Pupil dilation as an index of episodic processing when remembering, imagining, and thinking creatively.

Prior research indicates that the cognitive and neural systems supporting the recall of specific past experiences (episodic memory) also play a key role in imagining novel and specific future experiences (episodic simulation), and divergent creative thinking. In particular, constructive memory processes (e.g. retrieval and recombination of specific episodic details) are thought to benefit episodic simulation and divergent thinking. In the current study, we provide a novel test of this hypothesis using eye-tracking. We capitalized on prior eye-tracking and neuroimaging evidence demonstrating th

What behavioral relevance is (not).

We are thankful for the thoughtful commentaries of our colleagues. In our discussion article, we argued for a course correction to how the field approaches the organization of visual function in occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) - one that moves us away from the dominant framework of category-selectivity towards a more ethological one centered on behavioral relevance. Some of the commentaries raised important issues regarding how our proposed framework does (or does not) contrast with category-selectivity. Other commentaries made helpful suggestions for how behavioral relevance can be studied. As

Understanding the role of the frontal lobe in tool-use tasks: how much does it represent domain-general rather than domain-specific contribution?

When using novel tools with low semantic content, the left inferior-frontal-gyrus (IFG) plays a role. We argue that this activation is not purely specific to novel tool use but rather represents part of a cross-domain cognitive network supporting sequential planning processes. The IFG does not only manage information flow between distributed areas but functionally contributes by maintaining focus on the intended target state and supporting the processing, monitoring, and adjustment of steps needed to achieve that goal. These cognitive functions are particularly important when compensation for

Facial distortions as a critical test for models of the organization of visual function.

Ritchie et al. propose a novel framework for understanding the organization of visual function in the occipitotemporal cortex (OTC). We argue that neuropsychological evidence from individuals with prosopometamorphopsia (PMO), a condition in which faces appear distorted, offers a unique opportunity to test models of OTC. Drawing on findings from a large-scale experiment that used naturalistic stimuli with five individuals with PMO, we show that distortions in two cases appear to be face-specific. These results highlight the value of integrating neuropsychological, computational, and behavioral

In defense of categories.

Ritchie et al. (this issue) argue that the complex landscape of selectivity in the human occipitotemporal cortex is better understood in terms of behavioral relevance than in terms of category. At the descriptive level, their suggestion is obviously very powerful because it allows to describe almost any type of selectivity that is found. Yet, it does not seem to suffice to explain the selectivity and its properties. Categories still play a crucial role in clarifying the functional organization of object representations in the brain, including the tuning for dimensions and the relationship to b

Rethinking category selectivity: insights from the macaque inferior temporal cortex.

Ritchie et al. argue that the traditional framework of category selectivity has limited value for understanding the organization of the ventral visual stream and propose shifting focus toward behavioral relevance and examining vision under naturalistic task conditions. While I agree with many of their points, I expand on their discussion of category selectivity, as well as the drivers of ventral stream organization, from a nonhuman primate perspective.

Visual input statistics and behavioral relevance jointly constrain higher visual cortex organization.

Ritchie and colleagues propose that the functional organization of higher visual cortex is best understood through the lens of behavioral relevance, advocating for a shift away from theories that center around category selectivity. Building on this, I suggest the statistical structure of visual inputs acts as an additional critical constraint on visual cortex, and that a complete understanding of visual system organization must account for input statistics and how they interact with behavioral relevance. I discuss this using cortical food selectivity as a case study, and additionally describe

Seeking cognitive and neural specificity in occipitotemporal cortex.

Studies in our field have often operated under an implicit assumption that the purpose of visual processing is categorization. I argue that our reliance on univariate category-selectivity has diverted attention from behaviorally critical dimensions, such as individuation, which are best captured in multivariate patterns. Category-focused localizers suppress within-category variability, masking signals at the level of individuals, exemplars, and items. By shifting the emphasis from univariate activation to multivariate discriminability, we can better align neural measures with the cognitive dem

Relational properties as a source of variation for object representation in OTC.

The category selectivity model has shaped our understanding of the organization of object-related information in the occipitotemporal visual cortex (OTC). Ritchie et al. propose that OTC represents objects depending on the properties that are behaviorally relevant in a specific task/context, rather than by encoding the invariant visual properties to determine category membership. We consider this proposal in the context of recent developments that have extended the function of vision (and OTC) beyond object recognition, to include a representation of how objects relate to each other, a key pie

Bidirectionality and the application of the integrated neurocognitive model of technological cognition to late life cognitive health.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs) are a pressing public health concern worldwide, and there is a need for innovative strategies to understand and address its impact. The integrated neurocognitive model introduced by Federico et al. (2025) integrates neural systems with everyday technology use and offers valuable implications for ADRD prevention, detection, and care. Future validation of the model could clarify mechanisms of resilience for late life cognitive health and inform clinical detection and intervention.

Category selectivity as a window into behavioral relevance.

