intensive care and emergency medicine sector. METHODS: As part of the guideline program of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF e. V.), an S1 guideline was developed with the participati

Novel approach to water-efficient bulk industrial textile printing production of cotton fabric.

Water scarcity poses a global threat in climate change era, and regrettably, the textile processing industry is squandering a significant volume of water during bulk production. This research focused on a sustainable water-saving approach in the printing of cotton fabric by modifying the reactive printing recipe and methodology. Three modified recipes (X, Y, Z) and one controlled recipe (C) were tested using reactive dyes. The conventional reactive printing recipe (Control) includes sodium alginate, urea, mild oxidizing agent, and sodium bicarbonate. In contrast, the modified recipe trials inc

Scrub typhus in Northeast India: epidemiology, clinical presentations, and diagnostic approaches.

Scrub typhus is one of the most neglected tropical diseases, a leading cause of acute undifferentiated febrile illness in areas of the 'tsutsugamushi triangle', diagnosed frequently in South Asian countries. The bacteria Orientia tsutsugamushi is the causative agent of the disease, which enters the human body through the bite of trombiculid mites (also known as chiggers) of the genus Leptotrombidium deliense. Diagnosis of the disease is challenging, as its early symptoms mimic other febrile illnesses like dengue, influenza and corona viruses. Lack of rapid, reliable and cost-effective diagnost

Restoration of Vegetation Greenness and Possible Changes in Mature Forest Communities in Two Forests Damaged by the Vaia Storm in Northern Italy.

Windstorms are rare in the Southern Alps, but their frequency is increasing due to climate change. This research analyzed the vegetation of two spruce forests in Camonica Valley (Northern Italy) destroyed by the Vaia storm to evaluate the vegetation responses to blowdown damage. In each study area, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used to evaluate the change in plant cover and greenness from 2018 (before the Vaia storm) to 2021. Furthermore, floristic-vegetation data were analyzed to identify current plant communities and develop models of plant succession. The results sho

Comparing the spreading characteristics of monkeypox (MPX) and COVID-19: Insights from a quantitative model.

Climate change is acknowledged to directly affect not only the environment, economy, and society but also the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, thereby impacting public health. The recent experiences with the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and Monkeypox have highlighted the complex and interconnected nature of infectious diseases, which are strongly linked to various determinants of health. Considering these challenges, adopting a new vision such as the trans-disciplinary approach appears to be imperative. This paper proposes a new theory about viruses' spread, based on a biological model, a
