The drinking test: a current noninvasive technique to evaluate gastric accommodation and perception.

Impaired gastric accommodation has been proposed as an im- portant mechanism in the generation of functional dyspepsia. There is an interest in methods that allow recording and quantifica- tion of the gastric accommodation reflex. Drinking tests, with water or nutrients, have been developed as a noninvasive, inexpensive method to assess gastric perception and accommodation. These tests are easily performed, do not need any special equipment and are well tolerated by patients. Drink test results are reported as the maximum tolerated volume, individual and cumulative symptom scores. Patients wit…

From dehydration to hyperhidration isotonic and diuretic drinks and hyperhydratant aids in sport.

Diabetes mellitus affects about 8% of the adult population. The estimated number of patients with diabetes, presently about 170 million people, is expected to increase by 50-70% within the next 25 years. Diabetes is an important component of the complex of 'common' cardiovascular risk factors, and is responsible for acceleration and worsening of atherothrombosis. Major cardiovascular events cause about 80% of the total mortality in diabetic patients. Diabetes also induces peculiar microangiopathic changes leading to diabetic nephropathy conducive to end-stage renal failure, and to diabetic ret

[Assessment of the quality of drinking water in the industrial city and risk for public health].

Karabash city sprang up around the copper plant that uses local copper ore, which was composed of zinc, sulfur, barium, beryllium, arsenic, manganese, lead, antimony, chromium, cadmium, gallium, indium, scandium, thallium, germanium, osmium, and others. Centralized water supply for the city is organized from the lake Serebry and the flowage on the river B. Kialim. Part of the population uses water wells, voids and springs. In Serebry Lake and drinking groundwater there were found significant concentrations of nitrates, manganese, arsenic, cadmium, iron, lead barium, nickel, mercury and zinc. T…

Modeling longitudinal drinking data in clinical trials: an application to the COMBINE study.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of consensus in the literature as to how to define drinking outcomes in clinical trials. Typically, separate statistical models are fit to assess treatment effects on several summary drinking measures. These summary measures do not capture the complexity of drinking behavior. We used the COMBINE study to illustrate a statistical approach for examining treatment effects on high-resolution drinking data. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of COMBINE participants randomly assigned to naltrexone, acamprosate, with medical management and/or combined behavioral i…

Hypertension associated with alcohol consumption based on the facial flushing reaction to drinking.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is a risk factor for hypertension. Facial flushing after drinking is a typical symptom of high alcohol sensitivity. This study assessed the role of the facial flushing response in the relationship between alcohol consumption and hypertension. METHODS: The subjects were 1,763 men (288 nondrinkers, 527 flushing drinkers, 948 nonflushing drinkers) who had received a health checkup. Data were collected from the subjects' medical records. The risk of hypertension related to weekly drinking amount in nonflushers and flushers was analyzed and compared with that in nondrinkers. R…

Is mild-moderate drinking in pregnancy harmless? New experimental evidence to the opposite.

During the last decade a growing number of studies have failed to detect adverse neurodevelopmental effects of mild--to moderate maternal drinking in the exposed child, supporting a climate that "some drinking in pregnancy is OK". A recent experimental study in sheep, mimicking conditions of moderate drinking in the third trimester of pregnancy, provides powerful evidence that there are serious lifelong risks to fetal exposure to alcohol. These should serve as an alarm call to those who legitimize mild-moderate maternal drinking based on incomplete data.

Drinking, substance use and the operation of motor vehicles by young adolescents in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Impaired driving is a recognized cause of major injury. Contemporary data are lacking on exposures to impaired driving behaviours and related injury among young adolescents, as well as inequities in these youth risk behaviours. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Cycle 6 (2009/10) of the Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children survey involved 26,078 students enrolled in 436 Canadian schools. We profiled cross-sectionally the reported use of alcohol, marijuana, or other illicit drugs by on-road and off-road vehicle operators when young adolescents (mean age 13.3 (± 1.6) years) were either drivi

The role of ANKK1 and TTC12 genes on drinking behaviour in tobacco dependent subjects.

OBJECTIVES: Alcohol use disorders (AUD) act as a risk factor for smoking relapse, and tobacco dependent (TD) subjects with comorbid AUD experience more withdrawal symptoms compared to TD subjects without AUD or other psychiatric comorbidities. Our aim was to investigate whether drinking behaviour in the past 12 months and smoking relapse due to alcohol use in TD subjects was associated with polymorphisms flanking the TTC12/ANKK1/DRD2 region since associations have been found between these genes and AUD and TD as separate disorders. METHODS: 380 TD subjects were assessed for alcohol use and re…

Why (not) alcohol energy drinks? A qualitative study with Australian university students.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Alcohol energy drinks (AEDs) are a recent entry to the ready-to-drink market, but there is an absence of research int … o their capacity to wake the drinker up at the beginning of the evening and facilitate partying and drinking over a longer period. Many of the participants reported experiencing or observing negative effects from drinking AEDs, some quite severe, but this did not appear to act as a deterrent to their consumption. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Given the popu …

Cola soft drinks for evaluating the bioaccessibility of uranium in contaminated mine soils.

