Behçet's disease: possible role of secretory component deficiency, synovial inclusions, and fibrinolytic abnormality in the various manifestations of the disease.

Detailed study of four patients with BD, four controls with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, and 12 healthy controls has demonstrated markedly decreased levels of salivary SC in both its free and bound forms, and normal total protein concentration in BD salivas. In two BD patients, SC deficiency was also found in jejunal fluids. Depressed in vitro response of blood T cells to mitogens was also noted in BD. Levels of IgA in serum were normal, as well as total numbers of T cells and IgA-carrying B cells in blood. A fluid phase abnormality of the fibrinolytic system as tested by the clot lysis assa

Diagnosis and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal bleeding: iron deficiency anemia working group consensus report.

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are important signs of gastrointestinal (GI) hemorrhage. Therefore, the evaluation of the GI tract should be a part of the diagnostic protocol in patients with IDA. GI hemorrhage is not a disease but a symptom, which might have different underlying causes. ID and IDA have significant negative impacts on the life quality and work ability, and they may lead to frequent hospitalization, delay of discharge, and increased healthcare costs. Therefore, an optimal management of the disease causing GI hemorrhage should include iron replacement thera

Flavin adenine dinucleotide synthase deficiency due to FLAD1 mutation presenting as multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenation deficiency-like disease: A case report.

Multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD), also known as glutaric acidemia type II, is classically caused by a congenital defect in electron transfer flavoprotein (ETF) or ETF dehydrogenase (ETFDH). Flavin adenine dinucleotide synthase (FADS) deficiency caused by mutations in FLAD1 was recently reported as a novel riboflavin metabolism disorder resembling MADD. Here, we describe a Japanese boy with FADS deficiency due to a novel mutation (p.R249*) in FLAD1. In the asymptomatic male infant born at full term, newborn screening showed positive results with elevated C5 and C14:1 acylcarnit

Effects of copper deficiency and copper deficiency coupled with high dietary iron or molybdenum on phagocytic cell function and response of calves to a respiratory disease challenge.

A study was conducted to determine the effects of supplementing a diet marginally deficient in copper (Cu) with iron (Fe), molybdenum (Mo), or Cu on phagocytic cell function and disease resistance of calves. Thirty-one calves were born to heifers fed a corn silage-based diet containing 4.5 mg of Cu/kg. Treatments consisted of 1) control (CON; no supplemental Cu, Fe, or Mo), 2) 600 mg of Fe added/kg (FE), 3) 5 mg of Mo added/kg (MO), or 4) 10 mg of Cu added/kg of DM (CU). Activity of superoxide dismutase was lower (P < .06) in neutrophils from MO vs CON or CU calves at 170 d of age. bactericida

Rare connective tissue diseases in patients with C1-inhibitor deficiency hereditary angioedema: first evidence on prevalence and distribution from a large Italian cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) related to primary C1 inhibitor deficiency (C1INH), the defective clearance of immune complexes and apoptotic materials along with impairment of normal humoral response potentially leads to autoimmunity. Few studies report evidence on autoimmune diseases in C1INH-HAE, but no large population studies focus on rare connective tissue diseases (RCTDs). We aim at evaluating for the first time prevalence and distribution of RCTDs - Systemic Lupus Erytematosus (SLE), primary Sjogren Syndrome (SjS), primary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), Sys

A will and a way to fund medicines for rare diseases: the story of human growth hormone replacement for adults with growth hormone deficiency.

Growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy was recently recommended by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) for listing on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for adults with severe GH deficiency and impaired quality of life. This approval was significant for two reasons. First, the application was initiated and coordinated by a health professional working group, who prepared a 'public interest' submission to PBAC. Second, it resulted in a recommendation to subsidise therapy for a rare disease after two prior rejections on the basis of uncertainty about efficacy and cost effective

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and the risk of malaria and other diseases in children in Kenya: a case-control and a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of X-linked glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is thought to be a result of selection by malaria, but epidemiological studies have yielded confusing results. We investigated the relationships between G6PD deficiency and both malaria and non-malarial illnesses among children in Kenya. METHODS: We did this study in Kilifi County, Kenya, where the G6PD c.202T allele is the only significant cause of G6PD deficiency. We tested the associations between G6PD deficiency and severe and complicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria through a case-control s

The thymus in acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Comparison with other types of immunodeficiency diseases, and presence of components of human immunodeficiency virus type 1.

The authors studied thymus specimens taken at autopsy from eight acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients and compared these with those taken from four patients with congenital immunodeficiency (unrelated to an intrinsic thymus defect) and seven patients after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. In all cases, histology showed a severely involuted architecture, compatible with a debilitating disease before death. There were no major differences between thymus tissue in AIDS patients and in the other patients studied. This argues against the claim expressed in the literature that

Evaluation of the Diagnostic Accuracy of the Quantitative Point-of-Care SD Biosensor Standard G6PD Test for Assessment of G6PD Deficiency in Infectious Diseases.

BACKGROUND: G6PD deficiency affects about 500 million people worldwide and is prevalent in many malaria-endemic settings. People with G6PD deficiency are at risk of hemolysis when exposed to certain medications, including 8-aminoquinoline drugs used to treat Plasmodium vivax malaria. Increasing access to testing for G6PD deficiency at or near the point of care is critical to expanding the safe treatment of P. vivax malaria. We aimed to evaluate the performance of a semiquantitative test for G6PD deficiency, the SD Biosensor Standard G6PD Test with the Brewer's method, in a reference site for t

The Dark Side of Iron: The Relationship between Iron, Inflammation and Gut Microbiota in Selected Diseases Associated with Iron Deficiency Anaemia-A Narrative Review.

