Recurrent dislocation of the elbow is uncommon compared to other recurrent dislocations. The most frequent etiology consists in lesions of the radial collateral ligament that cause instability of the elbow joint. Surgical repair using the Osborne and Cotterill technique seems to give the best results, both short and long term.

The authors have reviewed 32 cases of severe varus deformity following supra-condylar fractures in childhood. The sequellae were mainly cosmetic, the function being preserved. All cases were treated by supra-condylar osteotomy fixed by screwing. The technique is described. The results were satisfactory in 20 cases.

Cricket, a globally renowned sport, requires a unique interplay of repetitive and high-intensity movements, rendering players susceptible to a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal injuries. This review delves into the biomechanical principles underpinning common cricket-related injuries and the pivotal role of magnetic resonance imaging in their diagnosis and management. With a primary focus on the shoulder, elbow, wrist, torso, and lumbar spine, the discussion encompasses injury mechanisms, adaptive biomechanical changes, and associated pathologies, such as internal impingement, labral tears, no

Radial head fractures are the most common fractures around the elbow. Because they are often accompanied by ligamentous injuries, we recommend considering them to be osteoligamentous injuries rather than simple fractures, even in undisplaced or minimally displaced fractures. Surgeons should always suspect and actively exclude concomitant ligament tears. The incidence of these associated injuries increases with greater severity of the radial head fracture. However, the standard Mason classification system does not adequately address this problem, and all attempts to establish a new classificati

AIMS: The conventionally described mechanism of distal biceps tendon rupture (DBTR) is of a 'considerable extension force suddenly applied to a resisting, actively flexed forearm'. This has been commonly paraphrased as an 'eccentric contracture to a flexed elbow'. Both definitions have been frequently used in the literature with little objective analysis or citation. The aim of the present study was to use video footage of real time distal biceps ruptures to revisit and objectively define the mechanism of injury.
METHODS: An online search identified 61 videos reporting a DBTR. Videos were ind

AIMS: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication after elbow trauma and can cause severe upper limb disability. Although multiple prognostic factors have been reported to be associated with the development of post-traumatic HO, no model has yet been able to combine these predictors more succinctly to convey prognostic information and medical measures to patients. Therefore, this study aimed to identify prognostic factors leading to the formation of HO after surgery for elbow trauma, and to establish and validate a nomogram to predict the probability of HO formation in such particul

Adult traumatic brachial plexus injury involves injury of the C5-T1 spinal nerves. Common patterns of injury include "upper arm" and "total arm" types. The specific signs of preganglionic avulsion injury infer a poor prognosis for spontaneous recovery and surgery may be needed. Detailed preoperative evaluation is recommended for localization of the lesions. The treatment of upper arm type injury comprises restoration of elbow flexion and shoulder control. Good functional results may be achieved after multiple nerve transfers. The treatment of total arm type includes hand function reconstructio

Treatment with an Ilizarov ring external fixator is less invasive of soft tissues than is open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery. Operative treatment of fractures with an Ilizarov ring external fixator after elbow ankylosis has not been reported. We describe our experience with this surgical treatment (i.e., placement of an Ilizarov external ring fixator) for a fracture that occurred after elbow ankylosis. A 63-year-old Japanese woman fell from standing height onto her left elbow. A transverse fracture was observed at the ankylosed site and the patient underwent surgery 8 days aft

Unfortunately, the literature has little guidance for revision elbow surgery. This article attempts to supplement what is known in the literature with the author's anecdotal experience. With this article, it is the author's hope that the reader may learn from his or her successes and his or her failures without having to discover them first hand. There is good reason for angst to overcome surgeons looking at radiographs depicting a traumatized proximal ulna or radius. Surgeons know that there is a good chance they will be seeing these patients for a long time.

In throwing activities, the elbow is sometimes stressed to its biomechanical limits. In this article, forces, torques, angular velocities, and muscle activity about the elbow are reviewed for the baseball pitch, the football pass, the javelin throw, the windmill softball pitch, the tennis serve, and the golf swing. The elbow goes through rapid extension in baseball pitching (about 2400 degrees/s) and rapid flexion in the javelin throw (about 1900 degrees/s). During baseball pitching, the elbow joint is subject to a valgus torque reaching 64 Nm, and requires proximal forces as high as 1000 N to

Elbow dislocation in children is uncommon condition in children, it's occurred in 3 to 6% of all elbow injuries. Only case reports and small series reported in the literature. The aim of our study is to evaluate the outcomes of open reduction of neglected elbow dislocation (NED) in children. A retrospective review of 26 neglected elbow dislocation was treated by open reduction at our institution between January 2010 and December 2018 was performed. Age, mechanism of injury, associated fracture, manipulation by bone- setters, infectious complications, were recorded. The SOFCOT criteria was used…

BACKGROUND: The incidence of upper extremity injury in baseball pitchers has increased over the past decade. This has resulted in a large body of research mainly focused on the kinematic and kinetic patterns of the elbow and shoulder to elucidate the cause of these injuries, with little attention on studying the associations of forearm rotation and upper arm joint moments.
HYPOTHESIS: There will be significant differences in forearm kinematics and kinetics when comparing the fastball pitch with the curveball pitch. There will be a positive association between forearm kinetics, specifically su

Transposition of the proximal radioulnar joint, so-called convergent elbow dislocation, is an extremely rare injury whereby the proximal radius crosses over the proximal ulnar and converges medially. This injury can occur in isolation or even less frequently in association with a posterior humeroulnar dislocation. Open reduction is almost always necessary. The diagnosis is frequently delayed as the injury is easily overlooked. In the literature, 13 cases in children and 2 in adults have so far been described. This is the first report of a combined elbow dislocation (posterior and convergent) w

The principles and management of simple elbow dislocations have evolved over time. In the past, a conservative approach of immobilization and slow rehabilitation were used. More modern treatments emphasize an understanding of the soft tissues about the elbow joint and prescribe an aggressive approach to regaining motion. Elbow stiffness is a common effect of the injury. We outline our treatment principles in a series of high school wrestlers with simple elbow dislocation. The ultimate goal is to return to sport in a safe but early timeframe. We recommend a brief period of immobilization with c

BACKGROUND: It is controversial whether the collateral ligaments should be repaired primarily for capitellum fractures with ligamentous injury. This research was conducted to summarize the current evidence for this issue.
METHODS: Databases, including Medline, Cochrane library and EMBASE, were searched from their establishment to December 31, 2024 for clinical articles on capitellum fractures. The reference lists of the relevant studies were also checked successively. The general information including first author, publication time, location, the number of cases, treatment for the capitellum
