Allelic association of the D2 dopamine receptor gene with cocaine dependence.

The objective of the present study was to examine allelic prevalence of the D2 dopamine receptor (DRD2) gene in male cocaine-dependent (CD) Caucasian (non-Hispanic) subjects and to determine the relationship of DRD2 alleles to family history and selected behavioral measures. The prevalence of the A1 allele in CD subjects (n = 53) was 50.9%. It was significantly higher than either the 16.0% prevalence (P < 10(-4)) in non-substance abusing controls (n = 100) or the 30.9% prevalence (P < 10(-2)) in population controls (n = 265) wherein substance abusers were not excluded. Similarly, a significant

Models predicting the role of emotion reactivity in the link between reasons for not using and lifetime substance use.

Objective Substance use peaks in emerging adulthood, with evidence suggesting that college-attending emerging adults have a higher rate of substance use than their non-college attending peers. More insight into the factors that might contribute to substance use among college-attending emerging adults is needed. The current study examined the moderating role of emotion reactivity in the link between perceived importance of reasons for not using substances and lifetime marijuana and alcohol use. Participants: 440 undergraduate students under the age of 21 (M = 18.67, 47.7% Male) from a large Mid

Critical Review: When the Party is Over: A Systematic Review of Behavioral Interventions for Substance-Using Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Because problematic patterns of alcohol and other substance use are prevalent drivers of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, comprehensive interventions are needed for substance-using men who have sex with men (SUMSM). We conducted a systematic review of 12 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of behavioral interventions for reducing condomless anal intercourse (CAI) in SUMSM. Three RCTs observed that cognitive behavioral or motivational interviewing interventions achieved a 24% to 40% decrease in CAI. Interventions also tended to demonstrate greater efficacy for reducing CAI and substance use among those w

Association between use of specific drugs and antiretroviral adherence: findings from MACH 14.

To determine the association between individual substances of abuse and antiretroviral adherence, analyses require a large sample assessed using electronic data monitoring (EDM). In this analysis, EDM data from 1,636 participants in 12 US adherence-focused studies were analyzed to determine the associations between recent use of various substances and adherence during the preceding 4 weeks. In bivariate analyses comparing adherence among patients who had used a specific substance to those who had not, adherence was significantly lower among those who had recently used cocaine, other stimulants

The association between disordered eating and substance use and abuse in women: a community-based investigation.

A behavioral analysis was conducted of various eating disorder behaviors and their relationship with the lifetime use of different substances in a community-based sample of young adult women, aged 18-25 years. Women with particular eating disorder behaviors were selected from the 517 women who completed the Women's Health Survey. Analyses compared the frequencies of lifetime use of a range of licit and illicit substances as well as the abuse of prescription medications between each of the eating disorder groups and the normal control group. Results showed that as eating disorder behaviors beca

Paralysis Activity of "Basic Substances" and Rose Extracts on Meloidogyne incognita Second-Stage Juveniles.

To date, searching for bionematicidals is essential. In the absence of nematicides, "Basic Substances" are gaining ground since they are cost-effective, do not mandate an expiration date and have no inherent capacity to cause endocrine-disrupting neurotoxic or immunotoxic effects. Most "Basic Substances" are authorized for the control of phytoparasitic fungi and insects, whereas nematicidals are yet to be available. In this study, we employed "Basic Substances" and in particular, beer, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium chloride, together with rose aromatotherapy by-products, on nematicidal bioass

Pregabalin Qualitative Detection in Turkish Forensic Cases Between 2017 to 2018.

Pregabalin (PGB) has been commonly subjected to diversion, from being a prescription drug to a recreational drug. In this study, pregabalin use (which is one of the substances subject to control in Turkey) and the concomitant use of other substances in cases admitted to the Izmir Forensic Medicine Institute was evaluated. Samples from 15,259 cases were screened, between June 2017 and December 2018, for the presence of PGB, and PGB positive cases were further analyzed. Of all cases screened, PGB was detected in 3.2% (n = 487). The mean age of PGB positive cases was 29.24 ± 10.34 years old (min:

[Endothelins. I. Physiology].

