"Sometimes I just wanna be outside": A qualitative analysis of experiences with accessing community greenspace among people living with chronic mobility disability.

Exposure to nature is associated with better mental health in the general population, but prior evidence suggests that people living with severe, chronic mobility impairment from paralysis due to spinal cord injury (SCI) may not experience similar benefits. Since many people living with SCI use wheelchairs and other medical devices for mobility, further exploration of how people living with mobility disability experience greenspace is needed to achieve equity in access to all public places. We assessed experiences with accessing greenspace reported in a sample of people living with chronic SCI

Community perspectives on how decentralising an emergency shelter influences transportation needs and use for persons experiencing homelessness.

Despite steady increases in homelessness in the U.S., only recently has research on transportation needs and use for persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) been the focus of research endeavours. Moreover, limited research has identified how the geographic relocation of homeless community services and resources impacts the transportation needs of PEH and how this process affects access to health and social services. To fill this gap in the literature, using a community-engaged research approach, we conducted a qualitative research study in which 24 professionals working in planning, transporta

Detection of varying influenza circulation within England in 2012/13: informing antiviral prescription and public health response.

BACKGROUND: Subnational variation of 2009 pandemic influenza activity in England has been reported; however, little work has been published on this topic for seasonal influenza. If variation is present, this knowledge may assist with both identifying the onset of influenza epidemics, informing community antiviral prescription and local health planning. METHODS: An end-of-season analysis of influenza surveillance systems (acute respiratory outbreaks, primary care consultations, virological testing, influenza-confirmed secondary care admissions and excess all-cause mortality) was undertaken at

Progress, challenges and the need to set concrete goals in the global tobacco endgame.

The tobacco endgame is rapidly moving from aspirational and theoretical toward a concrete and achievable goal and, in some cases, enacted policy. Endgame policies differ from traditional tobacco control measures by explicitly aiming to permanently end, rather than simply minimize, tobacco use. The purpose of this paper is to outline recent progress made in the tobacco endgame, its relationship to existing tobacco control policies, the challenges and how endgame planning can be adapted to different tobacco control contexts. Examples of implemented policies in three cities in the United States a

Psychiatric morbidity of a long stay hospital population with chronic schizophrenia and implications for future community care.

In the United Kingdom there are plans to close most mental hospitals over the next 10 years. There is continuing uncertainty about the effectiveness of community psychiatric services that will be expected to cope with mental hospital inpatients after discharge, most of whom have schizophrenia. A survey was conducted to assess the severity of illness among such patients and implications for their future care. All 222 patients in non-psychogeriatric long stay wards of a mental hospital who met research diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia were interviewed by two psychiatrists with the comprehen

Extreme weather events and HIV: development of a conceptual framework through qualitative interviews with people with HIV impacted by the California wildfires and their clinicians.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) are disproportionately vulnerable to the impacts of wildfires, given the need for frequent access to healthcare systems, higher burden of comorbidities, higher food insecurity, mental and behavioral health challenges, and challenges of living with HIV in a rural area. In this study, we aim to better understand the pathways through which wildfires impact health outcomes among PWH. METHODS: From October 2021 through February 2022, we conducted individual semi-structured qualitative interviews with PWH impacted by the Northern California wildfires and clinicians

Factors associated with sexual and reproductive health stigma among adolescent girls in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: Using our previously developed and tested Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Stigma Scale, we investigated factors associated with perceived SRH stigma among adolescent girls in Ghana. METHODS: We drew upon data from our survey study of 1,063 females 15-24yrs recruited from community- and clinic-based sites in two Ghanaian cities. Our Adolescent SRH Stigma Scale comprised 20 items and 3 sub-scales (Internalized, Enacted, Lay Attitudes) to measure stigma occurring with sexual activity, contraceptive use, pregnancy, abortion and family planning service use. We assessed r

Neurosurgery and the World Health Organization Intersectoral Global Action Plan for Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders 2022-2031.

The World Health Organization's Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP) on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Diseases 2022-2031 is a holistic, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral plan with a strong focus on equity and human rights. The IGAP was unanimously approved by all World Health Organization Member States at the 75th World Health Assembly in May 2022 and provides a framework for researchers and clinicians to study and address national and global inadequacies in the evaluation and management of people suffering from neurological disorders and their prevention. While IGAP has applied epilep

Improving the inclusion of transgender and nonbinary individuals in the planning, completion, and mobilization of cardiovascular research.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) individuals face unclear but potentially significant cardiovascular health inequities, yet no TNB-specific evidence-based interventions for cardiovascular risk reduction currently exist. To address this gap, we propose a road map to improve the inclusion of TNB individuals in the planning, completion, and mobilization of cardiovascular research. In doing so, the adoption of inclusive practices would optimize cardiovascular health surveillance and care for TNB communities.

Heat Risk Perceptions and Coping Strategies of the Unhoused.

The escalating awareness of heat-related risks and the associated imperative to enhance preparedness strategies at various levels has spurred a growing emphasis on disseminating knowledge about heat vulnerability. These efforts aim to equip diverse stakeholders with practical heat planning and forecasting tools. The success of these communication initiatives hinges on understanding the nuanced perceptions of risk and the priority assigned to addressing heat as a health risk. This paper delves explicitly into the unhoused population's risk perceptions and coping strategies. Acknowledged as one

Guidance for the Treatment and Management of COVID-19 Among People with Intellectual Disabilities.

The current COVID-19 pandemic is a pressing world crisis and people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) are vulnerable due to disparity in healthcare provision and physical and mental health multimorbidity. While most people will develop mild symptoms upon contracting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), some will develop serious complications. The aim of this study is to present guidelines for the care and treatment of people with IDs during the COVID-19 pandemic for both community teams providing care to people with IDs and inpatient psychiatric settings. The guidel

Pandemic planning for primary care in Southwestern Ontario: protocol for a sequential multiple-methods design.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, primary care providers rapidly adapted their practice in response to emerging knowledge of infection risk, resource availability and evolving patient and system needs. Given the previous lack of guidance specific to primary care settings, there is a need to formalise and integrate lessons learnt from these successful adaptations into future pandemic plans. Our project will develop a model for pandemic planning in primary care designed for replication in other Canadian regions and internationally to facilitate the scale and spread of effective primary
