Branchial remnant cysts of mature and juvenile horses.

This clinical report describes 8 cases of branchial remnant cysts (BRC) in the horse. The horses presented with bimodal age distribution, with 5 cases in mature horses (age 8-21 years) and 3 in foals (age 1, 6 and 10 months). Mature cases presented for dysphagia or intermittent oesophageal obstruction (2/5), and retropharyngeal swelling (3/5), whereas respiratory stridor and visible mass were presenting complaints in the foals. Presence of a right-sided (5/8) or dorsally located (2/8) palpable retropharyngeal mass of 3-35 cm diameter was noted clinically; one left-sided mass was identified as

Comparison of endovaginal ultrasound and cytological evaluation of cystic ovarian tumors.

Endovaginal ultrasound is a good diagnostic tool for distinguishing between cystic and solid tumors. Unilocular cysts in the lower pelvis se … ion was performed with Ringer acetate. Cytological evaluation was performed on both portions of the cyst fluid. The negative predictive value with respect to malignancy was 77% for cytology of the first portion of the aspirate, 81% for irrigation, and 100% for ultrasound. The corresponding figures for positive predictive value were 100%, 100%, and 73%. We co …

Association of cyst type with risk factors for breast cancer and relapse rate in women with gross cystic disease of the breast.

The concentration of potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+) was measured in breast cyst fluid (BCF) from 611 cysts greater than 3 ml aspirated in 520 women with gross cystic disease of the breast. These women were enrolled, from 1983 on, in a cohort study aimed at assessing the relationship between cyst type, as defined by the K+/Na+ ratio in BCF, and the risk of breast cancer. The inverse relationship between K+ and Na+ and the bimodal distribution of the K+/Na+ ratio in BCF were confirmed. Type I cysts were defined as cysts with a K+/Na+ greater than 1.5 in BCF. Among women with type I cysts, a hig…

Minocycline infusion sclerotherapy for infected hepatic cysts in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: a case report and literature review.

We report the case of a Japanese man in his 60 s undergoing hemodialysis for end-stage renal disease due to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, who had experienced repeated hepatic cyst infections. Despite treatment with oral antibiotics, including minocycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, he presented with fever and was admitted to our hospital. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a high signal intensity in a large hepatic cyst, and percutaneous transhepatic drainage was performed. Enterococcus faecium was isolated from the cyst fluid. Three intracystic m…

Fourth ventricle neurocysticercosis presenting with Bruns' syndrome: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common helminthic infection of the central nervous system. We present a case of the fourth ventricle NCC that presented with Bruns' syndrome (with headaches worsened by head movements, gait ataxia, and vomiting) and the operative technique used for cyst removal. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 39-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department with moderate-to-severe headaches that got worse in the afternoon and were triggered by head movements, relieved on prone position, and were associated with gait ataxia and vomiting. A brain magnetic resonanc

Apparent Clitoromegaly in Healthy Female Newborn.

Cysts of the external female genitalia are uncommon findings and can be either congenital or acquired. Congenital cysts of the external female genitalia may be discovered from the initial newborn examination and cause concern for clitoromegaly or ambiguous genitalia. We describe a clitoral cyst presenting as apparent clitoromegaly in a newborn; this is the third reported case in the literature. We also review the differential and evaluation for clitoromegaly in a newborn. We present a case of a 1-day-old newborn, with concern for clitoromegaly on initial newborn examination. Popliteal cyst before William Baker: first report in the Galenic Corpus.

INTRODUCTION: A popliteal cyst, also known as Baker cyst, is a benign fluctuant swelling of the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa in the popliteal fossa at the back of the knee. The cyst is named after William Morrant Baker, who is considered to have first described this fluid collection with new sac formation outside of the knee-joint in 1877. We herein present a short description contained in the Galenic Corpus that appears to match to what we now call the Baker cyst. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Α thorough survey of Kühn's Galenic Corpus was performed. RESULTS: The 14th book of Kühn's edition

Rathke's cleft cyst.

Rathke's cleft cysts are benign sellar and suprasellar lesions arising from epithelial remnants of Rathke's pouch with a peak incidence at 30-50 years of age. The majority are between 10 and 20mm in diameter and contain mucoid or gelatinous material encapsulated in a thin cyst wall of simple or pseudostratified cuboidal or columnar epithelium. Symptomatic cases are rare, but incidental lesions are found in 11% of unselected postmortem cases. The pathogenesis of these lesions is uncertain, but they may occasionally share histopathologic features with (papillary) craniopharyngiomas. The most com

Pre-tibial synovial cyst after reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament: case report.

Arthroscopic reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament has been modernized through new surgical techniques and new materials. When tibial fixation is performed using an absorbable screw, complications may occur, such as formation of a pre-tibial cyst. The case described here is about a patient who presented an anteromedial synovial cyst in his right knee, three years after having undergone ACL reconstruction. The patient did not present any pain nor any complaints other than a mass that progressively increased in size, worsened after physical activities. Imaging examinations were reques

Computed tomography findings in cerebral hydatid disease.

AIM: To describe imaging findings of cerebral hydatid cysts on computed tomography of brain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed CT scans of brain in 5 patients with pathologically confirmed hydatid cysts in cerebral hemispheres. The patients were scanned either on a spiral (single slice) CT or on multidetector-row CT before and after intravenous injection of iodinated contrast material. RESULTS: All the patients were children aged 8 to 13 years with 3 boys and 2 girls. Features of raised intracranial tension were present in all the cases at presentation. CT findings of a large

Intracystic hemorrhage of a large simple hepatic cyst.