At the beginning of 1988 in Japan in a unique manner a new peptide substance derived form the endothelium was described, so far the most powerful vasoconstrictor substance-endothelin. This started an information boom which soon led to evidence of other substances of this group, naturally related substances; the detailed structure of all endothelins was established, gradually these substances were synthetized, very sensitive radioassays for their estimation were developed. Experimental and clinical work on endothelins and their effects penetrate at present all spheres of medicine and intensive

Sympathectomies lead to transient substance P-immunoreactive sensory fibre plasticity in the rat skin.

Research using animal models of neuropathic pain has revealed sympathetic sprouting onto dorsal root ganglion cells. More recently, sensory fibre sprouting onto dorsal root ganglion cells has also been observed. Previous work in our laboratory demonstrated persistent sympathetic fibre sprouting in the skin of the rat lower lip following sensory denervation of this region. Therefore, we applied immunocytochemistry to determine the effects of sympathectomies on the terminal fields of sensory fibres. The superior cervical ganglia were removed bilaterally and the effects on the innervation of the

Parental Knowledge is a Contextual Amplifier of Associations of Pubertal Maturation and Substance Use.

Earlier pubertal development and less parental knowledge have been linked to more substance use during adolescence. The present study examines interactions between pubertal timing and tempo and parental knowledge (children's disclosure, parental control, and parental solicitation) for adolescent substance initiation. Data are from a northeastern US-based cohort-sequential study examining 1023 youth (52 % female) semiannually for up to 6 assessments (ages 10.5-19 years). The findings supported the hypothesis that lower knowledge is a contextual amplifier of early timing-substance use associatio

A Post-Hurricane Katrina Examination of Substance Abuse Treatment Discharges With Co-Occurring Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: There is increasing literature supporting the adverse effects of disasters on substance use and psychiatric disorders. The co-occurrence of psychiatric disorders with substance use intensifies the challenge of treatment delivery. Thus the aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of substance use, treatment characteristics, and demographics of discharges from substance abuse treatment in New Orleans, post-Hurricane Katrina. Trends associated with discharges that have a co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorder (COD) were also assessed. The secondary aim of this stud

Polydrug use and its association with drug treatment outcomes among primary heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine users.

BACKGROUND: Polydrug use may challenge effective treatment for substance use disorders. We evaluate whether secondary substance use modifies the association between treatment and primary drug use among primary heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine (MA) users. METHODS: Data were obtained from prospective cohort studies on people who use illicit drugs (PWUD) in California, USA. Using repeated monthly data on self-reported secondary substance use (heroin, cocaine, MA, alcohol or marijuana; ≥1day in a month), primary drug use (≥1day in a month), and treatment participation, collected via timeline f

Childhood maltreatment and early-onset substance use: sex differences in the impact of various types of maltreatment and psychiatric comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment significantly increases the risk of early substance use and psychiatric disorders; however, the sex differences in this relationship and the varying effects of different types of maltreatment in youths remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to explore sex differences in the relationship between various maltreatment subtypes and the onset of early substance use. It also sought to examine how other indirect forms of mistreatment, such as household dysfunction, affect the age at which substance use begins. METHODS: This multicenter study involved

Prevention and drug treatment.

Evidence linking alcohol and other drug abuse with child maltreatment, particularly neglect, is strong. But does substance abuse cause maltreatment? According to Mark Testa and Brenda Smith, such co-occurring risk factors as parental depression, social isolation, homelessness, or domestic violence may be more directly responsible than substance abuse itself for maltreatment. Interventions to prevent substance abuse-related maltreatment, say the authors, must attend to the underlying direct causes of both. Research on whether prevention programs reduce drug abuse or help parents control substan

Mental Health and Substance Use in Rural and Northern British Columbia: A Systematic Review of Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Intervention Effectiveness.

The rural and northern communities of British Columbia (BC) have their own barriers to accessing mental health and substance use services that lead to greater susceptibility to psychological disorders and substance abuse. Although there is increasing awareness about these inequalities, the research on mental health and substance use outcomes in these groups is still piecemeal. The proposed systematic review provided a synthesis of the current literature on mental health and substance use outcomes in rural and northern BC, the population-specific risk and protective factors, and the effectivene