Iron is an indispensable nutrient for life. A lack of it leads to iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), which currently affects about 1.2 billion people worldwide. The primary means of IDA treatment is oral or parenteral iron supplementation. This can be burdened with numerous side effects such as oxidative stress, systemic and local-intestinal inflammation, dysbiosis, carcinogenic processes and gastrointestinal adverse events. Therefore, this review aimed to provide insight into the physiological mechanisms of iron management and investigate the state of knowledge of the relationship between iron su

Short-term magnesium deficiency downregulates telomerase, upregulates neutral sphingomyelinase and induces oxidative DNA damage in cardiovascular tissues: relevance to atherogenesis, cardiovascular diseases and aging.

1) short-term dietary deficiency of magnesium (Mg; 21 days) in rats (MgD) would result in a downregulation of telomerase in cardiac and aortic smooth muscle cells, 2) low levels of Mg(2+) added to drinking water (DW) would either prevent or greatly reduce the downregulation of telomerase in MgD, 3) MgD in rats would cause an upregulation of neutral-sphingomyelinase (N-SMAse) and p53, 4) short-term MgD would result in oxidation of DNA in diverse cardiac muscle and aortic smooth muscle cells as exemplified by measurement of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG), and 5) cross-talk between telomerase,

[Relation among syndrome of spleen deficiency and stagnation of liver-qi and electrogastrogram, gastric mucosal pathology and pulse-cardiovascular function in chronic gastric diseases].

In this research, Syndrome of Deficiency of Spleen (DS) and Stagnation of Liver-Qi (SLQ) as well as observations of electrogastrogram (EGG), gastric mucosal pathology and pulse cardiovascular examination were investigated in 56 cases of chronic gastric diseases (CGD). The results showed: (1) In SLQ with DS the amplitude of EGG was significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.01), it often indicated the active period of pathologic change, but in DS with SLQ, the amplitude of EGG was significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.01), it frequently denoted the static per

Genotype Prevalence of Lactose Deficiency, Vitamin D Deficiency, and the Vitamin D Receptor in a Chilean Inflammatory Bowel Disease Cohort: Insights from an Observational Study.

Lactose intolerance (LI) and vitamin D deficiency (VDD) have been linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We conducted an observational study in 192 Chilean IBD patients to investigate the prevalence of a specific gene variant (LCT-13910 CC genotype) associated with LI and the prevalence of VDD/Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) gene variants. Blood samples were analyzed using Illumina's Infinium Global Screening Array. The LCT-13910 CC genotype was found in 61% of IBD patients, similar to Chilean Hispanic controls and lower than Chilean Amerindian controls. The frequency of the LCT-13910-C allele i

Non-hematopoietic deficiency of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 deficiency leads to more severe anemia in a murine model of sickle cell disease.

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) deficiency leads to lower cholesterol and is associated with reduced vascular complications in the general population. Cholesterol lowering may also have beneficial effects in sickle cell disease (SCD). The objective of this study was to determine effects of PCSK9 deficiency in a mouse model of SCD. Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) was performed from donor SCD mice to wild-type, PCSK9-deficient, and LDLR-deficient recipients to generate SCD controls (Pcsk9+/+, SCDbmt) with preserved PCSK9 status, SCD mice with deficiency of PCSK9 (Pcsk9-/-

Biotin deficiency in a glycogen storage disease type 1b girl fed only with glycogen storage disease-related formula.

Glycogen storage disease type I is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by the defect in the glucose-6-phosphate enzyme system. Frequent intake of glucose-containing glycogen storage disease formula, uncooked cornstarch, or both, are usually needed to maintain normal blood glucose level. We report a glycogen storage disease type 1b girl with biotin deficiency caused by an exclusive glucose-containing glycogen storage disease formula for years, presenting with the appearance of severe skin lesions, and diagnosed by urinary organic acid analysis by gas chromato-spectrometry, and blood acylcarn

Micronutrient deficiencies in children with coeliac disease; a double-edged sword of both untreated disease and treatment with gluten-free diet.

INTRODUCTION: In coeliac disease (CD) micronutrient deficiencies may occur due to malabsorption in active disease and diminished intake during treatment with a gluten-free diet (GFD). This study assessed the micronutrient status in children with CD at diagnosis and follow-up. METHODS: Fifteen micronutrients were analysed in 106 blood samples from newly diagnosed CD and from patients on a GFD for <6 months, 6-12 months and with longstanding disease (>12 months). Predictors of micronutrient status included: demographics, disease duration, anthropometry, gastrointestinal symptoms, raised tissue

Challenges for Estimating the Global Prevalence of Micronutrient Deficiencies and Related Disease Burden: A Case Study of the Global Burden of Disease Study.

Information on the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies is needed to determine related disease burden; underpin evidence-based advocacy; and design, deliver, and monitor safe, effective interventions. Assessing the global prevalence of deficiency requires a valid micronutrient status biomarker with an appropriate cutoff to define deficiency and relevant data from representative surveys across multiple locations and years. The Global Burden of Disease Study includes prevalence estimates for iodine, iron, zinc, and vitamin A deficiencies, for which recommended biomarkers and appropriate defi
