Sjögren's syndrome (SjS) is a systemic autoimmune disease in which an immunological attack primarily against the salivary and lacrimal glands results in loss of acinar cell tissue and function leading to stomatitis sicca and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Acute dacryoadenitis with abscess formation has been rarely described. We describe four cases that resolved with incision and drainage. PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and immunopathologic features of 2 patients with bilateral dacryoadenitis associated with regional enteritis.
DESIGN: Retrospective, clinicopathologic study.
METHODS: Clinical records, photographs, and imaging studies were reviewed and microscopic sections of lacrimal gland biopsy samples were critically re-evaluated. The male Wistar Bonn/Kobori (WBN/Kob) rat is known to be a unique animal model for chronic pancreatitis with widely distributed fibrosis and degeneration of parenchyma because of the infiltration of lymphocytes. In this report, we show that female (but not male) rats develop dacryoadenitis at 3 months of age, and that both male and female WBN/Kob rats develop sialoadenitis, thyroiditis, sclerotic cholangitis and tubulointerstitial nephritis over 18 months of age. The infiltration of CD8+ cells and the deposits of tissue-specific IgG2b were observed in the injured pancreas and lachrymal glands.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a newly recognized systemic chronic fibroinflammatory disease. However, the pathogenesis of IgG4-RD remains unknown. BACKGROUND: Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) is characterized by an exfoliative rash resembling widespread burns. It is often considered on the same spectrum of disease as Stevens Johnson Syndrome but is distinguished by epidermal detachment of >30% of total body surface area (TBSA). The authors report a case of orbital cellulitis with abscess formation that developed after surgical management of canaliculitis. The patient developed pain, erythema, proptosis, and limited eye movements 3 days after canalicular debridement. She required urgent drainage of an orbital abscess and was treated with intravenous antibiotics for 2 weeks. Complications from surgical management of canaliculitis are unusual. Clinicians should be aware of the rare but serious risk of spread of the infection to the orbit.

The results of a two year survey of eye problems among the patients at the Palo Seco Hospital in the Canal Zone are presented. Only two patients, one classified as having lepromatous leprosy and the other as having the tuberculoid form of the disease, failed to exhibit ocular complications. The high prevalence of leprotic ocular disease (96%) is most probably due to the advanced age of the patients, the lengthy duration of their illness, and the high percentage of patients afflicted by the lepromatous form of the disease.
