Vernal keratocongiuntivitis (VKC) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the ocular conjunctiva and cornea. It is a rare and underestimated pathology, whose missed or delayed diagnosis can lead to the development of serious ocular complications. BACKGROUND: Total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) is increased in many situations such as allergic diseases, primary immunodeficiencies (PID), parasitosis, infections and malignancies. PURPOSE: This article addresses the etiology of red eyes and a novel case of food-induced red eye.
CASE REPORT: An 82-year-old white male patient reported 50 years of episodes of severe unilateral bulbar injection in either eye following ingestion of certain foods. Thinned scleras in this particular patient made the injection in his eyes more observable. Photodocumentation of this reaction after he ingested these foods is shown.
CONCLUSIONS: It is hypothesized that this is a new explanation for an intermittent, unilateral, self-limited red eye-a food-induced red eye.

This review of the major milestones in the history of ocular allergy and immunology shows how significantly this subdiscipline has contributed to the tremendous progress in the understanding of mechanisms of allergic and immunologic diseases, as well as in their better management. It also indicates unmet needs and priority areas for future research.

PURPOSE: To investigate the subtypes, extent of activation, and method of degranulation of mast cells (MCs) by observation of the ultramicrostructure of secretory granules from MCs in the giant papillae (GP) of patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC).

Keratoconus has been associated with various ocular and systemic disorders. It has been linked, in a few cases, with floppy eyelid syndrome (a disorder characterized by a soft rubbery upper tarsus, papillary conjunctivitis and obesity). A 40-year-old male presented with a complaint of gradually decreasing vision in the right eye. An intermittent right exotropia had become constant and he was unable to maintain fixation voluntarily. Corneal findings were consistent with keratoconus. Floppy eyelid syndrome was also diagnosed. An underlying connective tissue disorder may link these two disorders.

We treated 11 patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis for four to nine months with topical cyclosporine as a 2% dilution in castor oil. No significant side effects occurred, except for mild and transient burning upon administration. Within the first 15 days, both symptoms and signs of the condition improved significantly, and these results were maintained throughout the entire treatment. Twenty-one children (4 to 12 years old) with severe vernal keratoconjunctivitis refractive to treatment with corticosteroid eyedrops and/or 2% disodium cromoglycate (Optic-rom, Fisons) were treated with CsA 2% eyedrops in oil solution.
