Community health awareness of diabetes (CHAD): description of a community-wide diabetes awareness demonstration program and its feasibility.

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the Community Health Awareness Diabetes (CHAD) program and its feasibility. Developing and testing the feasibility of strategies to detect diabetes in the community is an important primary care issue. The CHAD program was designed to be a feasible and reproducible, low-cost community program to identify high-risk individuals for subsequent diabetes screening by their family doctors. METHODS: Participants from Grimsby, Ontario, older than age 40, were invited to self-risk-assess for diabetes using a validated questionnaire and 2 near-patient blood tests (capil

A comparison of risk factors associated with community-associated methicillin-resistant and -susceptible Staphylococcus aureus infections in remote communities.

In this case-control study, cases [community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA), n=79] and controls [community-associated methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (CA-MSSA), n=36] were defined as a laboratory-confirmed infection in a patient with no previous hospital-associated factors. Skin and soft tissue were the predominant sites of infection, both for cases (67.1%) and controls (55.6%). Most of the cases (79.7%) and controls (77.8%) were aged <30 years. Investigations did not reveal any significant statistical differences in acquiring a CA-MRSA or CA-MSSA infection.

Epidemiology and clinical features of community-acquired, healthcare-associated and nosocomial bloodstream infections in tertiary-care and community hospitals.

Classification of bloodstream infections (BSIs) as community-acquired (CA), healthcare-associated (HCA) and hospital-acquired (HA) has been proposed. The epidemiology and clinical features of BSI according to that classification in tertiary-care (TH) and community (CH) hospitals were investigated in a prospective cohort of 821 BSI episodes from 15 hospitals (ten TH and five CH hospitals) in Andalucía, Spain. Eighteen percent were CA, 24% were HCA and 58% were HA. The incidence of CA and HCA BSI was higher in CH than in TH (CA: 3.9 episodes per 1000 admissions vs. 2.2, p <0.01; HCA: 5.0 vs. 2.9

Emergence of community-acquired meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain USA300 as a cause of necrotising community-onset pneumonia.

Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), usually known as a nosocomial pathogen, has emerged as the predominant cause of skin and soft-tissue infections in many communities. Concurrent with the emergence of community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA), there have been increasing numbers of reports of community-acquired necrotising pneumonia in young patients and others without the classic health-care-associated risk factors. Community-onset necrotising pneumonia due to CA-MRSA is now recognised as an emerging clinical entity with distinctive clinical features and substantial morbidity and morta

The Sickle Cell Sabbath: a community program increases first-time blood donors in the African American faith community.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion therapy is an established treatment for primary and secondary prevention of strokes in children with sickle cell disease (SCD), a disease that predominantly affects African Americans. African American blood donors are more likely to have compatible minor red blood cell antigens for children with SCD who routinely receive transfusions. This study tested the hypothesis that when informed at church about the importance of blood donation, African Americans will have a higher than expected rate of first-time blood donation compared to the general population. Effects of community-based, videotape, and flash card instruction of community-referenced sight words on students with mental retardation.

Community-referenced sight words and phrases were taught to adolescents with mild and moderate mental retardation using three instructional methods in two locations. Words were presented on flash cards in a school setting, on videotape recordings in a school setting, and on naturally occurring signs in the community. During each session, participants were taught one third of the words in each of these conditions and were then tested at the community sites. A constant prompt delay procedure was used to promote stimulus control to the experimenter's cue initially and then to transfer control to

A University and Community Partnership to Address Diaper Insecurity Among Infants in Suburban Communities Through Home Visiting Services.

CONTEXT: Despite overall affluence in a suburban county, diaper insecurity affects many families in low-income communities where poverty rates are 3 times the county average. Existing federal assistance programs do not cover diapers, and transportation barriers in this car-dependent suburb limit access to traditional diaper bank models. OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate a university-community-federally qualified health center (FQHC) partnership model for addressing diaper insecurity among Medicaid-eligible families with infants and toddlers through community health worker (CHW) home visitin

The Influence of Crisis and Risk Communication Best Practices on COVID-19 Communication: A Content Analysis of Lessons Learned and Recommendations.

Despite the availability of crisis and risk communication best practices, scholars have analyzed and described the global COVID-19 pandemic communication failures that led to mass confusion about disease dynamics and appropriate protective behaviors. In this study, we sought to understand the alignment of crisis and risk communication best practices with national and international organizational lessons learned from COVID-19 pandemic responses. Our study design was a summative content analysis of a purposeful sample of COVID-19 lessons learned and recommendations reports published by US or int

Community-Based Approaches to Oral Frailty for Healthy Longevity in Japan: Bridging Screening, Community Action, and Integrated Care.

In super-aged societies such as Japan, achieving "healthy longevity with well-being" requires not only medical and long-term care services but also a seamless continuum that integrates health promotion, frailty prevention, and community-based support, along with age-friendly physical and social environments that support functional ability, social participation, and independent living. Within this framework, oral frailty (OF)-defined as the accumulation of slight declines in oral function, including tooth loss, chewing and swallowing difficulties, oral dryness, and low articulatory oral motor s

Guiding approaches to studying Alzheimer's disease: a scoping review of community engagement, health communication, and implementation science research.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are a leading cause of death, affecting up to 57 million globally. Up to 45% of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed by addressing non-medical drivers of health (NMDoH). Community engagement, health communication, and implementation science are core areas of public health and important to consider when researching ADRD. However, these fields are often siloed, limiting the efficacy of ADRD prevention and intervention. This scoping review maps how researchers have incorporated models and theoretical frameworks fr

Social Isolation and Suicidal Ideation Among Older Adults in Korea: The Role of Community Welfare Spending and Community Trust.

This study examined the extent to which community-level welfare spending and community trust moderated the association between social isolation and suicidal ideation among older adults in South Korea. Using data from the 2017 Korean Community Health Survey (N = 64,853, aged ≥65), we analyzed three social isolation indicators (living alone, lack of contact, and limited social participation) with multilevel logistic regression with cross-level interactions. All three types of isolation were associated with increased suicidal ideation, with lack of participation showing the strongest effect. Whil

Pilot study of the DeStress for Health Program: a community-engaged stress reduction and cancer prevention intervention for rural communities.

BACKGROUND: Stress related to personal, social, and environmental factors has been linked to engaging in unhealthy behaviors. These behaviors may increase cancer risk. Most current prevention programs do not address stress related to social factors and related stresses that are driving unhealthy behaviors. The purpose of this study was to pilot the DeStress for Heath Program. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial. Community members from two rural counties were randomized to the DeStress for Health Program group or a waitlist control group. The DeStress for Health Program,

Listening to many voices: qualitative perspectives of Black and Latino community health center patients on serious illness communication.

OBJECTIVES: To elucidate perspectives of Black and Hispanic/Latino patients to improve serious illness communication (SIC) delivery at a community health center. BACKGROUND: The benefits of serious illness communication (SIC) are well described, though access to effective and culturally appropriate SIC remains inequitable. Individuals from historically marginalized communities participate less in advance care planning, experience lower-quality communication, and feel less understood by clinicians. Making SIC more accessible for all patients is an important goal. METHODS: Focus groups were co
