Prophylactic use of a standardized botanical extract for the prevention of naturally occurring diarrhea in newborn Holstein calves.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prophylactic use of SB-300 (Jaguar Animal Health, San Francisco, CA), a standardized botanical extract isolated from the bark latex of Croton lechleri, on reducing fecal water losses and diarrhea events in Holstein bull calves individually housed under a restricted whole-milk feeding regimen (6 L/d) from 1 to 25 d of life. Fluid therapy administration due to dehydration, average weight gain, and the fecal microbiome were also evaluated. Bull calves used in this study were born from normal parturition, fed 4 L of pooled pasteurized colostrum by …

Serum osmolality measured in fingertip capillary blood is comparable to serum osmolality measured in venous blood.

Blood osmolality is considered the gold standard hydration assessment, but has limited application for technical and invasive reasons. Paired antecubital-venous blood and fingertip-capillary blood were collected pre- and 30 min post-drinking 600 mL water in 55 male/female participants. No bias (0.2 mOsmo/kg, limits of agreement = -2.5 to 2.8 mOsmo/kg) was found between sampling methods, with high linear correlation (Spearman's r = 0.95, P < 0.001). Capillary blood sampling offers an accurate less-invasive method for determining serum osmolality than venous blood sampling.

Fluid management in hospitalized pediatric patients.

The proper use of intravenous fluids has likely been responsible for saving more lives than any other group of substances. Proper use includes prescribing an appropriate electrolyte and carbohydrate solution, at a calculated rate or volume, for the right child, at the right time. Forming intravenous fluid plans for hospitalized children requires an understanding of water and electrolyte physiology in healthy children and how different pathology deviates from the norm. This review highlights fluid management in several disease types, including liver disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, syndrome of i

The nature of the progression of drought stress drives differential metabolomic responses in Populus deltoides.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The use of woody crops for Quad-level (approx. 1 × 1018 J) energy production will require marginal agricultural lands that experience recurrent periods of water stress. Populus species have the capacity to increase dehydration tolerance by lowering osmotic potential via osmotic adjustment. The aim of this study was to investigate how the inherent genetic potential of a Populus clone to respond to drought interacts with the nature of the drought to determine the degree of biochemical response. METHODS: A greenhouse drought stress study was conducted on Populus deltoides 'W…

Acute and chronic effects of hydration status on health.

Maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance is essential to healthy living as dehydration and fluid overload are associated with morbidity and mortality. This review presents the current evidence for the impact of hydration status on health. The Web of Science, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases were searched using relevant terms. Randomized controlled trials and large cohort studies published during the 20 years preceding February 2014 were selected. Older articles were included if the topic was not covered by more recent work. Studies show an association between hydration status …

Successful "detoxing" from commonly utilized modes of purging in bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa has many medical complications associated with the different modes of purging utilized by these patients. There also are inherent medical complications associated with chronic purging when these behaviors are abruptly discontinued. These complications experienced by a patient with bulimia nervosa when they decide to cease purging, can be a strong deterrent to successfully treating this disorder. Therefore it behooves care providers to become familiar with these complications in order to skillfully recommend strategies to help overcome the tendency to revert to purging behaviors

Effect of water and temperature stress on the content of active constituents of Hypericum brasiliense Choisy.

Hypericum brasiliense is a medicinal herb containing several compounds with important pharmacological activity. In this study, we investigated the effects of water stress (waterlogging and drought) and temperature (low and high, constant and alternate) on the content of betulinic acid and phenolic compounds (quercetin, rutin, 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone, isouliginosin B) in this species. In general, the water stress increased the levels of all of the compounds analyzed, particularly some of the phenolic compounds. On the other hand, the responses to alternating temperatures varied according to the c

Preparation of a benziodazole-type iodine(III) compound and its application as a nitrating reagent for synthesis of furazans via a copper-catalyzed cascade process.

The existing hypervalent I(III) reagents bearing ONO2 group are limited in types and their applications primarily focused on the nitrooxylation reactions featuring a fully-exo fashion. Herein, a benziodazole-type O2NO-I(III) compound was prepared and its reaction with β-monosubstituted enamines in the presence of CuI could trigger a radical nitration/cyclization/dehydration cascade to provide a series of less explored but biologically interesting furazan heterocycles. Mechanistically, the benziodazole-type O2NO-I(III) compound acts as a nitrating reagent and incorporates its NO moiety into the…

Crohn's disease and stroke in a young adult.

