Supramolecular rosette intermediated homochiral double helix.

Precise organization of organic molecules into homochiral double-helix remains a challenge due to the difficulty in controlling both self-as … effective excitation energy delocalization within the double-helix, which contributes to near-unity energy transfer from double-helix to adsorbed acceptor dyes even in donor/acceptor ratios over 1000, leading to bright circularly polarized luminescence from the originally achiral acceptor. The experimental and theoretical simulation results not only provide a hie …

Mitochondrial quality control and transfer communication in neurological disorders and neuroinflammation.

Mitochondria, as the primary energy factories of cells, play a pivotal role in maintaining nervous system function and regulating inflammatory responses. The balance of mitochondrial quality control is critical for neuronal health, and disruptions in this balance are often implicated in the pathogenesis of various neurological disorders. Mitochondrial dysfunction not only exacerbates energy deficits but also triggers neuroinflammation through the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), such as mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This review examines th

Molecular-captured hot-electron detection in single-atom alloy antennas.

Hot electrons are ubiquitous in diverse physical and chemical processes, since they are involved in the energy transfer of elementary processes such as adsorption, diffusion and desorption of reactants. However, hot electrons have short lifetimes (∼few fs) and small mean free paths (∼<10 nm), which are inherently difficult to detect via conventional in situ pumping techniques. Here, we designed a spectrally tunable photoexcitation desorption analyser, a tool for tracking hot-electron generation, which enables mechanistic studies of hot-electron generation and transfer in single-atom alloy ante…

Integrated CO2 Capture and Conversion to Formate with a Molecular Platinum Bis(diphosphine) Electrocatalyst.

Carbon dioxide is a potentially valuable feedstock for carbon-based fuels or commodities but is only available in dilute streams. Many studies have focused on either the capture and concentration of CO2 or the reduction of pure CO2 streams. The direct reduction of sorbent-captured CO2 in an integrated process would skip the energy-intensive CO2 concentration and sorbent regeneration step. Herein, we report the electrocatalytic reduction of 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazolium-2-carboxylate (IPr·CO2), which forms quantitatively from the reaction of sorbent 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)

Ectopic expression of the mitochondrial protein COXFA4L3 in human sperm acrosome and its potential application in the selection of male infertility treatments.

PURPOSE: Spermatogenesis requires a large amount of energy, which is primarily produced by the mitochondrial electron transfer chain. Mitochondrial dysfunction affects male infertility, suggesting a relationship between the electron transfer chain and male infertility. COXFA4L3 (C15ORF48) is an emerging subunit protein of cytochrome oxidase specifically expressed in germ cells during spermatogenesis, and it may be involved in male infertility. Therefore, to investigate whether COXFA4L3 could be a marker of mitochondrial dysfunction in the sperm, this study examined the protein expression and l

Comparing the effects of Cu-Ti/RuO2-IrO2 electrode configuration on the electro-reduction of nitrate.

Nitrate pollution is a global problem as it affects both the environment and human health. The objective of this research was to study the effect of electrode configuration on the electro-reduction of nitrate. Coaxial cylindrical (inner rod and outer tube copper cathodes) and vertical plate parallel copper cathodes paired with Ti/RuO2-IrO2 (rod, tube, and plate) configurations were studied under various current densities and initial nitrate concentrations. The efficiency of each configuration was determined based on the removal efficiency of nitrate, specific energy consumption, mass transfer

Cadmium sulfide nanoparticles-assisted intimate coupling of microbial and photoelectrochemical processes: Mechanisms and environmental applications.

Intimate coupling of microbial extracellular electron transfer (EET) and photoelectrochemical processes is an emerging research area with great potential to circumvent many disadvantages associated with traditional techniques that depend on independent microbial or photocatalysis treatment. Microbial EET processes involve microorganism oxidation of extracellular electron donors for respiration and synchronous reduction of extracellular electron acceptors to form an integrated respiratory chain. Coupled microbial EET-photoelectrochemical technologies greatly improve energy conversion efficiency

Spectroscopic investigation of water-soluble alloyed QDs with bovine serum albumin.