Ritchie et al. (this issue) argue that a deeper understanding of occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) requires shifting emphasis from category selectivity to behavioral relevance. They suggest that focusing on categories such as faces, bodies, or scenes is too narrow and overlooks how OTC supports flexible, goal-directed behavior. We agree that linking neural representations to behavior is essential but caution against treating category selectivity and behavioral relevance as opposing views. Category selectivity provides valuable insight into how cortical representations are organized to support beha

Spatiotemporal dynamics of selective attention and visual conflict monitoring using a Stroop task.

Selective attention and conflict monitoring are daily human phenomena, yet the spatial and temporal neurological underpinnings of these processes are not fully understood. Current literature suggests these executive functions occur via diverse and highly interconnected neural networks, including top-down, bottom-up, and conflict-control loops. To investigate the spatiotemporal activity of these processes, we collected neuromagnetic data using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in 28 healthy adults (age 19-36), while they performed a computerized Stroop task based on color naming. We focused on low-f

Causal investigation of mid-frontal theta activity in memory guided visual search.

Midfrontal theta activity is crucial for attentional and cognitive control. However, its causal role in facilitating visual search, particularly from the perspective of distractor inhibition, is yet to be discovered. We applied theta band transcranial alternate current stimulation (tACS) over frontocentral regions when participants searched for targets among heterogeneous distractors with foreknowledge of distractor features. The results demonstrated improved visual search performance in the theta stimulation group compared to the active sham group. Moreover, we observed the facilitation effec

Within-session repeated transcranial direct current stimulation of the posterior parietal cortex enhances spatial working memory.

Spatial working memory (SWM) is an essential cognitive ability that supports complex tasks, but its capacity is limited. Studies using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have shown potential benefits for SWM performance. Recent studies have shown that repeated short applications of tDCS affected corticospinal excitability. Moreover, neuroimaging studies have indicated that the pattern of neural activity measured in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) tracks SWM ability. It is unknown whether repeated tDCS can enhance SWM and whether varied tDCS protocols (single 10 min tDCS, 10 min

Structural variation within the left globus pallidus is associated with task-switching, not stimulus updating or distractor filtering.

Cognitive control is a pivotal aspect of cognition and it is impaired in many clinical populations. To date, several distinct types of cognitive control have been proposed, and prior work demonstrated the instrumental role of basal ganglia, frontal and parietal regions. However, the role of the structural variation of these regions in cognitive control functions is poorly understood. Here, we examined in 39 adults the association between regional brain volume and three major types of cognitive control: (i) stimulus updating, (ii) task-switching, and (iii) distractor filtering. The volume of th

An implicit neural familiar face identity recognition response across widely variable natural views in the human brain.

Highly variable natural images of the same familiar face celebrity interleaved periodically in a rapid (6 images/second) train of unfamiliar faces automatically elicit an objective electroencephalographic (EEG) response over the occipito-temporal cortex of neurotypical human adults within a few minutes. However, the extent to which this frequency-tagged response goes beyond the association of common physical features of the periodically repeated face identity remains unknown. Here we compare participants who know or do not know the very same periodically repeated face celebrity and show that l

The contribution of the left inferior frontal gyrus in affective processing of social groups.

We investigated the contribution of the pars opercularis of the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFGop) in representing knowledge about social groups. We asked healthy individuals to categorize words preceded by semantically congruent or incongruent primes while stimulating the LIFGop. Previous studies showing an involvement of the LIFGop both in processing social stimuli and negative valence words led us to predict that its stimulation would affect responses to negative social category words. Compared to the Vertex as control site, the stimulation of the LIFGop increased the speed of categorizat

Continuous and discrete representations of feature-based attentional priority in human frontoparietal network.

Previous studies suggest that human frontoparietal network represents feature-based attentional priority, yet the precise nature of the priority signals remains unclear. Here, we examined whether priority signals vary continuously or discretely as a function of feature similarity. In an fMRI experiment, we presented two superimposed dot fields moving along two linear directions (leftward and rightward) while varying the angular separation between the two directions. Subjects were cued to attend to one of the two dot fields and respond to a possible speed-up in the cued direction. We used multi

Role of the dorsal attention network in distracter suppression based on features.

Selective attention allows us to prioritize the processing of relevant information and filter out irrelevant information. Human functional neuroimaging and lesion-based studies have highlighted the fronto-parietal dorsal attention network (DAN) as an important network in this process. In this study, we investigated the role of the DAN in distracter suppression by dynamically modifying the priority of visual information (target > high priority distracter > low priority distracter) based on features only. To this end, we collected fMRI data in 24 healthy subjects, who performed a feature-based v

Individual differences in sensory sensitivity: Further lessons from an Autism model.

In this commentary, we join Ward (this issue) in the usefulness of conceptualizing neural output in terms of signal and noise relationships, to create the missing links between neural, behavioral and subjective sensory sensitivity. We draw from our work in the Intense World Theory of Autism and the valproic acid rodent model, to complement the discussion with the consideration of developmental time and function of the system, for a neural output to serve as a predictor of atypical outcome in sensory sensitivity, and guide personalized therapies.
