Climate variability, animal reservoir and transmission of scrub typhus in Southern China.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the relationships between climate variability, animal reservoirs and scrub typhus incidence in Southern China. METHODS: We obtained data on scrub typhus cases in Guangzhou every month from 2006 to 2014 from the Chinese communicable disease network. Time-series Poisson regression models and distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNM) were used to evaluate the relationship between risk factors and scrub typhus. RESULTS: Wavelet analysis found the incidence of scrub typhus cycled with a period of approximately 8-12 months and long-term trends with a period of approx

Management of infections in hospital employees.

Hospital employees are often exposed to infectious diseases, both within and outside of the hospital. Susceptible personnel are at risk of acquiring infection and are a possible source of infection for patients, other employees and members of their households. In recent years epidemics in hospitals due to rubella, pertussis, hepatitis B and Legionnaires' disease have included infection transmitted to and from personnel. A comprehensive plan for management of hospital personnel exposed to communicable diseases should include the following: (1) protocols for the management of each of the common

Estimating undetected Ebola spillovers.

The preparedness of health systems to detect, treat, and prevent onward transmission of Ebola virus disease (EVD) is central to mitigating future outbreaks. Early detection of outbreaks is critical to timely response, but estimating detection rates is difficult because unreported spillover events and outbreaks do not generate data. Using three independent datasets available on the distributions of secondary infections during EVD outbreaks across West Africa, in a single district (Western Area) of Sierra Leone, and in the city of Conakry, Guinea, we simulated realistic outbreak size distributio

[Effect of control interventions for intestinal nematodiasis in areas with low prevalence in Changzhou City].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of control interventions for intestinal nematodiasis in areas with low prevalence, so as to explorethe effective measures for the control of intestinal nematode infections in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China. METHODS: The residents in Wujin, Jintan, Tianning districts were selected as monitor subjects and the infections of intestinal nematodes were investigated with Kato-Katz technique or the transparent tape anal swab method. The results were analyzed statistically and the cost-effectiveness was also analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 26 966 people were i

[Marburg haemorrhagic fever in Angola, 2005].

The current outbreak of Marburg haemorrhagic fever (MHF) in Angola is the largest recorded to date. The article provides an overview of MHF, including historical and clinical aspects, and summarises the status of the present outbreak. Until now, the main components of the public health response in Angola have been effective diagnosis and isolation of patients and contacts, and implementation of hygiene procedures by health workers at local health facilities. Involvement of the local community still constitutes the main challenge for successful control of MHF in Angola.

Increased rhinovirus/enterovirus infections including Ev-D68 in the United States, a challenge for healthcare providers amidst influenza virus infection and the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, WHO declared SARS-CoV-2 a global pandemic and lockdowns were enforced in most of the United States. Self-protective measures and travel restrictions were implemented, and schools/universities initiated online learning. Consequently, the global incidence and hospitalization rates of seasonal respiratory infections decreased significantly up to early 2021. Despite the decrease in hospitalization rates due to respiratory illnesses other than Covid-19, hospitals and healthcare providers faced huge stressors regarding workload dueto the pandemic. Furthermore, higher vaccination rates

Perceptions of capacity for infectious disease control and prevention to meet the challenges of dengue fever in the face of climate change: A survey among CDC staff in Guangdong Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is an important climate-sensitive mosquito-borne viral disease that poses a risk to half the world's population. The disease is a major public health issue in China where in 2014 a major outbreak occurred in Guangdong Province. This study aims to gauge health professionals' perceptions about the capacity of infectious disease control and prevention to meet the challenge of dengue fever in the face of climate change in Guangdong Province, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was administered among staff in the Centers for Disease Control and Preventio

Noble goals, unforeseen consequences: control of tropical diseases in colonial Central Africa and the iatrogenic transmission of blood-borne viruses.

BACKGROUND: In southern Cameroon, 40-50% of individuals born before 1945 have antibodies against hepatitis C virus (HCV), suggesting massive iatrogenic transmission of at least one blood-borne virus in the region of the world where SIV(cpz) emerged into HIV-1. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the potential role of disease control programs that used intravenous (IV) drugs in the transmission of blood-borne viruses, especially HCV. Methods We reviewed, for 1921-1959, records of health services in Cameroun, Oubangui-Chari, Gabon and Moyen-Congo. We calculated the incidence of diseases whose treatment requ

Prime-boost immunization strategies for infectious diseases.

New vaccination strategies that induce the cellular arm of the immune response are needed for the development of effective prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines against a number of intracellular pathogens. DNA vaccines, recombinant viral vectors and recombinant proteins are all effective antigen delivery systems for inducing cellular immunity; however, when used alone, the levels of specific responses they induce are low. Prime-boost immunization strategies involve using two different vaccines, each encoding the same antigen, some weeks apart. Such strategies have been shown to enhance cellula

Limiting potential infectious risks of transplanting insulin-producing pig cells into humans.

AIMS: Prior to commencing a study of grafting foetal/neonatal pig islet-like cell clusters into type I diabetic human subjects, the microbiological risks of transplanting porcine pancreatic tissue were assessed. METHODS: An exclusion list for screening donor animals and graft tissue in Australia was compiled following evaluation of the disease risks posed by 121 organisms, including 36 bacteria, 12 fungi, four mycoplasma, 31 parasites and 38 viruses. The list of evaluated agents was derived from the literature, interviews with veterinarians and physicians, and a survey of laboratories. RESUL

Incidence of infectious disease and the licensure of immunobiologics in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to investigate the relationship of vaccine or toxoid licensure with the incidence of the target disease in the United States. METHODS: We used a historical correlational study design with outcome measures of the national incidence and elimination rate of polio, pertussis, diphtheria, and measles as well as the New York City incidence and elimination rate of mumps, rubella, and tetanus. RESULTS: The licensure of pertussis, measles, polio, mumps, and rubella vaccine was followed by an increase in the elimination rate of disease. The elimination rates of diphther

The public and domestic domains in the transmission of disease.

This paper discusses the distinction between the transmission of infectious diseases within the domestic domain (the area normally occupied by and under the control of a household) and that in the public domain, which includes public places of work, schooling, commerce and recreation as well as the streets and fields. Whereas transmission in the public domain can allow a single case to cause a large epidemic, transmission in the domestic domain is less dramatic and often ignored, although it may account for a substantial number of cases. Statistical methods are available to estimate the relati
