Many hematophagous arthropods are stimulated by blood constituents to initiate feeding. We used a membrane-based feeding system to identify chemicals that stimulate acceptance and engorgement responses in various life stages of bed bugs. Water was fortified with a variety of compounds (e.g. salts, amino acids, vitamins, nucleotides, cholesterol and fatty acids) in these bioassays. Platelet aggregation activity was investigated in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension in different stages of the disease. Platelets were activated with ADP and PAF. Spontaneous platelet aggregation was also measured. Spontaneous and low dose PAF-induced platelet aggregation in patients was greater than in healthy subjects and increased with the severity of the disease. It was concluded that the increased platelet activity can be related to unfavourable prognosis in these patients.

Abscess imaging with leukocyte scintigraphy is described in a case report. Autologous leukocytes were separated from whole blood in a patient with localized inflammation in the perineal region and labeled with 99mTc, an ideal radionuclide for clinical examination with gamma camera. Scintigraphic investigations demonstrated a deep-lying anal abscess. The procedure may prove useful for detection of occult infections and may provide a new diagnostic approach in fever of unknown origin.

For diagnosis of metastatic bone pathology x-ray and radionuclide studies were combined into one: electroroentgenoscanography. A total of 48 patients with different sites of a primary tumor process were examined using 99mTc-pyrophosphate.