A 36-year-old man with a 21-year history of Crohn's disease suddenly developed left hemiparesis. He did not have atherosclerotic risk factors on admission, but he had marked dehydration which was likely due to prolonged home intravenous hyper-alimentation. Brain MRI revealed lacunar infarction in the right anterior corona radiata. An anticoagulation drug and a free-oxide scavenger successfully reversed his neurological deficits almost completely. Stroke in young adults less than 40 years old is extremely rare; therefore, we conclude that Crohn's disease can be a risk factor for acute ischemic …

Acute gastroenteritis due to double infection with enteropathogenic Escherichia coli or Salmonella and another bacterial pathogen.

Two enteric bacterial pathogens were concomitantly isolated from the feces of 18 infants less than 6 months of age admitted to the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center over a 7-year period. In all but two patients stool cultures grew enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, six of serogroup 0119. The other organisms cultured were Shigella, Salmonella, Campylobacter jejuni and Aeromonas hydrophila. The usual clinical presentation was diarrhea, dehydration and vomiting of acute onset, and low grade fever. Patients with gastroenteritis due to a single agent compared with multiple pathogens had a milder course …

Fluid therapy in mature cattle.

Fluid therapy is practical and beneficial when properly administered to cattle. Mature cattle are more frequently alkalotic than acidotic, so nonalkalizing solutions are usually indicated. Exceptions include cattle with choke, carbohydrate engorgement, diabetes mellitus, and, occasionally, renal disease, diarrhea, and fatty liver/ketosis. Most dehydrated cattle need supplemental potassium and calcium as well as sodium, chloride, and water. Intravenous administration is indicated in patients with obstructive gastrointestinal disease and those with severe dehydration. Oral or intraruminal admini…

Papillary plasma flow in rats. I. Relation to urine osmolality in normal and Brattleboro rats with hereditary diabetes insipidus.

Papillary plasma flow (PPF) was measured by the albumin accumulation technique in rats of the Brattleboro strain with or without diabetes in … orrelated with urine osmolality up to 1000 mosmol/kg H2O. Further increases in urine concentration (dehydration of Wistar rats) did not modify further PPF (255 +/- 28 versus 270 +/- 16 in non dehydrated Wistar). PPF might be influenced indirectly by ADH or prostaglandins and seems to depend on the osmotic environment of the papilla up to a certain limit. The …

[Acid-base and potassium balance disorders in neonatal calf diarrhea - Part 1: Pathophysiologic aspects and clinical signs].

ABSTRACT: Neonatal diarrhea remains one of the most frequent causes of morbidity, mortality, and economic loss in calves worldwide. The clinical consequences in affected animals are primarily attributable to fluid losses and consecutive dehydration, but also to the occurrence of metabolic acidosis and associated imbalances in potassium homeostasis. In calves with neonatal diarrhea, metabolic acidosis mainly results from the accumulation of strong anions, in particular D-lactate, which arises from bacterial fermentation processes of undigested nutrients within the gastrointestinal tract. Increa…

Proof of Concept: Is Small-scale Production of Diethyl Ether for Anesthetic Use Possible?

BACKGROUND: Clinicians face numerous challenges when providing effective anesthesia in the setting of humanitarian crisis or armed conflict. Anesthetic supply limitations often stand as a critical gap in these environments. Due to its clinical safety profile and relatively simple production, diethyl ether (Et2O) may offer a solution in such situations. METHODS: The dehydration of ethanol (EtOH) using an acid-catalyzed reaction was conducted twice. Sulfuric acid was added to a solution of ethanol in a glass flask that was heated to approximately 145 °C, promoting the formation of Et2O and wate…

COVID-19 symptoms are reduced by targeted hydration of the nose, larynx and trachea.

Dehydration of the upper airways increases risks of respiratory diseases from COVID-19 to asthma and COPD. We find in human volunteer studies involving 464 human subjects in Germany, the US, and India that respiratory droplet generation increases by up to 4 orders of magnitude in dehydration-associated states of advanced age (n = 357), elevated BMI-age (n = 148), strenuous exercise (n = 20) and SARS-CoV-2 infection (n = 87), and falls with hydration of the nose, larynx and trachea by calcium-rich hypertonic salts. We also find in a protocol of exercise-induced airway dehydration that hydration…

An autopsy case of a homeless person with unilateral lower extremity edema.

We present an autopsy case of a homeless person showing remarkable unilateral lower extremity edema, which was strongly associated with the cause of death. A 55-year-old homeless man without any past medical history was found dead in a flophouse. External examination showed evidence of malnourishment and remarkable swelling of the right, lower extremity. Putrefactive discoloration in the same area was evident at the time of autopsy (approximately 30h post-mortem). The autopsy revealed focal pneumonia in the right lower lobe, dehydration and chronic pancreatitis. Dissection of the edematous ext…
