[Register and cohort studies : Overview of the most important data sources at the German Rheumatism Research Center].

Over the past 28 years the German Rheumatism Research Center in Berlin has initiated various epidemiological studies in which data on patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases are collected nationwide and multicentric. The spectrum ranges from rheumatoid arthritis and spondylarthritis to connective tissue diseases and rheumatic diseases in childhood. Based on the respective scientific question, studies of different types were established. The German National Databases for adults and children annually collect cross-sectional data to map the care of patients. In two inception cohorts, adults

Born and bred to burn out: A life-course view and reflections on job burnout.

Burnout is a response to prolonged stressors at work, and is defined as a chronic syndrome including exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy. The 40 years of research on burnout have yielded thousands of studies on its measurement, antecedents, correlates, and consequences. However, most of these studies have used a cross-sectional design, and only very few have addressed burnout from a life-course perspective. In the first part of this article, we reflect on the ideas that inspired our multidisciplinary "A 35-Year Follow-Up Study on Burnout Among Finnish Employees," and the ch

Reduced sleep as an obesity risk factor.

Poor sleep has increasingly gained attention as a potential contributor to the recent obesity epidemic. The increased prevalence of obesity in Western nations over the past half-century has been paralleled by a severe reduction in sleep duration. Physiological studies suggest reduced sleep may impact hormonal regulation of appetite. Prospective studies suggest reduced habitual sleep duration as assessed by self-report is an independent risk factor for an increased rate of weight gain and incident obesity. Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated that the association between reduced sleep and

Stability of diagnosis: application to phenotype definition.

Using diagnostic stability data from independent diagnostic interviews conducted 6 years apart, we determine which diagnoses are predictive of diagnoses 6 years later. Logistic analysis using categorical predictors is used to establish ordinal relationships and to suggest diagnostic hierarchies. The multiple-threshold multifactorial model is used to estimate the within-person correlation over time. Rather than use a simple dichotomy of "affected" or "unaffected," we provide odds ratios for mania, hypomania, and major depressive disorder in terms of diagnostic hierarchies, allowing a ranking of

Re-evaluation of Pleistocene and Holocene long bone robusticity trends with regards to age-at-death estimates and size standardization procedures.

Long-term trends in robusticity of lower limb bones in the genus Homo through the Pleistocene until the present have been proposed, which have been interpreted as a consequence of decreasing levels of mobility and activity patterns, changes in lifestyle, and environmental factors. There has also long been evidence that skeletal strength increases over an individual's lifespan. This increase is caused by continuous bone remodeling that optimizes the structure of a bone to resist mechanical loadings and creates a balance between endosteal resorption and subperiosteal apposition. However, none of

Tinnitus Treatment with Oxytocin: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of an external stimulus. It is a frequent condition for which there is as yet no pharmacological treatment approved. Auditory and non-auditory pathways are involved in tinnitus' pathophysiology. Oxytocin is a neurohormone and eventual neurotransmitter that plays a complex role in social cognition and behavior. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential of oxytocin as a tinnitus treatment. STUDY DESIGN: Two studies were performed. Study 1 was a long-term open pilot study, while study 2 investigated short-term effects with a double-bli

The arrangement of the coronary artery trunks is subject to inheritance factors: A study in Syrian hamsters.

The concept that anatomical variations in the coronary artery tree might be influenced by genes is relatively old. However, empirical evidence on the effect of genotype on the coronary morphology is still scarce. In the Syrian hamster, there is a septal coronary artery which arises from the left or from the right coronary artery and supplies most of the interventricular septum. The aim was to decide whether the anatomical origin of the septal artery is subject to inheritance factors. Overall, 483 internal casts of the heart and coronary arteries were examined. All the hamsters included in this

School shootings and mental health outcomes: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Recent data indicate a rising frequency of school shootings over the past two decades. Although these events are relatively rare within the broader context of firearm violence, more than 357 000 students have been exposed to firearm violence in primary and secondary schools since 1999. However, the psychological impacts remain poorly understood. This scoping review synthesises existing evidence and highlights gaps for further research. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Criminal Justice Abstracts to identify empirical studies on s

The Association Between Essential Tremor and Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review of Clinical and Epidemiological Studies.

Background/Objectives: The objective is to systematically review evidence from clinical and epidemiological studies for or against an association between essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: A literature search in PubMed (February 2025) used several combinations of keywords. Thirty-three studies (1960-2023) were identified. Results: The best available data are derived from a population-based study in Spain, followed by a cohort study in the US. Each of these prospective studies provided evidence that ET is a risk factor for PD, with elevated risks of ~4-5. In cross-sect

Identification of 2,4-Disubstituted Imidazopyridines as Hemozoin Formation Inhibitors with Fast-Killing Kinetics and In Vivo Efficacy in the Plasmodium falciparum NSG Mouse Model.

A series of 2,4-disubstituted imidazopyridines, originating from a SoftFocus Kinase library, was identified from a high throughput phenotypic screen against the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Hit compounds showed moderate asexual blood stage activity. During lead optimization, several issues were flagged such as cross-resistance against the multidrug-resistant K1 strain, in vitro cytotoxicity, and cardiotoxicity and were addressed through structure-activity and structure-property relationship studies. Pharmacokinetic properties were assessed in mice for compounds showing desirab

Increasing Liver Fat Is Associated With Incident Cardiovascular Risk Factors.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with increased liver- and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related morbidity and mortality. In cross-sectional analyses, NAFLD clusters with several cardiometabolic traits including obesity,1,2 hypertension,3 diabetes,1 and dyslipidemia.3 However, liver fat is dynamic and changes over time. Aside from limited prior studies evaluating diet or exercise interventions, little is known about the association between changes in liver fat and the incidence of CVD risk factors. Additionally, previous studies often have limited follow-up; evaluate only

Noninvasive assessment of bone microarchitecture by MRI.

In determining fracture risk, it has become apparent that bone mineral density accounts for only a portion of bone strength, with the remainder being determined by the material and structural properties of the bone tissue. Over the past 15 years, high-resolution MRI has provided a window into the structural nature of bone disease. Cross-sectional studies imaging the trabecular bone in patients with conditions ranging from postmenopausal osteoporosis to organ transplantation to renal osteodystrophy have all demonstrated a correlation of microarchitecture with fracture burden and have done so at

Robot-assisted sutureless minimally invasive mitral valve repair.

Our institution has performed over 100 robot-assisted mitral valve repairs. The procedure has shown many advantages to conventional sternotomy-based repair. However, the robotic approach leads to longer cross-clamp and bypass times than conventional sternotomy. As a result of the increased risk of myocardial damage and arrhythmias from lengthy arrest times, nitinol U-clips have been used in the laboratory and currently in patients for the tissue-annuloplasty ring approximation. The technology replaces the time-consuming task of knot tying, as well as provides better visualization during placem

The Developmental Trajectory of Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairment in Breast Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Neuroimaging Studies.

This systematic review explored the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the clinical time course of cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) in breast cancer patients through the review of longitudinal neuroimaging studies. Before chemotherapy, results reported no evidence for neuropsychological, structural (gray matter) and brain perfusion changes. However, functional brain alterations were evident and revealed a frontoparietal hyperactivation during working memory tasks. Fatigue and number of days since surgery were the two suggested confounding factors. Acutely after chemotherapy, this
