Who Am I? A Life Story Intervention for Persons With Intellectual Disability and Psychiatric Problems.

This article describes an innovative intervention based on narrative and life review therapy that is tailored to people with intellectual disability (ID) and psychiatric problems. The current study provides a first evaluation of the intervention. A symptom checklist (SCL-90) was used in a pre- and post-follow-up design, and a qualitative evaluation of the intervention was carried out with 25 participants. Results showed large changes in psychiatric symptoms, in particular on depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and interpersonal sensitivity. Participants were mainly positive in

Composition of yoga-philosophy based mental traits (Gunas) in major psychiatric disorders: A trans-diagnostic approach.

Yoga philosophy includes the theory of Tri-guna (three mental traits): sattva (signifies a tendency to 'goodness'), rajas (tendency towards 'activity'), and tamas (tendency towards "inertia"). This cross-sectional study aimed to understand the differences in the expression of gunas in patients suffering from major psychiatric disorders (n = 113, 40 females) and age-gender-education-matched healthy controls (HCs; n = 113, 40 females). Patients were diagnosed by a psychiatrist using DSM 5 criteria and suffered from the following disorders: depression (n = 30), schizophrenia (SCZ; n = 28), obsess

DNA variation and psychopharmacology of the human serotonin receptor 1B (HTR1B) gene.

One of the neurotransmitter serotonin's receptors, HTR1B, is of interest for many neuropsychiatric traits, illnesses and treatments for multiple reasons, especially its tissue distribution, pharmacological profile and findings from mice lacking the receptor, along with reasons generally implicating serotonin. Eight mutation scans have uncovered sixteen polymorphisms in the coding sequence and surrounding 5'- and 3'-untranslated regions and much is now known of the distribution of these polymorphisms in various ethnic groups and their linkage disequilibrium relationships. Thus far, evidence exi

[Validation of a scale for responsibility (Salkovskis Responsibility Scale)].

Appraisal of inflated responsibility for harm is the cornerstone of Salkovskis's cognitive theory for obsessive compulsive disorder. The aim of our study is to present the validation study of the French translation of the R scale. The present study compared 50 subjects with obsessive compulsive disorder, 37 patients suffering from social phobia and 183 control subjects on a responsibility questionnaire (R scale). The cognitive hypothesis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) specifies two levels of responsibility-related cognitions: responsibility assumptions (attitudes) and responsibility ap

Explosive outbursts in children with Tourette's disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Sudden, explosive outbursts of behavior occur in some children with Tourette's disorder (TD). The etiology of these symptoms is unknown. This study investigated the relationship between explosive outbursts, TD, and its comorbid disorders. METHOD: Tic type and severity and the presence of specific comorbid disorders were compared in 37 children with TD and explosive outbursts and 31 children with TD who did not have such symptoms. RESULTS: Children with TD and explosive outbursts were more likely to demonstrate significant comorbid conditions, particularly attention-deficit/hyperac

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms as a correlate of severity in the clinical presentation of eating disorders: measuring the effects of depression.

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms have been related to severity in the clinical presentation of eating disorders, whereas the impact of depression on the correlations between their severity and the severity of eating disorders has not been investigated. This paper assesses the effects of depression in 42 adolescent patients who met DSM-IV criteria for anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa by using the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The results indicate that patients who show elevated obsessionality and comp

French validation of the POCS scale: A tool for screening intrusive thoughts, obsessions, and compulsions during pregnancy and postpartum.

OBJECTIVES: This study addressed the growing recognition of mental health disorders during the perinatal period, in particular obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD symptoms can affect between 3% and 10% of women during the perinatal period, a higher prevalence than in the general population. The Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (POCS), developed in Canada, is to our knowledge the only validated tool for screening OCD in the perinatal context. This study aimed to validate the French version of the POCS in order to improve early detection of OCD symptoms among French-speaking mothers and

A pilot follow-up study of childhood soft signs and the development of adult psychopathology.

