We present the case of a 23-year-old woman who was referred with an 18-month history, of oral ulcers finally diagnosed as erythema multiforme (EM). During this time she received multiple diagnoses and treatments, without resolution of the symptoms. The patient had a history of frequent infections by herpes simplex virus (HSV) in mouth, and apparently the drugs used to control it extended the signs and symptoms of EM. The patient showed rapid improvement after discontinuation of the drugs, and treatment for episodes of HSV infection was prescribed.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of thalidomide in the treatment of chronic erythema multiforme unresponsive to usual treatments.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients with chronic erythema multiforme were given thalidomide 100 mg/day after other treatments had failed, particularly acyclovir and prednisone.

An 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency department 5 days after playing in the forest. His initial eruption, consistent with allergic contact dermatitis to poison ivy, progressed into target lesions involving his extremities, palms, upper trunk, and face, consistent with an erythema multiforme-like eruption. This report details the case and reviews the literature concerning this atypical and potentially underreported complication of plant-induced allergic contact dermatitis.