Spontaneous intracystic hemorrhage rarely occurs in nonparasitic hepatic cysts. We describe a patient with spontaneous intracystic hemorrhage of a large simple hepatic cyst that mimicked a malignancy. A 59-year-old man presented with right abdominal discomfort. The patient's medical history included a simple hepatic cyst that had been detected 7 years earlier but was left untreated. Three weeks before presentation, right upper abdominal pain occurred but resolved spontaneously. The serum CA19-9 concentration was 48.3 U/mL (normal<37 U/mL). Ultrasonography revealed a large cystic mass, containi

Ventral extradural spinal meningeal cyst causing cord compression: neurosurgical treatment.

Spinal extradural meningeal cysts are typically formed by a thin fibrotic membranous capsule, macroscopically similar that of an arachnoid membrane, filled by cerebro spinal fluid and related to a nerve root or to the posterior midline. Ventral location is extremely rare and when it occurs they usually cause spinal cord herniation through the ventral dural gap. A 61 year-old man who began with a two years long history of insidious tetraparesis, spasticity and hyperreflexia in lower extremities, and flaccid atrophy of upper limbs, without sensory manifestations, is presented. Intrasplenic pancreatic pseudocyst: a case report.

An intrasplenic pseudocyst associated with the acute relapsing phase of chronic pancreatitis in a 51-year-old woman is reported, with a review of the Japanese literature. The patient was admitted with a complaint of left lateral and back pain. Abdominal US and CT revealed communicating cysts at the pancreatic tail and the subcapsule of the spleen. A repeat US and CT 1 month after admission demonstrated enlargement of the cyst at the pancreatic tail. ERCP revealed a dilated main pancreatic duct without any definite evidence of stenosis, and direct communication with the cyst at the pancreatic t

Imaging in neurenteric cysts of the posterior cranial fossa.

Neurenteric cysts are cystic masses lined by a columnar epithelium of endodermal origin. They are rare in the central nervous system. We report two neurenteric cysts in the posterior cranial fossa and describe their neuroradiological features. The lesions were of low density on CT and more accurately delineated on MRI. They gave the same signal as cerebrospinal fluid on all sequences. There was no contrast enhancement.

Ultrasonic features of Gartner's duct cyst.

Gartner's duct cysts will usually be incidental findings during pelvic sonography. Of developmental origin, they may present anywhere along the lateral aspect of the female genital tract. When the cysts are of parovarian origin, they will mimic other fluid-filled adnexal masses, and no specific diagnosis can be made. When alongside the vagina or cervix, however, their ultrasonographic appearance is probably characteristic.

Cerebral cysticercosis manifesting as hydrocephalus--case report.

A 70-year-old female presented with gait disturbance and dementia. Cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed mild aseptic meningitis. Magnetic resonance images showed multiple cystic lesions and mural nodules in some of the cysts in the cerebral parenchyma. Metrizamide computed tomography clearly demonstrated multiple intracisternal cysts. Some cysts were surgically excised and a ventriculoperitoneal shunt was implaced. Postoperatively, her gait disturbance and dementia disappeared. Histological examination revealed cysticercosis with viable larva. Ten months after the initial surgery, she pres

"Congealed waterlilly" sign: a new sonographic sign of liver hydatid cyst.

The ultrasonographic (US) appearance of hydatid liver disease is well established, but solid cysts have long defied US characterization. We present 23 solid cysts and describe a new feature called the "Congealed waterlilly" sign. As the physical characteristics of the hydatid fluid change from watery to a viscid gel, it becomes echogenic. The intact folds of the germinal layer trapped within the viscid matrix give rise to the appearance of curvilinear structures which no longer move with changing patient posture. Similar findings have been observed in eight medically treated patients. We obser

Intra- and extra-uterine diagnosis and treatment of peripartum imperforate hymen: a case report.

The article reports a case of fetal imperforate hymen diagnosed by prenatal MRI and confirmed by postnatal surgery. The pregnant woman underwent routine 37-week ultrasound examination, which revealed an enlarged fetal bladder and an abdominal cystic mass. Subsequent 37-week + 6 prenatal MRI showed fetal uterine and vaginal fluid accumulation, suggesting congenital vaginal atresia. At 39 weeks + 5, under ultrasound guidance, amniotic, fetal abdominal, and vaginal cyst fluid were aspirated through a maternal abdominal puncture, avoiding the bowel. The cysts were significantly reduced in size, an…

Choledochocele imaged with magnetic resonance cholangiography.

Choledochal cysts are rare developmental malformations of the biliary tree. Percutaneous and endoscopic ultrasound, as well as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, are recommended diagnostic tools. Magnetic resonance cholangiography may also contribute to the workup and treatment plan of patients with choledochal cysts. We report a 25-yr-old white woman with episodic nausea and moderate epigastric discomfort. Magnetic resonance cholangiography showed a rather spherical, cyst-like, fluid-filled structure in continuity with the prepapillary segment of the common bile duct, thus making

Midline developmental abnormalities of the posterior fossa: correlation of classification with outcome.

Fifty children with developmental retrocerebellar cysts of the posterior fossa, treated over an 11-year period, were assessed. The cysts were classified according to a morphological classification based on axial computerized tomography scans in order to assess the usefulness of this classification with regard to treatment and outcome. There were 35 patients with the Dandy-Walker complex and 15 patients with posterior fossa cysts. All surgically treated patients had cerebrospinal fluid shunting as the only form of treatment. Cystoperitoneal shunts were the treatment of choice. Although the morp