A subgroup of subjects (4 of 12) with childhood soft signs and adolescent anxiety-withdrawal disorders were followed up into adulthood and assessed for soft signs and psychiatric diagnoses. These subjects continued to have soft-sign abnormalities and most had adult anxiety or affective disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In contrast, control subjects with childhood soft signs but no adolescent anxiety disorders had fewer soft signs at follow-up and no discrete adult anxiety or affective disorders, but they did have obsessive-compulsive symptoms that did not meet criteria

Agoraphobia, compulsive behaviours and behaviour completion mechanisms.

Anxiety is identified with a state of high arousal. Agoraphobia is differentiated from specific phobias which are inherent responses to situations which threatened primitive man. In agoraphobia, attacks of high arousal are produced by situations which delay ongoing activity. It is hypothesised that such delays produce arousal by activating behaviour completion mechanisms. Evidence is reviewed which indicates desensitization has a lasting effect in agoraphobia but not in specific phobias. It is suggested that desensitization reduces the arousal produced by behaviour completion mechanisms. Avers

The Manitoba IBD cohort study: a population-based study of the prevalence of lifetime and 12-month anxiety and mood disorders.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Given the impact of anxiety and mood disorders on health, it is important to consider these disorders in persons with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We assessed the prevalence of anxiety and mood disorders in a population-based IBD cohort. METHODS: A structured diagnostic interview was administered to participants in the cohort (N = 351), and rates were compared to age-, gender-, and region-matched controls drawn from a national survey (N = 779). RESULTS: A comparison of lifetime prevalence suggests higher rates of panic, generalized anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive

Fear Over Facts: When Fellow Clinicians Become a Barrier to Dissemination of Exposure and Response Prevention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder-A Clinical Response to Licensing Board Investigation of Exposure and Response Prevention.

In 2018, a graduate level student filed a complaint regarding the use of exposure-based therapy for persons with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experiencing violent obsessions. In the investigation, the licensing board expressed concern about safety of us of exposure and response prevention (ERP) with children and in public venues. The licensing board also struggled with accurate assessment of a clinician's efficacy in following the gold-standard treatment for OCD. Despite extensive research demonstrating ERP is a safe, effective treatment for OCD, stigma against exposure based treatments

Basic science and neurobiological research: potential relevance to sexual compulsivity.

A unique challenge posed by advancing scientific knowledge about the biology of human behavior is how to integrate that understanding with the desire to hold ourselves--and one another--morally accountable. As human beings, we are something more than just passive agents whose behavior is the sum product of biologic determinism. Because of the existence of the mind, we are also active agents with the capacity to influence, at least to some extent, our own destinies. Behavior may be determined, but it is not predetermined. We are one of its determinants. Misconduct by a person of sound mind shou

Targeted Connectomic Neuromodulation of the Orbitofrontal Cortex To Treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Pathological activity within frontal cortical circuits is common in many neuropsychiatric disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We developed an invasive brain mapping protocol in which temporary electrodes are implanted in candidate sites to identify personalized stimulation targets that can acutely relieve OCD symptoms. We found that stimulation within segments of the anterior limb of the internal capsule (ALIC) focally suppressed the structurally and functionally connected region of prefrontal and cingulate cortex. By leveraging the topographic organization of the ALIC, we

Prescription Opioid Medication Survey: A Tool to Collect Deep Phenotypic Data on the Multifactorial Pathways to Opioid Use Disorder in Clinical and Population-Based Cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: We are in the midst of an opioid epidemic. In the USA, more than a third of the country knows someone who has died from an opioid overdose. Prescription opioids (e.g., oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl) are commonly used and misused, and it has been estimated that approximately 8-12% of individuals who misuse opioids will subsequently develop an opioid use disorder (OUD). While emphasis has been placed on understanding OUD and the associated adverse effects, there remains a critical gap in systematically characterizing the multifactorial pathways (e.g., behavioral, clinical, g

Real-Life Clinical Experience With Cariprazine: A Systematic Review of Case Studies.

BACKGROUND: The hierarchy of evidence coming from evidence-based medicine favors meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials over observational studies and clinical cases. Nonetheless, in the field of psychiatry, where conditions are much more complex, additional evidence coming from real-world clinical practice is necessary to complement data from these gold standards. Thus, in this systematic review, the aim is to summarize the evidence coming from clinical case reports regarding cariprazine, a third-generation antipsychotic drug that has been approved for the treatment of schizophrenia a