We present here a systematic investigation on the interaction between a water-soluble alloyed semiconductor quantum dot and bovine serum albumin using various spectroscopic techniques i.e. fluorescence quenching, resonance light scattering and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy. The analysis of fluorescence spectrum and fluorescence intensity indicates that the intrinsic fluorescence of bovine serum albumin (BSA) gets quenched by both static and dynamic quenching mechanism. The Stern-Volmer quenching constants, energy transfer efficiency parameters, binding parameters and corresponding ther…

Dielectric Heating of Ionic Liquids: A Successful Strategy to Enhance Regeneration Kinetics in Direct Air Capture.

Climate change mitigation strategies have driven research on energy-efficient sorbents for direct air capture (DAC). Ionic liquids (ILs) offer a flexible design and the possibility of integration with dielectric heating, presenting an opportunity to enhance cyclic CO2 recovery and significantly reduce the cost and energy consumption in DAC processes. Building upon an experimentally validated strategy to synthesize a range of quaternary ammonium salts with amino acid anions and a quat molecule counterion, a sustainable IL, [N4444][Tau+Lys], was designed to be coupled with microwave irradiation.

Interfacial energy conversion mechanism between 3003 aluminum alloy and 321 stainless steel in vaporizing foil actuator welding process.

Conventional welding methods encounter significant challenges, including poor weldability, low joint strength, and the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds, primarily due to the substantial disparities in the physical and chemical properties of aluminum and iron. To mitigate these issues, the vaporizing foil actuator welding (VFAW) process has emerged as a highly promising solid-phase welding technology, particularly suitable for joining dissimilar metals with pronounced differences in properties, such as aluminum alloys and stainless steels. The present study provides an innovative qu

Efficient Reverse Intersystem Crossing in Carbene-Copper-Amide TADF Emitters via an Intermediate Triplet State.

The mechanism behind reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) in metal-based TADF emitters is still under debate. Thermal rISC necessitates small singlet/triplet energy gaps as realized in donor-acceptor systems with charge-transfer excited states. However, their associated spin-orbit couplings are too small to account for effective rISC. Here, we report the first nonadiabatic dynamics simulation of the rISC process in a carbene-copper(I)-carbazolyl TADF emitter. Efficient rISC on a picosecond time scale is demonstrated for an initial triplet minimum geometry that exhibits a perpendicular orientati

Dual-descriptor molecular design of cross-linkable hole transport materials for efficient and stable quantum dot light-emitting diodes.

Cross-linkable small-molecule (SM) hole-transport materials (HTMs) are attractive for solution-processed quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) because they provide solvent-resistant multilayer architectures while retaining structural precision and high synthetic reproducibility. However, cross-linking often introduces a fundamental trade-off: although network formation improves solvent resistance, it can simultaneously disrupt molecular packing, increase energetic disorder, and impair charge transport. Molecular design principles to overcome this trade-off remain largely unexplored. Herein

A bipodal dicyano anchor unit for single-molecule spintronic devices.

The conductance through single 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) connected to gold electrodes is studied with the nonequilibrium Green's function method combined with density functional theory. The aim of the study is to derive the effect of a dicyano anchor group, =C(CN)2, on energy level alignment between the electrode Fermi level and a molecular energy level. The strong electron-withdrawing nature of the dicyano anchor group lowers the LUMO level of TCNQ, resulting in an extremely small energy barrier for electron injection. At zero bias, electron transfer from electrodes easily occur

Excess electron trapping in duplex DNA: long range transfer via stacked adenines.

An understanding of charge transfer (CT) in DNA lies at the root of assessing the risks and benefits of exposure to ionizing radiation. Energy deposition by high-energy photons and fast-charged particles creates holes and excess electrons (EEs) in DNA, and the subsequent reactions determine the complexity of DNA damage and ultimately the risk of disease. Further interest in CT comes from the possibility that hole transfer, excess electron transfer (EET), or both in DNA might be used to develop nanoscale circuits. To study EET in DNA, EPR spectroscopy was used to determine the distribution of E

Mitochondrial ETF insufficiency drives neoplastic growth by selectively optimizing cancer bioenergetics.

Mitochondrial electron transport flavoprotein (ETF) insufficiency causes metabolic diseases known as a multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD). In contrast to muscle, ETFDH is a non-essential gene in acute lymphoblastic leukemia NALM6 cells, and its expression is reduced across human cancers. In various human cancer cell lines and mouse models, ETF insufficiency caused by decreased ETFDH expression limits flexibility of OXPHOS fuel utilisation but paradoxically increases bioenergetics and accelerates neoplastic growth via activation of the mTORC1/BCL-6/4E-BP1 axis. Collectively, thes