There is a rising need for scientifically sound and quantitative as well as simple, rapid, cheap and readily available soil testing procedures. The purpose of this study was to explore selected soft drinks (Coca-Cola Classic®, Diet Coke®, Coke Zero®) as indicators of bioaccessible uranium and other trace elements (As, Ce, Cu, La, Mn, Ni, Pb, Th, Y, Zn) in contaminated soils of the Mary Kathleen uranium mine site, Australia. Data of single extraction tests using Coca-Cola Classic®, Diet Coke® and Coke Zero® demonstrate that extractable arsenic, copper, lanthanum, manganese, nickel, yttrium and

Drinks like a fish: using zebrafish to understand alcoholic liver disease.

Steatosis is the most common consequence of acute alcohol abuse, such as occurs during a drinking binge. Acute alcohol induced steatosis may predispose to more severe hepatic disease. We have developed a model of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in zebrafish larvae to provide a system in which the genes and pathways that contribute to steatosis can be rapidly identified. Zebrafish larvae represent an attractive vertebrate model for studying acute ALD because they possess the pathways to metabolize alcohol, the liver is mature by 4 days post-fertilization (dpf), and alcohol can be simply added to …

Tea drinking as a risk factor for neural tube defects in northern China.

BACKGROUND: Tea catechins inhibit the activity of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which catalyzes the inactive form of folate 7,8-dihydrofolate to the active form of folate 5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolate. This inhibition leads to disturbance of the folate metabolic pathway and to lower bioavailability of folate to cells; therefore, it may increase the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) in a developing embryo. We examined the association between tea drinking during the periconceptional period and the risk of NTDs. METHODS: Cases were fetuses or neonates with an NTD as ascertained through a popul…

Strategy to control catheter encrustation with citrated drinks: a randomized crossover study.

PURPOSE: Nucleation pH is the pH at which Ca and Mg come out of urine to form crystals. If the safety margin between voiding pH and nucleation pH could be increased, it would increase the possibility of an alternative to controlling the activity of urease producing bacteria as a strategy to control catheter encrustation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a 6-week randomized crossover study in 24 patients with catheter blockage who were randomly allocated to a specific sequence of 3 consecutive available treatments, including increased fluid intake, lemon juice and potassium citrate. Each pa

Alcohol drinking and risk of Parkinson's disease: a case-control study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Although some epidemiologic studies found inverse associations between alcohol drinking and Parkinson's disease (PD), the majority of studies found no such significant associations. Additionally, there is only limited research into the possible interactions of alcohol intake with aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) 2 activity with respect to PD risk. We examined the relationship between alcohol intake and PD among Japanese subjects using data from a case-control study. METHODS: From 214 cases within 6 years of PD onset and 327 controls without neurodegenerative disease, we collected inf…

[Standardization of a method for concentration and detection of enteric viruses from drinking water].

INTRODUCTION: Enteric viruses have been implicated in acute diarrheal disease, food-borne disease, hepatitis A and meningitis outbreaks, in which water was the vehicle of transmission. OBJECTIVE: A concentration method was standardized for the detection of enteric viruses in drinking water. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty liters of water were concentrated to 6 ml by filtration and tangential ultrafiltration. Viral solutions of 20 L each were prepared at 1, 10, 50 and 100 TCID50 of Sabin poliovirus type 1 as positive controls. Viral particles were recovered by tissue culture and detected by con…

[170 years of struggle of the Viennese physicians for hygienically safe drinking water].

Discussions in the Society of Physicians in Vienna about the connection between water contamination and typhoid outbreaks began in 1838. The basis of the water supply at that time was house wells partly drawing contaminated ground water and for a limited area the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Pipeline was useful. After many investigations on quantities and qualities of possible water sources and controversial discussions between Viennese politicians and the Society of Physicians, the latter strictly turned down the usage of surface water. In October 1865 the Society demanded that the source Kaiserbrunn in

[Distribution of drinking water in French Guyana: issues and solutions for improving access].

French Guyana is located in South America, and it is confronted with an endemic situation where waterborne diseases are widespread, especially among those 30,000 people without access to drinking water. In 2007, two notices of the French High Council for Public Health were issued, one concerning vaccination against typhoid and the other on conditions for improving water supply in Guyana. The latter served as a basis for proposing and implementing actions to "improve water quality for those who did not have access to it". Some foundation for further action was provided due to actions developed …

Naltrexone and combined behavioral intervention effects on trajectories of drinking in the COMBINE study.

OBJECTIVE: COMBINE is the largest study of pharmacotherapy for alcoholism in the United States to date, designed to answer questions about the benefits of combining behavioral and pharmacological interventions. Trajectory-based analyses of daily drinking data allowed identification of distinct drinking trajectories in smaller studies and demonstrated significant naltrexone effects even when primary analyses on summary drinking measures were unsuccessful. The objective of this study was to replicate and refine trajectory estimation and to assess effects of naltrexone, acamprosate and therapy on…
